Young Henry: The Rise of Henry VIII Page 46

by Robert Hutchinson

  14. Battle of the Spurs, 1513. A rare taste of military success for Henry, even though it was more of a skirmish than a full-blown battle. This painting was recorded in the Royal Collection during Henry’s reign and portrays English military prowess and glory.

  15. Katherine of Aragon, painted c.1525, by Lucas Horenbout. The Queen was now becoming stout, her short stature emphasising her dumpiness. Regular pregnancies had taken a huge physical toll on her.

  16. Anne Boleyn, painted by an unknown artist in c.1533 – 6. To modern tastes, no great beauty, but her black almond eyes were bewitching – her enemies claimed she was a sorceress who used her evil powers of magic to seduce the King.

  17. Love messages written by Henry and Anne Boleyn during Mass in a Parisian Book of Hours c.1528. Below Christ as ‘the Man of Sorrows’, the King wrote in French: ‘If you remember my love in your prayers as strongly as I worship you, I shall hardly be forgotten, for I am yours. Henry R. Forever’. Anne wrote a couplet in English in reply, artfully using this page with the Annunciation: ‘By daily proof you shall me find/ To be to you both loving and kind’.
