  Chapter One

  “He’s devastated.”

Lisa stood in Kennedy Van Camp’s office overlooking the city of Chicago. The hustle and bustle of the people on the streets and sidewalks below was just a reminder that she was the only person left that her father could count on. How could Owen and Landon so ruthlessly take over her father’s company and ruin his life?

“I’m sorry there wasn’t more I could do to help you,” Kennedy said with an unusual softness in her tone. Lisa turned to see her friend leaning up against the side of her polished mahogany desk. The extravagant piece of furniture was just a reminder of what her father would no longer have. She looked back out over the view in displeasure as Kennedy continued to speak. “It wasn’t my place to become involved, Lisa.”

“Because Owen and Landon are your friends?” Lisa asked bitterly. She closed her eyes, immediately feeling remorse for having said the words. She’d always been known to speak her mind, but blaming Kennedy wasn’t helping matters. Kennedy had been a good friend to her over these last few years, and it wasn’t fair to hold her responsible for what Owen and Landon had done. Besides, she thought she’d had a friendship with them as well. Images of the night that she’d had too much to drink crossed her mind. They’d seen her home safely and were perfect gentlemen. Shame on her for not realizing they were about to tear her father’s life apart, but Kennedy had nothing to do with it. “I’m sorry. That was wrong of me.”

Lisa and Kennedy had known each other for the last four years, ever since Kennedy had opened the doors of Safeword LLC. With the clientele Kennedy catered to, she and Lisa had crossed paths in the same social circles and after a while, they’d forged a friendship. From the first introduction, Lisa knew that Kennedy was a private person and she made it a point to never pry into her past. With those boundaries established, Kennedy had relaxed enough to form a rapport. Lisa knew immediately that Kennedy wasn’t like the other self-involved, shallow women whom she usually came across. And if Lisa didn’t get her emotions under control, she’d end up losing her as a friend.

“Lisa, it’s not like you don’t know Owen and Landon. We all attend the same social functions, as well as interact on a personal level depending on the occasion. They are good men,” Kennedy declared. Lisa turned on her heel to face her with arms crossed, disliking the lack of support. It was sad to know that the woman standing in front of her was the only one she could talk to. Everyone else had shown their true colors when her father had basically been financially ruined, while Kennedy didn’t judge people on the
ir monetary status. Most of their so-called friends had turned their backs on her, regardless of the fact that she had her own money. Did it matter that it was a trust fund from her mother? After all, Lisa chaired several charity boards and it wasn’t like she didn’t hold some sway within their privileged community. Kennedy held up her manicured hand to indicate she wasn’t done speaking, so Lisa held her tongue. “I know that your father built his company from the ground up, but instead of lashing out in anger without knowing all of the facts, maybe it’s finally time for you to speak with Owen and Landon.”

“Have you lost your mind?” Lisa asked, tapping the toe of one of her new Prada shoes. “You want me to have a civilized conversation with the men who ruined my father’s life? And what makes you think I don’t have all of the information I need? I sat in on multiple meetings that my father had with his employees. I heard every word.”

“Lisa, you’re an intelligent woman. Your father is cutthroat when it comes to business, just like I am. You’re old enough that you don’t wear blinders when it comes to Philip Zanier. I know you love him, but every man has his faults. And if I’m not mistaken, Owen tried contacting you several times.”

Lisa was about to adamantly deny that her father would lie to her when there was a rap on the door. Kennedy didn’t look surprised and called out for the person to enter. Jenny, Kennedy’s assistant, came in with a folder in her hand. It was obvious by what the young woman wore that she was involved in the lifestyle. A stunning gold choker was wrapped around her neck in a graceful manner and contained a diamond that sparkled in the sunlight that was shining through the high-rise windows, indicating her Dominants’ expensive tastes. She was a lucky sub.

“Thank you, Jenny. Would you please let James know that I’m withdrawing her application?” Kennedy took the folder and made her way back around her desk. “I’ll discuss it with him further this afternoon.”

“Yes, Ms. Van Camp. Would either of you care for more coffee?”

“No, thank you,” Lisa mindlessly answered, taking a closer step to the corner of the desk where the file had been placed. The name on the tab of the manila folder read Lisa Winthrop-Zanier. It was her they were discussing. Her stomach felt like it had a rock in it, and she tried to impede the rush of panic. “Kennedy, why are you denying my application? Is this because of Owen and Landon? How could you choose them over me or is it that men’s club? Do you know something that I don’t?”

“Jenny, that’ll be all for now.” Kennedy didn’t sit down, although she did place her fingertips on her immaculate desk. She waited for Jenny to leave before speaking. “Owen didn’t go into detail about why they did what they did, if that’s what you’re referring to. Lisa, I knew when you approached me six months ago regarding interest in the lifestyle that I shouldn’t have allowed you to fill out the submission paperwork. It’s a conflict of interest and it jeopardizes our friendship.”

“Don’t do this,” Lisa said, struggling to keep her pleading tone to a minimum. She didn’t want to seem desperate, yet she felt her anxiety rise at the thought of having this chance taken away from her as well. “You said yourself that I’m a submissive. I haven’t had sex in so long I’ve forgotten what it feels like to be touched by a real man, by a Dominant man.”

“Submission isn’t about sex, Lisa. And if I recall correctly, what I said was that I felt you had submissive tendencies.” Kennedy always kept her feelings close to her chest, so when she gave a sigh of frustration and sat down in her black leather chair, Lisa knew she was going to have to present a better case to get her to change her mind. “I’m your friend. You’re going through a lot right now with your father. Why don’t you let things settle and take the time to make sure this is what you want first? There are other ways of enjoying the lifestyle. I can think of two reasonably reputable clubs off the top of my head. Why not join one of them, meet some other people, and see if a D/s relationship is something that you’d like to pursue?”

“And have the public know that Lisa Winthrop-Zanier is into whips and chains?” Lisa asked incredulously. She picked up her folder and held it in the air. “I needed something somewhat more discreet, Kennedy. Your company offers that. You think I haven’t heard the rumors regarding your men’s club, what was it they call it…the Order? If what I hear is true, then they would have just as much to lose as I would. I wouldn’t have to worry about blackmail or being ousted to the press. You know how they eat this shit up in the tabloids.”

“You’re being overdramatic,” Kennedy replied, leaning back in her chair.

Kennedy’s auburn hair was pulled back in her usual bun, and Lisa had to wonder how it stayed in place. Hell, everything about the woman was meticulous. Just once, she’d like to see Kennedy a little frayed around the edges. Kennedy seemed to have shut a part of her off when it came to having a relationship with a man, because in all the conversations they’d had over the years, she never mentioned her personal life. The thought of Kennedy Van Camp in a corset and stockings strapped to a spanking table nearly brought a smile to her face—nearly. Maybe once Lisa got herself sorted out, she’d try to set Kennedy up with someone. Unfortunately, she wasn’t in any position to help anyone out. Her life was a complete mess.

“Am I?” Lisa didn’t follow up on the fact that Kennedy didn’t respond to her claim about the Order.

“Whips and chains?” Kennedy asked, almost in disbelief. “Your preconception of BDSM is a bit distorted to say the least. We’ve had this conversation multiple times. Submission is when you choose to give up control to your partner because that is what you desire. Regardless of the scenes that a Dominant may propose or the lessons that he or she may be trying to impart, submission is an emotional as well as a physical concept. The physical segment is just a small part of the overall model. If you had ever reached subspace, you would understand exactly what I am trying to impart. It truly is the proverbial out-of-body experience.”

“I’d give anything to give up control to the right Dominant,” Lisa answered, desperately needing Kennedy to see that pulling her application would be devastating to her right now. She walked over to one of the guest chairs in front of Kennedy’s desk, sitting forward on the seat. Lisa placed the folder on her lap. “When you first started this agency, the premise of Safeword LLC spread like wildfire. Do you remember the night we shared a bottle of Cristal and you explained to me what the lifestyle was? I shared with you that night I have never had an orgasm, not one. I’m too uptight and I have too much responsibility to unwind enough to allow myself to reach release. I want to give up control. I need to give up control, Kennedy, because if I don’t, I think I’ll lose my mind. And it’s not just about sex—there are times that I come home and wish someone were there to take over, someone I could trust enough to give myself up to. The promise of a placement is the only thing that has gotten me through this past year, regardless that you specialize in ménages. You could find me someone, and it doesn’t have to be two men. Please don’t take this away from me.”

Kennedy remained silent, but Lisa knew she’d heard every word. When she went to speak, but thought better of it, Lisa felt a prickle of unease go through her. Was there something that Kennedy wasn’t telling her? Was her decision to withdraw her application based on something other than their friendship being a conflict?

“Kennedy, I filled out an application before Owen and Landon took over my father’s company. That’s been a very long while now, so unless your decision relates directly to what happened, I’m not buying your reasoning. I’ve heard you say countless times that you were able to place a submissive within weeks of her application. Why has mine taken so long? Or is it that you never intended to place me in the first place?”

“I had every intention of following through, Lisa. The Doms I chose for you then are not the right ones for you now. And in all honesty, the delay gave me time to reconsider how this would affect the two of us. It’s best if you realize your submissiveness in another fashion.”

Lisa felt her heart rate accelerate at hearing that Kennedy had chosen a placement for her. Who were they? Would they be able to give her what she needed? Would she be able to please two men at once? Would she be capable of garnering their approval, enough to establish a plural relationship when she had trouble reaching release? After all, she was a novice when it came to this. In all practicality, she was an amateur in every sense of the word—submissiveness and multiple partners. But everyone knew that Kennedy had some sixth sense when it came to her posts. Had she ever been wrong? Lisa’s questions were moot if Kennedy had changed her mind. Lisa knew she was the picture of defeat as she looked down at the folder in her lap.

“Don’t you have an appointment regarding the new pediatric unit at the hospital?” Kennedy asked, pushing her chair back as she stood. “We can discuss this further when you and I have more time.”

Lisa twisted the ring on her right hand, contemplating opening the folder. It was hers. It wasn’t like she didn’t have a right to see what was inside of it. She had no doubt that the names of the men that Kennedy sought to place her with were written within. The temptation was too much. Lisa slipped her fingers underneath the top layer. She opened the folder.

  Chapter Two

“Would you get these damn cats out of here?” Landon said irritably, shooing one of the gray tiger-striped kittens away from his computer. “I think they’ve broken every damn vase in the house.”
