He cried out, and she froze. “What?”
“Nothing. Wonderful. Surprising.”
“Ah, well, then that’s all right.”
“Very much so.”
She couldn’t help it. She loved that he would say “very much so” when his dick was pointing to his chin. “Don’t ever stop being just like you are,” she said.
He kissed her bare shoulder. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I know. I want to totally jump your bones, but the condoms are in the bathroom.”
He deflated—not his dick, his chest. “All the way over there?”
“You could probably reach by stretching.”
“If only.” He kissed her and then stood up, still waving his flag. “I’ll be back in a moment.”
“That would be charming,” she said, very politely in her best British accent.
“You mock me, but you Americans have butchered a perfectly fine language.”
“Really? You want to talk linguistics? Now?”
“Point taken.” He hurried to the bathroom, giving her a nice look at his naked rear. If all those women from the embassy knew what was hiding under those wool suits, there would be a line outside his door.
He was back in a flash with the whole box. “I can’t find the expiration date.”
She laughed. Only Colin would be so bloody sensible. “It’s sometime this year. We’re fine.”
A brilliant smile made her insides twitch. “I was joking. Now, where was I?”
“About to be jumped.”
He climbed on the bed again. She, leaning up on her elbows, laughed at how his feet hung off the bed. “We should have thought this through. Gone back to your place.”
“The hell. I want you. Now.”
She melted back down to her pillow. “Oh, you just keep getting better.”
He was above her, looking down into her eyes. “So badly.”
She kissed him, long and slow, her hands on either side of his head. This would be their first time, but only the first. They had all the time in the world to make love in every way they could imagine.
He flopped down beside her, on his back. “I’d better—”
She brought out a condom from the box on the bed. “Let me.”
He smiled and his cock jumped.
“Oh, look, it’s excited.”
“Don’t you dare name it.”
“What?”
He sighed. “Nothing.”
She ripped the package open, then straddled his legs. She knew how to do this, even though it had been a while, but first, before there was all that latex, she wanted something more personal.
Sliding down a bit, she leaned over and took the base in her hand, holding him steady. Then, with a wicked grin, she licked him straight up all the way to the crown. She swirled her tongue to the sound of him gasping, to the feel of him thrusting, then holding steady.
“What’s wrong?”
“Maggie, love, if you do that again, it’ll be a while until we truly get the show on the road.”
“It might be worth it.”
“I want to be inside you.”
She didn’t argue. Carefully, not even daring to breathe, she sheathed him in the condom, already anxious for when they wouldn’t have to go through this nonsense.
He tugged at her arms, and she expected him to throw her down on the bed. Instead, he pulled her up to her knees and then, with his hands cupping her ass, he lifted her until she was centered above him. Like they’d been on the couch.
“Why, Mr. Griffith. You surprise me.”
“There’s more to me than meets the eye.”
She looked down and took hold of him once more. “Obviously.”
No more teasing. She couldn’t wait. Closing her eyes, she slid down, but not too much. Just enough to feel the crown slip inside.
He groaned, but he didn’t buck. His left hand squeezed her thigh and his right palm brushed against her already hard nipple.
Clever man, that almost ruined her plan. But still, she moved her hips up and back, teasing them both.
“You’re going to kill me,” he said, his voice as tight as his muscles.
“Not yet.” She moved lower by inches, stopping just until she could relax fully, then she’d go deeper. When there were still a few more inches to go, she couldn’t stand it anymore. She sank down all the way, letting him fill her, loving being filled.
“Oh, God, Maggie.”
He bucked, and she held on.
It wasn’t nearly as quick as she’d feared. He surprised her again when he flipped her to the bottom, when he positioned her so perfectly that his cock not only went deep, but brushed against her clit with every push.
And yet it was his kiss that tipped her over the edge. Which was no surprise at all.

THEY WERE UNDER THE covers now, and after some deft maneuvering of bent knees and make-do cuddling, his whole body was on the bed and he felt better than he had in years. That he could touch her, that she wanted him to touch her, was incredible.
It didn’t hurt that she was touching him back.Outside noises bled into the room, but weren’t enough to bother. In some foolish part of his brain, he wanted to think all the rejoicing was in their honor. Why had he thought keeping Maggie at arm’s length was a good idea? The irony stung. So afraid of losing her that he’d nearly lost her. Not to mention wasted so much time on his rationalizations.
“One hell of a day,” she said.
“What?”
“I said, this has been one hell of a day. Did you speak to Blake?”
“Briefly.”
“So he really is all right.”
“Yes. He is. I would think he’s in hot water with the honchos at BBC, but he’s alive and fit.”
“He’s always in hot water.”
“Usually with a few beautiful women.”
She ran her fingernails gently down the length of his penis. He inhaled sharply and tweaked her nipple as a thank-you.
“I didn’t know you had a thing for cowgirl style,” she said, her smile evident in her voice.
“I didn’t, either. What’s cowgirl style?”
She laughed. “Me on top. You know, waving the metaphorical cowboy hat, shouting yippee-ki-yay.”
He lifted his head to stare at her. “You have no idea how many things I want to do with you.”
“Can’t wait to find out.”
His head landed on the pillow again as his hand brushed down to her stomach. Her skin was soft as silk, and he very much liked the sweet, small V of her pubic hair. Altogether perfect. “It’s because I’m British, isn’t it? Our reputations aren’t quite on par with the French or Italians.”
“Mmm. I’ve always known you were polite on the outside and a wild man in private.”
“I’m not that polite.”
“Ooo, yummy.”
He smiled, but cogent thought was returning and there were things to say. “Now, about Jeffrey—”
She coughed and blushed. “He’s a very nice man I know from work. But he wasn’t my date. I just wanted you to think I wasn’t dateless on New Year’s.”
Colin snorted. All that worry and he wasn’t even real. “What about moving to D.C.?”
Her voice sobered. “That’s very real. I’d put off telling them my answer until after the audition. Can’t put it off any longer, though.”
“I’m sorry about all of that,” he said.
“All of what?”
“Calling you. I knew how important today was, and I should never have asked you to come. I stole your big dream.”
“It’s all right. I suppose I could have gone to the audition, then come to you if it was that important to me. There was honestly no place I’d have rather been. I love you. Which begs the question.”
“What question is that?”
“It’s midnight.”
“That’s not a question.”
“We’re starting an entirely new year. And, well
, this.” She waved her hand vaguely over the two of them.
As he petted her and let his fingers slide where they would, he thought about what she meant. Everything had changed. He not only had his closest friend, he had his lover. In his arms. But she wouldn’t be living in New York and that was a problem. One he could solve. “I’ll change home base to D.C. Take the commuter flight along with everyone else. It’ll be better.”
She snuggled closer. “What do you mean, better?”
“This will be the year you’re mine.”
She sighed. “I like the sound of that.”
“Now I have a question.”
“What’s that?”
“Why didn’t you say anything? If you felt this way, we could have—”
She sighed. “You were so afraid that we’d fall apart. I guess I was afraid, too. I didn’t want anything to happen to us. So I sublimated. Stupid, huh?”
“No. This was all on me. I was rather insistent, wasn’t I? But you’re the most important person in my life. You know that, right?”
“Yes. I’ve known that for a long time. Maybe that’s why I couldn’t let it go. It wasn’t easy, though. I was ready to throw in the towel.”
“I’m glad you kissed me. I think I knew then. That moment. It was a revelation.”
“It could have gone more smoothly.”
Unable to help himself, he pulled her closer and let himself luxuriate. “You’re right. It could have. Suppose we make up for it now.”
He held her steady as he took her mouth. Kissing Maggie was unlike anything he’d experienced before. She stole his breath and his sense and all he wanted was more.
Simply feeling her naked body had him wanting her again and even when he tried to slow things down, to let himself linger at her lips, he couldn’t stop moving against her. Soft, pliant, her body moved with him as he slid one hand down between her legs.
She pulled back. “Wait…don’t…stop,” she said, gasps coming between each word.
He stilled his finger. “Do you want me to wait or not?”
Maggie laughed. “I want to get the condom, and I was afraid I’d get carried away.”
He closed his eyes and couldn’t help but laugh, as well. “This bed is too small. We’ll need to get a large flat in D.C.”
She had just kissed his chin and that’s where she stayed for several long breaths. He didn’t move, either, not quite sure what was happening.
“You want us to move in together?”
“Yes. I’d like to come home to you at night, and wake up to you in the morning.”
She pushed him backward, luckily not off the bed. “You don’t think it’s a bit sudden? I mean, don’t you need time to get used to all this? To me?”
“We’ve already wasted too much time.”
“Living together is a big deal,” she said finally. “You like being on your own, you’ve told me that.”
He touched her beautiful cheek. “I’m already used to putting your bourbon and 7-Up in the cupboard. I stock your awful cookies. You’re already converted to the cult of Doctor Who. Besides, we won’t be moving into my place. It’ll be ours. And you’ll have to get used to me.”
“Wow.”
“If you want to, that is.”
She nodded, looking a bit dazed. “I want to.”
“Perhaps it wouldn’t be presumptuous, then, to tell you I want these things for a long time to come?”
After a few deep breaths she smiled. “Let me see if I can translate that to American.” She furrowed her brow and bit her lower lip enticingly. “You want this to last for the rest of our lives?”
“I do. Now that I’ve seen it, I can’t see anything else. I love you. I want you.”
She kissed him squarely and deeply. When she pulled back, she whispered, “My miracle.”
“What’s that?”
Maggie shook her head. “Nothing. Just…I’m happy. Tomorrow we’ll sit down and talk about what’s next, okay? I want us both rational and thoughtful. But for the rest of January 1, I don’t want to think about anything but making love. Agreed?”
He kissed the tip of her nose. “Absolutely.” Then he closed his eyes as he kissed her lips, swept in to taste her again. It wasn’t simply the first day of the year, but the first day of his real life. The life they were meant to share.
