“I love you too, Thaddeus…more than you know. More than I thought possible.”
Thaddeus slipped out of his chair and got down on one knee. He held Jana’s hand. “Then marry me.” He looked into her eyes. “Please, honey…marry me. I want you to be my wife.”
Jana choked with tears and was unable to speak.
Thaddeus took a velvet box from his pocket and handed it to Jana. With trembling hands, she opened the box to find a lovely diamond engagement ring. “Oh, Thaddeus…”
“Just say yes.”
“Yes…yes!” Jana hugged him. Then Thaddeus stood and pulled her into his arms. He lifted her off her feet and it seemed like he would never let her go.
Then Thaddeus lowered her to her feet and kissed her deeply and passionately. “I don’t deserve to be this happy,” he said breathlessly.
Jana grinned. “That’s the thing I came to tell you…you do, Thaddeus. You deserve happiness.”
Despite all his reserve, Thaddeus didn’t hold back—he smiled brightly. And when he did, it was as though the sun had come out, because he lit up the room.
Epilogue
The wedding was planned for the fall. Thaddeus had been concerned over juggling their lives so they could be together. But Jana had it all figured out.
Thaddeus had wondered if Jana would be okay with his bodyguard job after the wedding. She’d told him that saving lives was a rare talent and shouldn’t be wasted. She was proud of him. She also assured him that she didn’t plan to require any more saving from him…just loving. And encouraged him to protect others who needed it.
Jana’s new product had been released, and the sales of Heart Rate Jewel had taken off. She’d never liked paperwork, so she hired a manager to handle the international operations. That way she could focus on the outdoor activities she preferred and live wherever she wanted.
Her focus was on snow sports for the youth. With the proceeds from the sales, she was able to fund several programs throughout the state and had become very involved with those activities. Her ex-husband had been very supportive. He hadn’t claimed that he was owed anything from her success. Instead, he was pleased that she was putting the money to good use.
Jana turned over the ski shop to her business partner. Alton welcomed the opportunity and was grateful for the sizable promotion bonus. As planned, Jana had shared the windfall from the sales of the new product. Best of all, with the extra money, he paid off his medical bills. Plus, his wife seemed to be doing better on the new medications.
Thaddeus had located and purchased a vacation chalet in Snow Valley, to serve as their home base. Meanwhile, Jana had planned her wedding, keeping it simple. With Coley’s assistance, she’d bought a wedding dress that looked great on her. The elegant white satin dress fit in all the right places, like it had been designed only for her.
It hadn’t been difficult to decide on a venue. Emerald Bay was the ideal choice. The snow had melted, and the lake was stunning in the bright sunshine. Jana had selected a spot in the state park with the bay as a backdrop. The scene captured the pristine natural beauty of Lake Tahoe. The ceremony had taken place on a scenic lookout point. And Thaddeus looked incredible in his charcoal tuxedo with his long hair pulled back. Jana swore that she’d fallen in love with him all over again.
All their friends and family had attended. And Eva had sat in the front row, dabbing tears from her eyes. At the reception, Thaddeus had danced with Jana. And traditional Icelandic wedding cake, kransakaka, was served to the guests. Later that day, Jana and Thaddeus went with friends to the island for the tour of Vikingsholm Castle.
It had been a beautiful wedding, as romantic as Jana had envisioned. The following day, she left with Thaddeus for a month-long honeymoon in Iceland. She looked forward to seeing the multicolored mountains, the black-sand beaches, and the towering basalt rock formations.
Most of all, Jana looked forward to spending her life with Thaddeus. She gave him a wedding gift of a medallion to wear around his neck. It was engraved with a quote from Audrey Hepburn, one of her favorite movie stars, and conveyed what was in her heart. The delicate script said: The best thing to hold on to in life is each other.
