“Vic, look we don't need to discuss so far into the future. I was thinking about within the next year or so. What's that plan?” I asked.

One of his eyebrows lifted and he said, “I am talking about the next year.”

  Oh shit.

“Oh.” I turned my face away from him.

He gently brought it back to look at him.

“Tell me what you're thinking,” Vic said. “I need to know.”

“Honestly, I'm not sure. This, uh, you and I are serious enough. I…well, I’m not sure what to say. I feel like you just kind of proposed.”

I laughed out loud when I thought of how preposterous that sounded.

Vic picked me up off of him, twisted to reach into a drawer and pulled out a box.

  Holy shit.

“Vic,” I breathed, as my heart quickened and my blood pressure spiked.

“This,” he held up the small velveteen black box and said, “Is your engagement ring. I bought it over a month ago.”

  “What?!?” I gasped.

“I'm not going to give it to you just yet because you're not ready for it. I'll try again when you're ready,” He said with a damn straight face.

That is the second time he did that shit to me. Once, when we first met and at that moment. He must have seen the gleam in my eye because when I pounced to tackle his ass, he had moved out of the way to elude me.

“Vic,” I screamed as he scrambled around the bed.

“What?” He was showing all of his teeth with the box in hand. “You think you're ready? Think you can handle me.”

“Keep your ass still and find out,” I said before I lunged again.

“Sweetheart, just admit it. You can't handle me.”

I folded my arms and said, “Think so?”

“Well, I was right the first time. You weren't ready?” Vic recalled.

  Fuck.

  He had to be right.

“Well, Vic. You sort of invaded my life and took over,” I retorted.

“And you let me, sweetheart. Shit, I would do it again.” He smiled and flopped back on the side of bed. “What do you say?”

My bottom hit the mattress but at the foot of the bed and I mused, “Well, if you’re asking me to move in. That answer is yes. If you’re asking me to marry you, well, I’d say you’re probably right, I’m not ready but I know you’ll get me there.”

“That still doesn’t mean, you can’t wear my ring,” Vic countered as I felt his presence behind me on the bed.

He pulled my hair, causing my head to bend backward. Then he kissed me on my lips before he said, “Marry me, Kat. Not today, not in a month, but promise you will. Move in and wear my ring.”

  Shit.

  Who could turn that down?

“Yes, Vic. I promise to marry you.” I smiled.

All of a sudden, he moved me so my back was on the bed and he was straddling me.

“You’ll marry me?” Vic’s face hovered over mine.

“Yes, I’ll marry you.” My hands cupped his face. “I will.”

“Fuck, I don’t deserve you at all but I know it in my gut, you’re only for me.”

“Funny, I have that same feeling. It’s like we’re in sync or something.”

Vic’s face went pale as if he just remembered something. Then he kissed me hard and one thing led to another.

Later that night, Vic and I lay in bed eating ice cream and recovering from our most recent session. Then it occurred to me as I checked my text messages that Ryan and Vic were in cahoots.

“So, it looks like Ryan proposed to D’asia.” I informed Vic.

  “Did he now?”

“You know damn well he did.” I snapped.

Vic laughed and said, “He might have mentioned it. We might have bought our rings at the same place. Mmm, it’s all a blur.”

“Blur, huh?” I shook my head. “At least she’s moving in. That was a struggle.”

“Yeah, seems like her mind was changed about that. You wouldn’t know anything, would you?” Vic asked me.

“Nope, it’s all a blur.” I laughed. “Hey, what’s the deal with you and that guy that’s undercover?”

  “Who, Reggie?” Vic asked.

  “Yeah, that’s him.”

  “What about him?” He asked.

“Are y’all friends? He was at the hospital that day so how undercover is he?” I asked.

“Sweetheart, he’s a friend but he’s really under so I don’t really want to divulge too many details. He has an important job that may be coming to an end soon and that is an entire story for another time.”

  “Well, that’s good.”

“Why do you say that?” Vic turned and raised an eyebrow.

“Well, it’s just that, I want him to have his happily ever after too. Good cops should, you know.”

“Yeah.” He pulled me into him before he kissed my forehead. “I know and if I know Reggie, he will.”

“Well, I can’t wait to hear all about it.” I laughed.

“Yeah, so you’ll have another friend in your crew, huh?”

“Something like that.” I sighed and leaned my head back into Vic’s muscular chest. “I can’t wait.”
