  “What are you going to do today?” Veronica asked.

  Kitty about spit out her bite at the question, unsure how to answer it. Chase Interrupted, “We may rearrange some of the house and we have to go shopping too for some clothes and other items Kitty needs. We can’t have her with only one outfit.”

  “I thought she had clothes at her parents’ house though?” Veronica asked.

  “I do but I may need other things as well. And, I have a present I’m getting for you too. Something you can enjoy tomorrow when we spend the day together.” Kitty said.

  “What is it?” Veronica asked.

  “If she told you it wouldn’t be a surprise!” Chase laughed.

  “Yeah, cool, I get something when I get back from grandma’s house!” Veronica cheered and went back to eating.

  The whole question about what Kitty and her father would be doing today forgotten.

  When they were done eating, Kitty was dragged into Veronica’s room to look at it and see more pictures she had drawn.

  “Veronica you are very talented.” Kitty said.

  “Thank you but I only do it for fun, I still really love the stars and want to be an astronomer.” She said.

  “Good don’t give up your dream, ever.”

  “Is your new dream to make people see that someone who isn’t skinny can still be a model?” Kitty asked.

  Kitty thought about it for a minute, “Yeah I guess that would be my new dream, and I would still love to model. But I’ll have to wait until my leg heals and after the surgery to see how bad the scarring is.”

  “I think you’re still very pretty, even with the scar.” Veronica smiled at her.

  “Thank you sweetheart but I won’t be a draw for many customers at present. However, depending on how well I heal, I may not even need the surgery goes I might be able to get back into the field. But I want to be able to eat and do it. I hadn’t realized just how hungry I’d been all these years.” She admitted.

  “Well daddy will cook anything for you, all you have to do is ask!”

  Chase came into the room, “What are you two doing in here?” He asked.

  “Veronica was showing me her room and more of her art work. Have you seen all of this, she is amazing” Kitty looked up at him.

  “Yeah I know I have a very talented girl.”

  “Mommy tells me that too. You know she really likes you Kitty, she told me so.” Veronica said.

  “I’m glad she likes me, I’m sure I would have really liked her had I met her.” Kitty stated.

  “Yeah I think so too. But that would be awfully hard on daddy to know which of you to love more.”

  “Well I don’t think I would have ever asked him to pick between us.” Kitty commented.

  “I know, I was just saying. I miss my mommy but I think you can be my new mommy one day too. She thinks the same thing as well.” Veronica explained.

  “Sweetie that is something that your daddy will have to decide but I can tell you I like the idea very much.”

  “Me too.”

  Chase looked at his watch, “Hey munchkin, I should get you over to your grandma’s. Are you almost ready?” He asked. “Kitty you can stay here or go along, it’s up to you.”

  “Well as much as I enjoy hobbling to the car and trying to get in, I think I’ll stay for now. I’m going to try and think of how I can talk to Robert and see what I can find out from him.” Kitty said.

  Veronica gave her a hug and kissed her on the burnt cheek. “That’s so it heals better.”

  Kitty smiled at her and thought if it was only that easy. Chase pulled her into his arms and kissed her goodbye, “I’ll be back in just a little bit. We’ll go shopping for that gift a little later.” He smiled at her.

  Kitty sat down and wrote down the names of some of her model friends she planned on contacting about the standards in the field. She hoped they would be on board with the ideas, and made a list of what she thought should be changed.

  To bring about a change in the modeling industry. We should not be selling the thought to young girls and women that they need to weigh under 150 pounds to be attractive. As an industry, the fashion world needs to show greater recognition of how they represent the ideal female form and the harm it can cause to women who chase after an impossible ideal.

  As members of this industry we should express our support of the idea that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Imagine that you have a daughter, who isn’t small, and likes to eat. Are you going to make her starve just so she is skinny and accepted by other people?

  Kitty liked this question, hoping it would make people think. Some of these models were so used to having to starve that they may think it was normal by now, and they may not be swayed easily.

  She thought for a few more minutes, trying to think of what else she could put down.

  Her mind turned towards contacting Robert and finding out more about Steve. She picked up her cell phone, looking for Robert’s number.

  She had never called him in the past but she clicked the dial button and held her breath. Praying that he would pick up his own phone and it wouldn’t be answered by her mother. She was still too far hurt to talk to her right now.

  “Hello.” Robert’s voice came over the line.

  She let out a breath she hadn’t realized she had been holding. “Robert, it is Kitty. Don’t let my mom know I’m on the phone.”

  “Why did you call me?” He asked.

  “I want to know what my real father’s name is, do you know it.” Kitty asked.

  “Hold on a minute.” He sounded like he was walking out of the house. “Okay now I can talk.”

  “My real father, what is his name, do you know it?” Kitty asked again.

  “Look I’m really sorry I was always so bad to you all those years. I know it was wrong to do but it was hard looking at you and knowing you weren’t my flesh and blood. I almost left your mother when I first found out, and maybe I should have. But I think if I wasn’t around she would have been even more abusive to you.” He explained.

  “Robert, I don’t really want to rehash all of this right now. I’m not mad at you but what my mother said, I don’t know if I could ever forgive her for.” Kitty said.

  “I know, I saw a completely different woman that day. I mean she had said she didn’t want you before but never sounding so serious.” He commented.

  “His name? Do you know it?” Kitty tried to get the answer once more.

  “Yeah, I do, it’s Steve Bartkowski, should be fairly easy to find. Good luck Kitty.”

  “One more thing before you hang up.”

  “Yeah what is it?” Robert asked.

  “Can you pack up my clothes that are left there and ship them to me? Or did she throw them all away?” Kitty asked.

  “I think there are a few things left, I can ship them to you. What is the address?” Robert asked.

  She gave him Chase’s address, “Thank you Robert.”

  “You’re welcome Kitty. Again, I’m sorry but in my own way

  Kitty felt the tears running down her face. “I gotta go Robert, thank you.”

  “Sure, call anytime you need something.”

  Kitty hung up confused by how nice Robert had been on the phone. She wondered why he had never been that nice to her all these years. But in one thought she knew, her mother had always worn the pants in the family.

  She heard Chase come in the door and wiped her eyes.

  “Hey, I missed you.” He came up to her and hugged and kissed her. He looked into her eyes and saw the sadness, “What’s wrong?” He asked. His stomach falling thinking she had changed her mind about moving in or something.

  “I called Robert and talked to him. He was far too nice to me, I’m not used to it. But I do have the name of my real father. Not only that but Robert will pack up the few clothes that are left there and ship them.”

  Chase smiled, “Oh, I really thought you were going to tell me you didn’t want to move in after all.”

  She laughed, “No, you’re stuck with me now.”

  “I’m not stuck with you, I want you here.”

  “Okay, are you sure? I don’t want you doing this just because Veronica wants me here.”

  “She may be a little bossy girl at times but she still knows I’m the parent. I would never ask you to move in unless I was ready for that step.” He pulled her to him and hugged her. “I missed holding you last night and thought how nice it would be to make love to you at night and first thing in the morning, or just to hold you and sleep.” Chase commented.
