Break-In

The man just looked at Price, as Price raised his gun and, standing up, said, “Mike, I thought you were dead?” But Mike didn’t answer, so Price continued, “Who’s in charge – you or her?”

Again Mike didn’t answer, so Price cocked the trigger on his gun and said, “I don’t have time for this – I want answers?”

“She’s the boss,” said Mike. “She wanted you to think I was dead. The idea was that it would give us an advantage – the element of surprise if you like. Although you almost bumped in to me in Paris – I hadn’t expected you to be there.”

“No,” said Price, “I doubt you did,” as he pulled the trigger on his Smith and Wesson.

The bullet passed straight through Mike’s chest and through the glass door leading to the balcony that, after all the struggling, was now behind him. As Mike staggered backwards from the force of the bullet, the weakened door crashed in to pieces sending glass fragments across the room.

Mike tried to speak but, before he could, Price said, “The thing is Mike – if you’re just hired help, we don’t really need you any more. So I guess this is finally goodbye. I did tell you that you’d pay.” Then he stepped forward and fired three more shots in to Mike’s chest, sending him flying backwards to the edge of the balcony where he briefly balanced precariously before starting to fall over the side.

Price wanted to be sure though – so as Mike’s body tipped backwards, he fired a single shot in to Mike’s head – watching the dark hole appear between his eyes as he fell over the side and four floors down in to the murky water below.

Then, glancing down at the still unconscious Lucy, he casually walked on to the balcony and looked down to watch the dead body slowly submerge.

Turning back to keep an eye on Lucy, Price reached in to the right pocket of his coat, took out his mobile phone and dialled the Chief of Staff, who answered almost immediately with, “What’s up?”

“Call the cleaners – I’ve had a break-in – you’ll never guess who it was.”
