  Chapter One

Trinity stood with her hands on her hips shouting at her father defiantly, “I will not go and stand in front of a stupid egg with all the peasant children.”

“Yes, you will. Every girl of thirteen has to stand before the egg today.”

“I am not some girl, I am the princess, and if I say I do not want to do it, you cannot force me.”

Her father's voice rose in exasperation, “It is not for you to decide. There are laws and traditions on which our great city is built on, and those laws state that every girl will stand before the egg. The writings are quite specific.”

“Father, girls have been standing in front of that same old egg for over a thousand years, and it still has not hatched, not even the smallest crack has appeared. The thing is a dud, there is a reason there are no dragons left, because they were impotent.”

“Do not say such a thing, it is written that when the city is in great need then the dragon will rise and save us. With the barbarians raiding our trading routes across land and the Galvanian Marauders out to sea, this is our time of need.” His voice had risen dangerously now, he was used to getting his own way and his defiant daughter was beginning to test his patience beyond endurance.

“It is written, it is written.” Trinity mimicked, not realising the consequences of her words. “By who? All I ever hear is what is written. Well you can write this, I am not going!” With that she stomped off back to her bed chambers.

As far as Trinity was concerned the matter was closed, she was not going to stand with all the commoners in the great hall. She had better things to do, or at least she would find something better to do.

She had not been there long when there was a light knock on the door. “Can I come in, Miss?”

It was Rose, her maid. A good, kind young woman who had looked after her since she was five. Trinity was probably closer to Rose than to her parents who were always caught up with more important things than the well-being of their headstrong daughter. “Yes, Rose.”

In bustled the young woman, bringing in her clothes that had been freshly washed. She set about putting them away, and then she fetched Trinity's dress from where it was hanging in a wardrobe along with all of Trinity's best ceremonial dresses.

“Don't worry about that, I'm not going.” Trinity said.

“Please, Miss, you have to go.” Rose's voice was tight with hidden emotion.

“Not you as well, Rose. I refuse to go and stand in front of some stupid egg.” Trinity's anger bubbled up again, she had thought Rose would understand her; she always took her mistress's side.

“There will be trouble if you don't.”

Trinity turned to Rose, she knew the servant well enough to sense something was wrong. “What kind of trouble? It's not as though the world will end or the castle will fall. Or is that written too?” A stifled sob escaped from Rose. “What is it Rose, do not tell me you believe in all this mumbo jumbo?”

“No, Miss.” The young woman was truly crying now.

Trinity's voice softened and she put her arm around Rose and made her sit on the bed. “Tell me what is troubling you.”

“They say if you don't go to the ceremony I will be whipped and sent away to serve at a house in the valleys.” Rose could hardly speak the words her crying had reached such a pitch.

Trinity sat speechless. Her anger had now changed, it was aimed directly at her father and his royal advisers. How dare they use Rose against her? For one moment her rebellion grew, she would take Rose and get her to safety, and perhaps even run away herself. That would teach them to make her a puppet in their stupid games.

Then she looked at the poor woman next to her, she remembered that Rose had a large family, a close family which she loved. Rose would never leave, not so hastily. They had won, they had found her one weakness and she felt disgusted they had used it for so stupid a matter.

  ***

So it was that Trinity stood in front of the egg, wearing her best ceremonial dress, the first in a long line of girls. All the surrounding villages that were under the protection of the city were expected to send their thirteen year old daughters, and they all did.

Trinity glared at her father as he made the same speech he made every year. Then the highest wizard stepped forward and said the spell of awakening. As usual the highest born passed first, so Trinity took two steps forward and bowed her head in front of the egg.

Only this time something unusual happened, the egg cracked. The whole crowd gasped and fell silent as one. Trinity felt her anger to be absolute. How could this be? As the egg split in two and a young red dragon pushed its way out and stood on top of the podium she could have strangled it with her bare hands.

It took off, after flapping its wings a few times, flying out of the castle. A red creature squawking as it flew haphazardly on untested wings. Puffs of smoke came from its mouth as it slowly disappeared from view. The whole room was completely silent until it had disappeared from view, then followed an eruption of young women giggling and chatting excitedly.

Trinity knew her life was over. She was now bound to the dragon. He would return when she was twenty one and claim her as his own to breed with, until then she would be a virtual prisoner.

All Trinity could think was, “I knew I should never have come.”

  ***

Trinity stood alone in the great hall, this was it, her last night here in her home, which had also served as her prison. Tomorrow the dragon would come and claim her. It all seemed so stupid, that she should be given to a dragon who was no older than her youngest brother.

Would she be expected to wait on him, look after him? When she thought about it she wondered how he had survived as a baby, instinct, that was the only answer she could come up with.

Over the passing years, since the hatching, she had tried to glean as much information about dragons from the old stories. But most of them were tales of dragons defending the city from their enemies, not what their personality was like, or whether they ended up eating their virgin tributes.

Her mind, thankfully skirted around the thought of mating with such a beast. Even though that was her sole purpose now, a dragon's broodmare. Her one expectation, to breed the next generation of dragons.

Trinity shuddered; she had seen pictures of the old dragons, their forked tongues and scaly skin. Magnificent beasts to behold, unless you were expected to mate with one. She had seen the horses and dogs mating but they were the same, where as she was nothing like a dragon. How would they fit together?

“Uh!” Feeling the nausea rise in her stomach she pushed the thought firmly away.

A noise behind her made her jump, there was someone in the shadows. She moved to leave, wanting to be alone, to say goodbye to her old life with no one to watch and pity her. Even Rose had been told to leave.

Trinity walked quietly to the great carved doorway
that was the entrance to the hall. It had been carved out of gigantic tree trunks brought to the city when it was built by the first dragon.

“Bloody dragons,” she muttered under her breath.

“Princess?” A young man, perhaps a year or two older than her stepped out of the shadows. He came to stand before her, not quite blocking her way, yet he gave her a sense of uneasiness.

“Yes.” She pulled herself up to her full height, assuming the mantle of the Dragon Princess as she was now called.

“I am sorry if I startled you, but I wished to meet the one who will be given to the dragon.” His voice was strange, an accent she had never heard before.

“Well, here I am. You will see me tomorrow when the ceremony is complete. I assume you have travelled here to bare witness.”

He laughed, a low rumble that started deep inside him. It made the hairs on the back of her neck rise on end, both exciting, and troubling, her. “Yes, I have come to bare witness. It seems you are not happy with the prospect. Is it not a great honour to be bound to such a magnificent creature?”

She closed her eyes and absorbed his voice, his presence, it was as though he put a spell on her from which she was powerless to break free. Summoning all her strength she opened her eyes and looked at him directly. “I know my duty.”

“Duty, you will give your life over to duty?” His voice purred, lulling her.

“I have a duty to my people to gain the dragon's protection. Our city and surrounding villages are constantly under threat from barbarians and marauders.” She tried to take a step around him, but he moved with her as though they were caught up in a dance.

“Have you ever thought of running away?”

“No!” She looked him straight in the eye and knew he could tell she was lying. “Once, when I was younger. Fifteen, I believe.”

She remembered the day well, it was a beautiful day, early summer sunshine shone over the forest. The new green leaves seemed to beckon her as they fluttered in the warm breeze.

After being stuck in the castle for so long she could stand it no longer. She went down to the stables, grabbing some bread and fruit on the way. Then she crept out to the stables and left by one of the side gates while the guards lazed against the wall.

It was so easy, there was a little used path which she followed, no one took any notice of her. When she became a small speck to the people of the castle she leapt for joy and raced to the forest.

Trinity had spent the day under the cool leaves, swimming in the river and lying in the dappled sun to dry. When the afternoon wore on and she knew someone would soon miss her she made the decision not to go back. They could find someone else to be the dragon's slave, for that was what she saw herself as.

Slowly she made her way deeper into the forest, it was only when she heard the hounds baying that any sense of urgency took her, and by then it was too late. The soldiers caught her very quickly, she could not outrun the dogs and the horses.

She had never seen the master of the guards so angry, it was not until she arrived back at the castle she knew why. That evening the two guards were whipped while she stood horrified and watched. Her father would not let it end until the men were bloodied and Trinity swore over and over again that she would never try to escape her fate.

The man stood and watched her face as she remembered that day, he cocked his head as the emotions played across her face, taking in everything about her.

  “You were caught?” he asked.

“Yes,” Trinity replied, masking her face as she had become so used to. “And tomorrow I will fulfil my destiny and be eaten by the dragon.”

He laughed again, heat crept over her skin from the power of it. “I think the dragon wants to do more to you than eat you.”

She blushed. “I do not know, all the stories tell of the great deeds of the dragons, never how they treated their captives.”

“Captives? A strange way of putting it, the dragon is as much bound to you as you are to him. He cannot escape his fate if the chosen one is a virgin when she is given to him.”

Now it was Trinity's turn to laugh, “Oh, there is no doubt that I am a virgin. Every man for miles around knows what will happen if he dares even look at me in an improper way.”

“You have never experienced so much as a kiss?”

“Not even holding hands. That would surely have led to someone having their hand chopped off. My father is very good at getting me to do as I am supposed to. He never lays a finger on me, but makes me watch the suffering I have caused.”

Again he watched her face, and the sadness there. “And what if I, a stranger were to show you what you have been missing?”

  “A kiss?”

“To start with.” Trinity knew it was wrong but her rebelliousness had been chained for too long. “Very well, one kiss.”

He came closer to her, she could feel the heat emanating from his body. His hair was black as the night and his eyes nearly as dark, but tinged with red flecks. She looked at him and was mesmerised, when he touched her she felt a burning sensation fill her body. Not only heat from his touch, this came from within, a need, a yearning.

Bending his head he captured her lips in a soft kiss, when she yielded to him his kiss deepened as though he were testing her, tasting her. Then he became rougher, his hand threading through her long auburn hair to pull her close.

He excited her, for the first time since she had been chosen by the dragon she felt alive. She never realised how much she had been restrained from being who she really was. She clung to him, giving herself to him completely. Returning his rough kiss with one filled with want and need, her knees grew weak.

Wrapping his other hand around her slender waist he pulled her towards him. Pressed tightly against his body she felt the hard length of his cock pushing against her stomach. Trinity gasped at the size of him, she had only ever seen horses mating and his cock seemed as big as those of her father's prize stallions.

With her body supported by his he released her waist and slid his hand down to her thigh. Slowly he inched her skirts up, bunching them higher until he could touch her clit through her under garments.

Trinity thought she would explode. She had touched herself down there in the dark of the night, but that was nothing against the feel of the stranger's fingers against her most private place. It was delicious in its inappropriateness. His hand left her clit, instead travelling higher until it discovered the ties to the fabric keeping her respectfully covered and pulled them so they dropped around her ankles.

Trinity knew she should stop him, her head was filled with her voice, screaming, telling him to stop, yet his kiss took away her power to put voice to these words. She wanted him to continue, to find out what it was to be with a man, not some child dragon. Why shouldn't she do this, surely no one would ever know, after all there was no test to see if she were still a virgin, was there?

She grasped his clothing with her hands as he pushed one finger inside her sex. The shock of feeling him inside her made her breath catch in her throat. His finger slowly went a little deeper, there it met her resistance.

“You truly are a virgin,” He said removing his finger.

Trinity had no words to say to him. She was stunned, lost in the feelings his hands and mouth dragged from her body. He knelt down before her and lifted his head to press his mouth against her clit. Kissing her and nipping at the sensitive flesh, this time it was Trinity who plunged her hands into his hair and pulled him towards her core.

His tongue licked at her sensitive nub, making her thrust her hips forward so her mound was forced forward onto his face. He lifted her leg and placed it on his shoulder, supporting her weight and making it easier for him to push his tongue into her sex.

Her world exploded, he pushed deep inside her, all she could think was how could a man’s tongue be so long, so thick. She whimpered as his tongue took her nearer to her first orgasm. She had never known anything like this, she had no idea this was what it felt like
to be with a man, and tomorrow she would lose all chance of ever knowing when she was given to the dragon.

But tonight she could change that, change her destiny, all she had to do is give way to her feelings and let this man take her. Then tomorrow she could stand in front of the dragon, and her father and tell them all she as no longer pure, no longer a virgin.

She was coming, waves of pleasure taking over as her body tensed and pulsed against him. Her sex dripped with her juices and the wet of his tongue. Trinity felt her sex contracting hard as she let herself go to experience this exquisite pleasure.

When her orgasm ended he stopped, letting her skirts fall to the floor as he rose. “Now, princess, you have a choice. I would take you now, claim your virginity and free you from the bond that holds you to the dragon.”

Trinity had never been so tempted by the forbidden fruit in all her life, it would be so easy to say yes to him. He would take her right here and she would be free to be herself again.

  “I cannot.”

“Why? Do you not want to be free?” His voice persistent.

  “Yes, but not like this.”

“I thought you wanted your freedom?”

“I do, but my people will be at risk. They wait for the dragon to protect them against those who would steal from them. And what if the dragon takes his anger out on them...” She paused, and then she was the Dragon Princess again. “They do not deserve this.”

“So you would deny me for the sake of your people?” His voice held no anger, he sounded inquisitive, like a small child trying to learn.

“Yes, and for your sake. They would find you and kill you when they found out. I would not have that on my conscience.”

He pressed close to her again, the heat of his body pulling her towards him. She had to resist, and try to find a way of getting away from him. Yet it was nearly impossible, his pull was too strong.

“You could be free.” His words affect her brain, dulling her rational mind. He was right, she would be free, for the first time in her life she would be able to go where she wanted and do as she pleased. After all her father would no doubt banish her without a penny to her name.
