“Hello?”
“He likes me back,” Holly said.
“You told him?”
“You told me to tell him.”
“I didn’t think you’d actually do it.”
"You know me," Holly said. "And I trust your advice."
“No, you trust Gloria’s advice. You never asked for mine before.”
Holly paused. "Well, that's going to change going forward. Because you give good advice."
“I’m glad he likes you,” Laurel said. “You can tell me all about it when you get home. I’m kind of on a date right now.”
“With the snow globe guy?”
“Yeah, with the snow globe guy.”
Holly knew Laurel was smiling right now. “I’m meeting with him after work. So, I’ll update you then, okay?”
Laurel gave a quick okay, and then the call ended.
Holly tried to get back to work, but she spent the remainder of her shift, freezing while trying to avoid the real snow now gathering on top of the fake snow of the festival. And she was also thinking about what exactly she'd say to Jack after they met up.
She was still thinking about it when she got to the snow angel booth, display. There were four areas for kids to lay down and make snow angels. Any snow angels were now covered by real snow.
Holly looked around. Jack would probably be a while since he had to go around the festival and make sure everything was closed. There was no one around now, either. She had the whole snow angel display to herself. Holly ran up to a fresh pile of mixed real and fake snow and laid down. Her entire back nearly froze.
She sucked in a breath and started to wave her arms and legs against the ground, in an attempt to make her first-ever snow angel. She closed her eyes, hoping she'd feel some holiday spirit fall over her, but she just felt colder.
“You know, this is technically against festival rules. And your uniform’s wet now.”
She opened her eyes; Jack stood over her, a grin on his face.
"You didn't see anything," Holly said. She got up, but too quickly because she slipped back onto the snow again. Thankfully, the thing that was freezing her softened the fall. Jack squatted down and met Holly at eye level.
“You okay?”
“Cold, but yeah.”
He sat down beside Holly. "So, now that we're sure you're okay, what do we do?"
"I mean, you like me, I like you. We're sort of sitting in the snow. Where do we go from here?"
Holly tilted her head, and then without thinking, she leaned in and kissed Jack. It was a peck, but when she pulled back, anyone would've thought they'd done way more.
He bit his bottom lip. “Uh, not exactly what I had in my mind, but we can kiss.”
Holly realized he’d probably meant like they could go on a date or talk things out some more. Not for her to attack him-“
He kissed her back. This time she fell back into the snow, pulling him down with her.
They both pulled away and lay side by side in the snow. "Wait," Holly said. "When did you start liking me?"
“The day I interviewed you,” Jack said. His lips were much redder than they’d been. “I didn’t think I had a chance, though.”
Holly nodded. "Well, just so you know, this is you're only chance, okay?"
Jack kissed her again. “I don’t plan on wasting it, then. So, what are your after Christmas plans?”
Chapter 9
“Woah, you guys don’t look anything alike.”
Holly nodded as snow globe guy, well Kevin, turned from her back to Laurel seated beside him.
"We get that a lot," Laurel said. She pointed to Holly. "She takes more after our dad and older sister. I look like our mom."
“But you guys are twins,” Kevin said.
“Fraternal twins,” Jack chimed in. He took a sip of his hot chocolate. He leaned in toward Holly. “It’d be so much weirder if they were identical.”
"Why?" Holly asked, turning toward him. They were both squeezed into the other side of their booth at Melo's Coffee.
Kevin answered for Jack. "Because then we would both be dating the same girl, and we would know that we find each other girlfriend attractive."
“Okay, this is getting weird,” Holly said. “Let’s move on. So what happened to the snow globe?”
Kevin and Laurel had been in the area after their day-long date, and Holly knew she wouldn't see Jack until after Christmas. She didn't want to stop hanging out with, but she also didn't want to turn down Laurel's invited to get coffee. She just hadn't known it would include Kevin.
He seemed nice and had been more than willing to share the snow globe story.
“We left it there,” Kevin said. “I figured watching the first snowfall in person was way better.” Laurel leaned into him when he said that.
Jack leaned in toward Holly. "We're not going to be as gushy as them, right?"
“No way,” Holly whispered back.
"Good."
