  “I told you he was all set to back out,” Johnny Kelsey told his wife, Anna. “I knew that when Jake went flying up those steps after him this morning.”

  “Nonsense,” said Tillie Phelps. “Sandy was the last to show, didn’t you notice? Mag told her to run and I’d say she was all set to do just that.”

  “Ha!” said Annabelle Scanlon. “Run after him, that’s what, if you want my opinion.”

  The only two who weren’t discussing what must have happened behind the scenes at the wedding were Mag and Clarence, who walked out of the church arm in arm, as they had entered it. They had a more pressing argument to settle.

  “Remember, I told you when I left town that this silly feud would be settled someday,” Clarence said. “The curse is broken, precisely as I predicted.”

  “Why, you did no such thing!” Mag exclaimed. “You said you’d see my whole family in...well, you know... before we ever spoke again.”

  “Magdalena, you have it all wrong, as usual.”

  “I remember it very distinctly, Clarence. You were wearing that gray sharkskin suit that was so becoming and...”

  They debated all the way out to Timberlake Lodge. They never did agree. But they had a delightful time arguing.
