Tin Men (The Clay Lion Series Book 2)

She didn’t move or even consider the ring, but instead looked directly into my eyes. I could see it inside of her, the old soul she carried around. I hoped it wasn’t so old that it would cause her to hesitate or second guess how she felt about me. Or more so, how she felt about us. But instead of squealing or carrying on the way some women do when presented with a marriage proposal, she reacted as she always did to serious matters. She spoke from her heart.
“Each time I lost Branson, parts of me died. Loving you brought those parts back to life.” She closed her eyes and breathed deeply. “I don’t think I could say no to you even if I wanted to, because you’re right… the universe wants us to be as one. It just keeps bringing us back together, over and over again. I think if I said no, it would just find a way to lead me to you all over again.”
I suddenly realized I was trembling. “Do you want to say no?”
She held out her hand. She was shaking too. “I’d say yes to you in a million timelines if I had to, just to be sure we got it right.”
I slid the ring on her finger, and she sank into my arms.
“Let’s just stick with this timeline, okay?” I asked, holding her close.
“You got it.”
Brooke curled up against my chest and gazed at the ring on her finger. As we sat together, laughing and talking and swatting bugs, I reflected upon who I’d always been and who I was about to become. It was hard to believe how desperately I’d tried to discover who I was by looking backward, when all along, all I really needed to do was look to the future. My future was with Brooke, and I knew I’d never question my place in the world again.
