I explained the accidents and that the police knew that Anna Louise had killed Gina for the inspector. Now he just needed to tell them about the bribery.
My uncle said he would be back in just a few hours. What would I do until then? I had to stay and talk with him. After hanging up, I handed the phone back to Grant.
He squeezed my hand and smiled. “Is everything okay?”
I nodded. “He’s on his way back. It’ll be a couple hours.”
We watched the police as they placed the inspector in the back seat of the police car. I explained to Grant about the bribery. “I guess that was the reason that my uncle couldn’t get that building permit for his place.”
“It doesn’t surprise me,” Grant said. “I knew Porter was bad when he first showed up in Belle Grove.”
“I’m glad that he won’t be around anymore.”
We sat in silence for a moment watching the action unfolding in front of us. When the police drove off, it was time for us to make a decision. I couldn’t exactly go anywhere now that I didn’t have a car.
“What are you going to do?” Grant asked, breaking the silence.
I stared straight ahead and avoided his stare. I was going over what he had told me in my mind. I had been wrong all these years? Had we wasted time that we could have been together? I wasn’t sure what to think, but I had to stop running and face this. If he was being truthful then I really wanted to find out. After all this time, I realized that I did believe him and that I should have given him a chance back then.
“Do you think there are bayous in Arizona?” I asked with a smile.
When I looked over at him, he was smiling. “I don’t think so. If there had been I probably would have moved there years ago.”
Now it was time for me to decide what I was going to do. Could I really stay in Belle Grove? I had nothing keeping me in Arizona. I didn’t have to stay there. It would be a little sad to leave, since my place in Arizona was really nice, but the big problem with that was Grant wasn’t there.
Grant reached out and touched my hand again. He probably knew that I was debating what to do in my mind. I met his gaze.
“I think you should stay,” he said.
Grant reached over and pulled me close. His smell was intoxicating and his body felt right next to mine. How could I say no to him? With his gorgeous face looking at me and the way that he’d made me feel last night, I couldn’t turn away from that now. I knew that he was waiting for my answer and I couldn’t make him wait any longer. We had waited ten years to be together and I wanted to make up for lost time.
He took my hands in his and said, “So what do you say?”
I smiled at him and said, “I think I’ll stay a while. I’ve gotten used to your smile and I don’t think I can stay away from that.”
“So you understand what I was trying to tell you? Debra and David are married now. They live in Baton Rouge. I was helping them get back together. You jumped to conclusions when you saw us hugging,” he said.
I should have trusted him more than that.
I nodded. “I should have given you a chance. I wasted a lot of time by not trusting you.”
He touched my cheek. “Well, that’s all behind us now.”
“I should have known that I wouldn’t be able to stay away from Belle Grove forever.” I wrapped my arms around Grant’s waist.
“I’m glad you came home.” I inched closer to his face.
Grant placed his lips on mine and kissed me like I’d never been kissed before. It felt so right and now I realized that romance wasn’t just for my fictional characters. Now maybe I could have my real-life happily ever after.
I moaned beneath my breath. Grant settled his mouth on my lips.
