“I can’t. Not yet.” I reflexively placed my hand over my belly, still sticky with Mole cum.

Kayla caught my gesture and her eyes once again grew wide, this time with understanding.

“Here, clean yourself up,” said Judy, pulling a package of tissues out of her purse.

I took it from her and began to wipe the Mole spunk from my face. Kayla bent down and picked up the discarded lab coat and held it out for me.

“Come on,” said Dr. Hobart, after I’d slipped the coat on over my shoulders. “Let’s find more comfortable surroundings.”

Dr. Hobart led us toward the far end of the gymnasium, opposite the side that I’d entered. He pushed through the double doors and we emerged into a brightly lit hall. My friends and I stood blinking as the Moles filed in after us through the doors. There were lockers on both sides of the walls and cobwebbed banners hanging from the ceiling. It looked like a high school.

Dr. Hobart led us down the hall and through a second set of double doors into a large, two-story library. Wooden bookcases lined all of the walls and filled the back half of the room. The front half of the library was filled with wooden tables and chairs and a long reception desk. There were books everywhere. It was like all of the shelves had exploded simultaneously. Judy’s baby ran squealing into the pile of books, picking one up and tossing it gleefully across the room with a crash. The other Moles ambled in behind us and crouched or sat in various places around the room, picking up books at random and flipping through them, looking for pictures.

“Check this out!” said Will, rushing over to a long wooden cabinet filled with tiny square drawers. He ripped open one of the drawers with a squeak. “A card catalog!” He flipped through the paper cards. “Oh man! This is amazing! It’s like prehistoric Google!”

Andrew sighed. “Taking it to a whole new level, Will.” He turned to the doctor. “Are there other vaults like this one?”

“Yes, many,” said Dr. Hobart. “This is Vault Four, one of the first. But the government built them all over the country. They’re entirely self-sufficient. Well, almost. I’ve been living down here for almost forty years.”

Kayla suddenly turned to look at me, grabbing my hands.

“Oh, you’ll come back eventually, won’t you?!” she said, looking forlorn.

“Of course I will,” I said, laughing to reassure her. “I can’t stay away from my family and friends forever. But I need to lay low for a while. Until everything blows over.”

Andrew looked at me, at Judy’s child, who was stacking books under a table, and then back at me. He’d put two and two together as well.

“We won’t say anything,” said Andrew. “Will we, Will?”

Will pulled his head out of the card catalog to look at his friend. “You’re just going to let her stay down here?” As amazed as he was by the library, he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“Yes, of course,” said Kayla. “It’s her decision and we’re her friends and we should respect it. Besides, she won’t be alone. You’re staying down here, too, aren’t you?” she said, turning to Dr. Hobart and Judy.

“This is my home now,” said Judy, pulling out a chair to sit down.

“She’ll be well taken care of,” said the doctor enthusiastically. “Don’t you worry about that. She’ll have everything she needs. Plenty of food and ... er ... clothing ... eventually. And she’ll be perfectly safe. The Moles are absolutely no danger as long as you don’t threaten them.”

A book flew over our heads and thumped onto the floor, rolling. Judy’s baby scampered back under a table, giggling gleefully.

“No danger, eh?” said Will, looking skeptically up at Marco, who was looming over him. The Mole was hunched over, examining Will’s beard with curiosity.

“Perfectly harmless,” Judy concurred. “I’ve been down here for years and they’ve never laid—” she hesitated. “They’ve never once tried to hurt me.”

“But what about your parents?” said Kayla. “You can’t just disappear on them. They’ll lose their minds.”

“We were just about to take care of that,” said the doctor, patting the pocket of his lab coat which was bulging with papers. “In fact, we were just on our way to do that when we happened to catch sight of you three. We’re going to tell Robyn’s parents she came down with a highly contagious—”

“That I’ve been quarantined,” I interrupted, cutting to the chase. “For my own safety and the safety of others.”

“Sounds like you’ve got it all figured out,” said Andrew, nodding approvingly.

“I can’t believe you guys came back for me,” I said, relieved that the crisis had finally been averted.

“Of course we did,” said Will, offended. “We couldn’t just leave you down here.”

“You’re the reason I’m down here,” I said, jabbing him in the shoulder with my finger.

  “Well, ah—” he started sheepishly.

“We came back with firemen, and police,” said Kayla. “There was even a paramedic. But you were gone by the time we got back. We thought the worst had happened. The detective in charge called quits on the search and rescue after twenty-four hours and declared you a missing person. Can you believe it?! He must have gotten a call from someone higher up. He refused to even see us after he called it off. It took us almost two days to find this place. It’s amazing! I almost want to stay down here myself.” She glanced at the Moles. “To ... explore it.”

Andrew arched his eyebrow suspiciously at his girlfriend.

  I turned to the doctor.

“Well, maybe we can work something out,” Dr. Hobart said, clearing his throat. “For a few days or a week or two. But only on the condition of absolute secrecy.” He admonished my friends with his finger.

“Hell, yeah!” said Will. “This is going to be awesome!” He turned to Andrew, his hand raised for a high-five. Andrew raised his hand reluctantly and let his friend slap it.

“No pictures!” I said, jabbing Will in the chest with my finger. “And no video recordings. I don’t want you blabbing about this all over the Internet. Otherwise it will be crawling with soldiers. Or worse: tourists. You’ll ruin everything.”

“Okay, okay!” he said, brushing me off. “I promise, I promise!”

“Kayla. Eyes. Up here,” Andrew snapped, interrupting.

I turned to see what the commotion was. One of the Moles had crept up beside Kayla and was sniffing her hair, fascinated by its color. She’d naturally been somewhat preoccupied by the Mole’s massive erection, which was grazing against her hip.

“Back off, buster,” I said, pushing the Mole away.

The Mole grumbled and sauntered off.

Kayla’s eyes darted up at me guiltily and then turned away.

“So about what we saw back there,” said Will. “Did we really see what we saw? Because we could hear you from the other side of the vault. That’s how we found you: we just followed the sound of your moans. We thought someone was killing you, Robyn! Did you really let yourself get tag-teamed by a bunch of—”

“She did what she had to,” said Kayla, shutting him down with a stern voice. “She doesn’t need to explain herself to you.”

“I didn’t mean—” Will said, backpedaling.

“It’s okay,” I said, smiling gently. I reached over and took Marco by the arm and pulled him into the circle. “Guys ... this is Marco,” I said.

Will stared up at the Mole, his mouth agape.

“You gave him a name?” he said, incredulous.

“That’s not the only thing I gave him,” I said.

Kayla choked on her own snort.

“Look. You’re going to find out soon enough,” I said. “Things got crazy down here. I was frightened and alone. Things happened. I’m not proud of it—” Kayla looked at me dubiously at this point “—but I can’t change it now. I have to stay down here at least until I’ve had the baby.”

Will’s jaw dropped. “You’re pregnant?!” he said, gobsmacke
d.

  Kayla laughed.

“Jesus. Took you long enough,” said Andrew, rolling his eyes.

“Probably,” I said, turning to Will. “I’ve been pumped so full of—”

“We get it. We don’t need the messy details,” said Kayla, raising her hand to silence me. “We already got a pretty good look at them.”

“Anyway,” I continued, blushing. “I think I’m going to enjoy spending a little time down here—”

“I bet you will,” Kayla muttered under her breath.

“—so there’s no need to worry about me.” I shot her a warning glance.

  Kayla smiled innocently.

“Well,” said Andrew. “This has certainly turned out to be the most interesting urban exploration expedition I’ve ever been on.”

“Me too,” I said, looking up at Marco adoringly. “It’s had its ups and downs, but I’m glad I came.”

“I bet you are,” said Kayla.

“Shut it,” I said, kicking her in the shin.
