“Brenda?” Gloria asked. I had become lost in my thoughts.

  “Sorry, Gloria. I...I...,” I stammered.

“If it’s pay or benefits you’re worried about, I can offer you generous terms,” Gloria told me. I didn’t care about money or benefits. I suddenly knew that there was nothing she could offer me that could compare to what I’d found here. Hell, I never liked Seattle all that much anyway. I was surprised that I no longer wanted to leave. In fact, I couldn’t see ever leaving Wyoming now. I had learned a lot about myself here. I learned I liked Avery not despite his attitude problem but because of it, that I loved being naughty with him too. I also learned that I was falling in love with him.

“Gloria, I really appreciate the offer but I think I’m going to stay on here at the ranch,” I told her and it felt right to say so.

“Oh...well, then. If you change your mind, give me a call,” Gloria replied, the shock and confusion evident in her voice. I thanked her again and told her goodbye. I wouldn’t be calling her again. I hung up and reclined in the office chair. I smiled despite myself. I’d never have imagined that I’d want to stay here but I did more than anything. Gloria could have offered me a million dollars and it wouldn’t have mattered.

I had a job and I loved it. The pay couldn’t compare to what Gloria would have offered but the benefits here were far better. I felt like I was making a difference around here. The ranch was being run smoothly and the boys had a woman around to take care of them. I had found a good friend in Deb. Most importantly, I had a cowboy all my own to play with. Damn, I had the best job in the whole world.

  The Future of Cameron Publishing

I’ve had a good run writing romance. I’ve made no secret that D. H. Cameron is a pen name. Prior to my stint in romance, I had several other pen names under which I wrote erotica. Currently, I write so-called “mainstream” fiction under my real name. For personal reasons I do not reveal my real name here.

I have decided to concentrate on my “mainstream” fiction and because of that, I almost quit writing romance. While editing and rewriting Curves on the Range, however, I discovered I missed it. Maybe it’s the familiarity with the subject, just the freedom it affords me to explore my own desires and fantasies or even the ability to live vicariously through my characters. In any case, I am going to continue writing as D. H. Cameron.

Things will change, however. I’m going to begin writing shorter stories. I began back in 2012 writing Rock Hard Love, a 30,000 word story. It nearly killed me. I have the attention span of a...oh, something shiny! LOL! Next up, I wrote Softail Curves and that came in at around 13,000 words. A bit short but more my style. I prefer shorter works with a tighter narrative that keeps the story moving at a quick pace. I know some authors and readers enjoy detailed exposition and characterization but that’s not me.

I’m also going to explore some different subjects. I’m going to attempt some sweet romances. Oh, they’ll have an edge and some torrid sex but not a ton of angst or conflict. Just a good story for a rainy afternoon or for when you’re stuck waiting at the airport. There will be big girls (I won’t abandon BBW heroines...they’re so much fun!) and hot guys but the stories will be light, fun and sexy.

Next up, I’ll be exploring more action-oriented stories. Romance will share the stage with action, adventure, suspense, mystery and intrigue. Consider them pulp novels for women or pulp romance. They will likely be presented in a serial format and priced right. Expect the same strong heroines and unconventional heroes along with exotic and historical locations. I think you’ll find these serials to be a refreshing chance from the glut of billionaires, shifters and bikers...well, maybe not bikers.
