Fire and Steel

I admit openly to literary license in the use of this character, although I believe him capable of acting as I have portrayed him. The real Robert de Belleme was captured after years of vicious raiding in Normandy and spent his final years blinded and castrated, incarcerated in Henry’s dungeons. In my story, I leave it to the reader to decide how my Robert of Belesme ended.
The character of the Conqueror’s youngest son, Henry, is portrayed as realistically as I could make him. He is found variously in this book as King Henry and Duke Henry, used interchangeably after the Battle of Tinchebrai, because many Normans holding lands in both England and Normandy would owe him allegiance in both capacities. To avoid further confusion, he is the only Henry in the book.
