I'd mentioned my niece before, but only in passing. I'd never expected him to actually listen, to really care.

"You deserve to be happy and I'd do anything to be the one to bring you that happiness."

I shook my head. My life had never been about what I deserved, but what I was willing to take and how that would affect everyone else. "I don't deserve anything from you."

  "Look at me."

"Don't... please," I said, fighting the threat of tears.

"Look at me," he said again and knelt down in front of me so I couldn't look away. "You're beautiful. There's no denying that. But you're so much more than a pretty face. You're caring, self-sacrificing. You're everything I have ever wanted, and I adore you. Do you hear me? I love you."

I stared into his warm brown eyes for a long moment, beyond words.

He looked away, sighed. His voice dropped an octave. "I know that might not mean much to you..."

"No... It means everything," I said as I took his face in my hands and kissed him gently.
