Right Kind Of Wrong

“So do you have plans for this evenin’ ?” I asked her.

  “Huh…what?” she stuttered out.

I took a bite of the sandwich, the cheese and turkey with smoked mustard sauce made me groan. Tabitha’s eyebrows shot up and her eyes got big. I swallowed the delicious bite before opening the water and taking a drink. Leaning against the tire of the tractor I smiled at her, “This is fuckin’ delicious.” I offered her a bite and she shook her head. I shrugged, “Anyway, we’re all goin’ out to Tyler’s for a pasture party. If you’re not doin’ anything you can come with us.” I said. I knew that her and Vi had been talking more so hopefully she wouldn’t get mad that I invited her, Julia probably wouldn’t be pleased but I had to get Tabitha introduced to our group of friends and classmates somehow.

“Umm a pasture party?” Tabitha asked, confusion clear in her tone.

I swallowed the bite in my mouth, “Yep, go light a bonfire sit around on tailgates and hay bails maybe drink a beer or two—just a fun way to kick back and relax. I figured we could introduce you to people so you’re not a complete newbie.”

“You drink?” She asked in shock.

  I winked, “No.”

“Will Julia and Vidalia be mad if I go?”

“Nah, I think Vi’s finally coming around more, Julia just doesn’t know you. This’ll give you two the chance to talk and get to know each other.”

Tabitha stared at me, our eyes locked on each other’s for a few seconds. “I’ll uhm…I’ll ask mom.” She spun around and practically ran out of the shop.

  < < < > > >

“What’s taking her so long, did she decide not to go?” Vi asked. Julia had called asking if we had changed our minds about going out since we hadn’t been to pick her up yet.

I shrugged a shoulder, “Go knock on her door and see.”

Another ten minutes passed before Vi came out of Tabitha’s room. She started laughing, “She didn’t know what to wear and didn’t want to sound like a city slicker and ask me what to wear, so she was looking it up online...What to wear to a pasture party!” I couldn’t help but laugh and neither could Vi.

A few minutes later Tabitha came downstairs, she had on a red plaid button up shirt that I knew was Vi’s, a pair of short denim shorts and a pair of Vi’s worn cowgirl boots. My eyebrows shot up, Tabitha looked fucking hot! My heart sped up, I licked my lips before walking away. “Let’s go!” I yelled as I started for the pickup. I heard them both laugh and heard their boots thudding across the floor as they rushed to catch up with me.

I got in the pickup and started it, Vi opened the passenger side door and motioned for Tabitha to get in. She paused for a second before climbing up into the pickup and sitting in the middle of the seat. Vi got in and shut the door. “He’s not nice with the shifter or I would have sat there.” Vi said with a laugh.

Tabitha turned her legs so both knees where on one side closer to Vi, “I’ll tell you right now it’s easier if you just straddle the damn thing.” I said with a sigh. Her head whipped to the side and her eyes got big but she didn’t move. “Suit yourself.” I mumbled. I shifted the pickup into reverse, the shifter slammed against the side of her leg.

“Ouch!” she attempted to rub the spot but couldn’t because the shifter was still pressing into her leg and my hand was still on the knob.

Vi laughed, “He’s right, wait til’ he shifts into first gear then straddle it.”

When I put it in first gear Tabitha moved so that her knees were on each side of the shifter, her thigh pressed against mine. I had to stop myself from resting my hand on her thigh like I would with Julia.

On the drive to Julia’s, Vi and Tabitha talked non-stop about the upcoming school year. “If you want me to go with you to meet the dance team coach I will. She’s pretty cool, but man she takes it so serious! You guys practice forever.”

Tabitha laughed softly, “I’ve been in dance since I was four years old. I’ll show you all the trophies and medals I’ve won with the teams I’ve been on.”

We pulled in to Julia’s driveway, I wasn’t paying attention to the conversation between Vi and Tabitha anymore. I put the pickup in neutral and pushed the emergency break down before I got out. Julia was just walking out the front door when I started up the steps of the porch. “Hey beautiful.” I pulled her into me. She threw her arms over my shoulders before I kissed her.

She smiled against my lips, “I was startin’ to think ya’ll left me here.”

“Nope, Tabitha couldn’t decide what to wear.” I tried to kiss her again but she pulled back.

“She's going?” She looked around my shoulder. “And she’s sitting in my spot?”

“Hey,” I put my hand against her cheek so she would look at me, “you two have to get to know each other and she needs to meet the others. I promise you…she’ll never take your spot away.” I said.

“Okay, sorry. I just didn’t know she was coming too.”

We walked down the steps hand in hand. Vi got out of the pickup and so did Tabitha. Vi opened the third door and started to get in the back but Tabitha said she would sit back there instead. “Fine by me!” Vi said with a chuckle.

Once we were all loaded back up in the pickup and headed to Tyler’s, Julia and Vi stopped talking long enough for me to introduce Tabitha to her. She turned and extended her hand over the seat, “Sorry I wasn’t ignoring you. I’m glad we finally get to meet, you’re absolutely beautiful!” Julia said and I could tell she was smiling.

The three girls talked about dance teams, cheer leading, and who they would be sure to introduce Tabitha to at the party. By the time we got there my head was pounding. That was too much talking and giggling for me to handle.

I backed the pickup in between Tyler and Corbin’s; Vi threw her door open and got out then opened the back door for Tabitha. I got out and held my hand out to help Julia down. “She’s really nice.” Julia said with a smile.

  I nodded my head, “I need a beer…”

She laughed then lifted onto her tiptoes and kissed me, “I’m sure you’re tired of hearing girls talk so we’ll go introduce her to others and let you have some time with your friends.”

“Please do!” I said with a laugh and kissed her before walking to the back of the pickup and lowering the tailgate. Corbin walked over and handed me a cold bottle of beer, “Who the fuck is that other chic?” he asked.

“That’d be our dad’s girlfriends daughter, Tabitha.” I twisted the cap off and took a long pull of beer.

“Seriously? That’s your step sister?” he asked with shock.

“They aren’t married yet.” I argued.

Tyler walked up, “Please tell me she’s single!”

I shrugged my shoulders, “I have no clue, never asked if she is or not.”

Corbin shook his head, “I saw her first!”

I rolled my eyes, “Please change the subject, I’ve just listened to three girls ramble on and on about lord only knows what for the last forty five minutes.”

They both laughed, “I wouldn’t be bitchin’!” Corbin said.

For the next hour or so we talked about the upcoming wheat harvest. Tyler’s dad also had a large operation like my dad and Corbin bounced between our fields helping us both when we needed him to.

I was working on my third beer when Julia, Vi, and Tabitha walked over to the pickup. Julia positioned herself between my legs and kissed me. “Did you miss me?” she asked.

“Always.” I said with a grin.

Corbin extended his hand to Tabitha, “Pleasure to meet you, names Corbin.” He said with a smile. Then Tyler nudged him away with his shoulder and introduced himself. Tabitha smiled and shook both of their hands. Tyler wasted no time asking her if she had a boyfriend. She blushed, “No, we broke up shortly after I told him I was going to be moving here.”

“HEY HEY HEY!” A loud voice boomed from behind us. Tabitha looked at all of us waiting for one of us to tell her who was approaching.

  “Fuckers
started without us?” Morgan said. Morgan Green, the star running back and upcoming senior draped his arm over Tyler and Corbin’s shoulders. A few of the other guys that were going to be seniors raided the beer cooler and handed him a beer. Tabitha was staring at him, the corner of her bottom lip pinched between her teeth. He smiled at her, “And who might this hot little lady be?” He asked.

Vi rolled her eyes, “So subtle, Morgan. This is Tabitha…Tabitha—Morgan.”

He held his hand out to her, when she placed her hand in his he never took his eyes off of hers as he lifted her hand to his lips. “Pleasure to meet you.” He said.

Tabitha blushed, “Nice to meet you too.”

“Come on I’ll introduce you to more of the guys.” Vi pulled her away from our small group.

Morgan turned and looked at me, “Is it me or is she a Heather Morris look alike. How old is she?”

I shook my head, “Gonna be a junior.”

  He grinned, “Is she single?”

Julia laughed, “I’ve never seen Morgan turn the charm on like that. Not even for Vi!”

Morgan narrowed his eyes at her, “Hey,” He held his hands up in defense, “I tried but she rejected me. It’s her loss.”

I couldn’t help but laugh, Vi admitted to me one time that although Morgan was “sexy”, he just wasn’t her type.

For another hour we all talked and laughed together, I kept finding myself looking for Tabitha. From the other side of the bonfire our eyes connected. She gave a small smile before quickly looking away when Morgan approached her.

“You about ready to head home?” Julia asked around a yawn.

“Yep!” I finished my beer and tossed it in the back of Tyler’s pickup. “Tell Vi she’s gonna have to drive though.”

  “Oh god!” Julia sighed.

She hurried away to get the other two, I told the guys that we were going to leave. “If you don’t hear from me at some point tomorrow…check the ditches cuz Vi’s drivin’ us home.”

They all laughed, knowing she still wasn’t very good at driving.

Vi skipped to the pickup, with Tabitha and Morgan hanging back a ways. Vi got into the driver seat, Julia sat in the middle and I waited for Tabitha. She had her phone out typing something in it then Morgan bent down and kissed her on the cheek. I opened the third door and climbed into the back seat so she could sit up front. Julia looked at me, “Umm what are you doing?”

I reclined myself across the seat and pulled my hat down over my eyes, “This way I can ignore all the giggling and talking.” I mumbled with a grin.

“You’re such a dick!” Vi said with a chuckle.

“I think you better concentrate on driving without putting us in early graves.”

She mumbled a few select cuss words before putting the pickup in first gear, releasing the brake and slowly driving through the rutted field.

“So how many numbers did you add to your phone tonight? You’ll have to excuse the way some of the guys acted. They’re like a bunch of sharks circling fresh meat.” Vi said to Tabitha.

“Quite a few, everybody is really nice. Some of those girls seem kind of distant, probably because I’m new though.” Tabitha said.

“Morgan sure took interest to you in a hurry. He’s a really nice guy too.” Julia said.

“He said he wants to take me out on a date sometime and that he’ll text me.” I could tell Tabitha was smiling. “I’m not going to hold my breath though. I’m sure every girl in the school is after him.”

The girls all laughed, “He was hot after Vi for a while.” Julia told Tabitha.

  “Oh…sorry. I won’t talk to him anymore, I didn’t know…he didn’t say…”

Vi interrupted her, “He’s all yours, he’s just not my type. Trust me…there’s NOTHING between us. Never has been, never will be!”

  “Are you sure?”

  “One hundred percent.”

I rolled my eyes and started to doze off.

“Wake up baby.” Julia said softly. I opened my eyes. “I just wanted to give you a kiss goodnight.” She smiled.

  “I’ll walk you up.”

Tabitha got out so that Julia could then I popped the handle to open the door. I stretched my arms and pulled Julia into my chest. She turned with my arm still over her shoulder we walked up to her house. “I’m sure you’ll be busy tomorrow and I’ve gotta help mom around the house. Text me when you get a chance.” She said.

I leaned down and kissed her on the lips. When I tried to push my tongue into her mouth she pushed at my chest. “They can see us.” She said with a small laugh.

  “So?!” I responded.

“I’m not going to make out with you, that’s just wrong when people are watchin’!”

I kissed her again, “I’m just messin’ with you. I’ll talk to you tomorrow sometime.”

“I love you.” She kissed me then started to open the door.

  “I love you too.”

When I got back to the pickup Tabitha scooted to the middle and I sat in the passenger seat. “She’s such a sweet person.” Tabitha said about Julia.

“Yeah, I happen to think so too.” I replied before reclining the seat back and pulling my hat down over my eyes again. I blocked out the conversation between Vi and her since they had started talking about Morgan. Then, suddenly, Vi slammed on the brakes. I sat up abruptly thinking we were headed for the ditch, “What the…oh.” Three doe were jumping the fence on opposite side of the road in the ditch.

My hand was resting on Tabitha’s thigh and her hand was shaking as she squeezed my hand. Vi had her head rested against the steering wheel, “Holy shit!” she said with a laugh and a shaky voice. I couldn’t stop looking at where my hand was resting, the way Tabitha’s skin felt against my hand, I brushed my thumb back and forth against her silky hot skin. She looked down at my hand and pushed it away.

“I gotta piss.” I opened the door and got out of the pickup. I stared up at the glistening stars and took a few deep breaths. Touching her shouldn’t have had any effect on me, my heart rate shouldn’t have sped up so fast that it felt like my heart was going to beat out of my chest and my dick shouldn’t have started to get hard. After reliving myself I walked back to the pickup and got in.

“You just pee--out in the open?” Tabitha asked with a disgusted tone.

“Yep.” I leaned back in the seat and stayed silent the rest of the drive home.

  Chapter 4

I wasn’t very excited about going to the party because I was afraid I wouldn’t fit in, that absolutely nobody would talk to me, but to my surprise I was completely wrong. I met so many people I knew that I would get their names confused or forget them but I had fun.

When I met Morgan I couldn’t stop staring at him. He was taller than Vance by a couple of inches, but wasn’t as muscular as him. As Vidalia and I walked around the groups of people I couldn’t help but look around at all the people. They were sitting on the tailgates of their pickups, talking and having a good time. When I looked over to where Julia and Vance were sitting, I found Vance staring at me. The orange from the fire cast a glow over his face and his eyes sparkled. I quickly looked away when I heard Morgan’s laugh as he approached us.

Morgan leaned against the tailgate of the pickup we were standing by, “So, Tabitha,” he grinned at me. “You’re the new step sister huh?”

I laughed and tucked a stand of hair behind my ear¸ “That’s me.”

He licked his lips as he stared at mine, “And you’re single?”

I nodded my head yes and could feel myself blushing.

Our conversation was cut short by people coming over to talk to him, it was obvious he was very well liked and more than likely one of the popular guys. I caught a few of the other girls glaring at me and whispering to each other. “Don’t worry about them.” Morgan whispered in my ear. I turned and looked at him, his grin was in place and I couldn’t help but stare into his hazel eyes. We talked about him playing football and what my old school was like
, he told me that the school I would be attending next year was a pretty laid back fun place. When I told him that I want to be on the dance team, a smile spread across his face, “I could handle staring at you during practice. Ya’ll will be practicing on the main field while we are on the practice one.”

There was just something about Morgan that made me smile, we exchanged phone numbers and he promised to text or call me so we could go out on a date.

I was surprised that Vance seemed to be drunk, and Julia didn’t seem to be very happy with him either. I was relieved that Julia, Vidalia and I were able to get along. On the ride home Vidalia almost hit three deer that darted out in front of the truck. Vance gripped onto my thigh and sat up in his seat. In a moment of shock I covered his hand with mine. An unfamiliar heat spread up my leg, it felt like his hand was searing my skin sending fire through my veins. When he caressed my leg with his thumb I shoved his hand away, the heated chill that went down my spine was something I had never felt before. He shouldn’t be even touching me since he was in love with Julia.

  < < < > > >

Over the following weeks Morgan and I talked on the phone every chance we could, and would send random snap chats to each other. Since he was going to be a senior and I was going to junior, mom was pretty worried about me going on a date with him. Kevin reassured her that Morgan was a nice kid that wouldn’t disrespect me.

I never talked to Vance about the way his touch made me feel that night and he never mentioned it, so I just chalked it up to the fact that he was startled and drank too much at the party.

Harvest was in full swing, so Kevin and Vance were up early and worked late unless the ‘moisture’ was too high on the wheat. Being from the city, I had no clue what that meant in farming terms and didn’t want to ask. So I turned to Google for answers. Mom and I would make meals and she would take them out to the guys in the field. Vidalia even worked driving a tractor pulling the grain cart, she offered to let me ride with her but I declined. She laughed, “You don’t know what your missing out on…I mean it’s so much fun!”
