“You going to be okay?” Jack asked.

“You know me, Jack. I bounce back.”

  “Yeah, you do.”

She took a deep breath. “I’ve been in contact with my sister in San Francisco, so we’re going to move in with her.”

  “That’s a good idea.”

She was a strong woman. Like Jack, her upbringing had been hard. It had shaped who she was today. He had no doubt that she would eventually find someone good for her. Someone good for Ruby. Someone who could give them a life with all the little things that mattered. All the things he only wished he could give.

“They’ll be keeping tabs on you,” Jack said.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they are listening to this.”

“Yeah.” He paused. “Well, take care of yourself, Theresa, and Ruby.”

  “Will do.”

The line went dead and Jack felt a deep ache inside. Before he tossed the disposable phone, he pulled out a piece of paper he’d taken from Agent Baker’s room. The one with Dana’s name, number and address. He dialed the number and waited, looking out at the trucks in the service station.

  The phone was answered. “Hello?”

  It was Dana Grant.

  “Hello?”

Jack didn’t answer. He hung up, tossed the phone into a garbage can, slung his bag over his shoulder and dashed across the small road to the line of Mack Trucks.

  “Can I get a ride?”

  “Where you heading?”

  “I haven’t decided yet.”

With that, he stepped up into to the truck and slammed the door. The truck roared to life and eased out of the truck stop. A light rain began to fall and as he stared out the window he thought about what lay ahead.

There was no telling what tomorrow would bring.

He didn’t know what the next town would offer or whose path he would cross.

Every day was another chance to start again.

One day. One hour. One minute at a time.

That’s how he would live his life.
