The Last Flagship (The Science Officer Book 6)

“And if I refuse?” Zakhar asked, his back coming up.
Die by the sword…
“I could have already annihilated you from here if I wanted to, Storm Gauntlet,” she replied with the faintest twinkle in her eyes. “I just wanted to see if you still had what it took to be a Concord officer, Zakhar Sokolov, after everything that happened at Svalbard and Shangdu. I’m not boarding you. You and your crew will be coming aboard Hammerfield to begin repairs.”
Zakhar felt his jaw drop open.
“Who the hell are you?” he finally managed to get out.
“Once upon a time, a Yeoman in the Concord fleet, about the time your great-grandfather was born,” she smiled suddenly. It lit up her whole face, her whole being. “Then an explorer. And finally a princess, hidden in a tower.”
“I don’t understand,” Zakhar said.
Looking around, nobody else did, either. Piet and Mary-Elizabeth had made it onto the deck, but just stood there, mouths agape. Dominguez never once looked up from his board. Smart, given the environment.
“My name is Suvi. I was the Probe-Cutter Mielikki when you captured her, Captain Sokolov,” she said, that smile suddenly turning cold and hard again. “I control Hammerfield. I would have happily splattered all of you into a cooling plasma cloud, but Javier tells me that we’re partners now. I wanted to make sure you were still a warrior, Sokolov. I have a war to win.”
There were no words.
No. There was one.
Sentience.
He had done it. Javier had managed the absolutely impossible. And conned Zakhar into helping.
Javier had rescued his ship’s Sentience, after all. Hidden her away for all these years. Installed her on a ship powerful enough to engage a Concord cruiser head on.
Those bastards at Walvisbaai didn’t have a clue what was coming.
Zakhar rapped his left fist, his Concord Academy class ring, down onto the arm of his command chair. That warm, reassuring thump. The universal greeting between officers of the Concord Navy.
He looked up at her, proud and suddenly confident.
This strange woman, this Sentience shared his smile.
“All hands,” Zakhar opened a ship-wide channel. “Prepare for docking. All damage control teams prepare for soft-suit EVA. Wardroom, please brew the coffee extra thick. We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.”
