  Chapter One

  Year: 2001

I’M ABOUT TO piss my pants after chugging that beer.

It’s a regular Tuesday night, nothing out of the ordinary. I should be studying instead of guzzling a fucking pint of booze. Joel is the only explanation for this. It’s about a month into the fall semester of our junior year at college. I look out the window and notice some of the leaves are starting to change colors.

“Dude, you study too much.” Joel grins across from me at the table but his stare moves beyond me. “Target acquired.”

He has that look on his face, like he just spotted his conquest for the evening. This fucking guy. He’s a great friend but I’ll be damned if pussy doesn’t have a stranglehold on his brain. He’s constantly hornier than a gaggle of teens at an N’Sync concert. It doesn’t help that every chick on campus drools at his light brown hair, green eyes—and let’s not forget his abs. Fucker takes his shirt off every chance he gets.

“Guess I’ll grab the tab.” I shake my head in derision but I’m halfway teasing.

“What? Why?” It’s like his fucking brain shorts out when a hot chick walks into the room.

“Because you have the I’m going to get my dick wet look in your eye.” I glance back toward the entrance of the pub to see who the lucky girl is this time. It’s the sexy-as-all-balls nerdy chick from my C++ programming class.

“I won’t bail on you if you don’t want me to.”

“No, go ahead. I have work to do anyway.” I slap my hand against my new laptop. The college just got cutting edge new tech called Wi-Fi that I’m itching to try out in the library.

Joel struts over toward geek girl’s table. I didn’t catch her name the first day of class because I was a few minutes late. She wore a Galaga shirt and I’d nearly shit my Huggies when I saw it. I remember vividly in my mind seeing her for the first time. Her hair was jet-black with streaks of maroon and bright purple running through it.

I start packing up my laptop into my Star Wars backpack—Star Wars for obvious reasons. Once secure, I turn around and Joel is walking back over. Shocked would be an understatement to describe his features—it’s more like dejected. He shakes his head and talks to himself silently.

I can’t help but chuckle. “What is it?”

“She’s not interested.” He says this as though the earth has stopped rotating on its axis.

In a way it has. Joel doesn’t get shut down. If he wants to fuck a girl, it’s pretty much guaranteed to happen if she’s single—or even if she isn’t.

“Oh no, what ever will you do tonight?” I mock him.

He glares up at me. “How the fuck did that just happen?”

I can’t tell if he’s joking or serious. “Are you all current on your testing?”

He stares lasers this time and chides me with a high-pitched voice. “You all current on your testing?”

“Maybe she’s heard the rumors of the panty whisperer.” I make air quotes when I say whisperer.

“That nickname is lame. I prefer golden-tongued Adonis.”

We both get a laugh out of that one. He glances down at my bag. “Where you going?”

“I told you I have to study.”

“Study. Study. Study. You need to drink with me.” He pats the bar stool I was just sitting at.

“I can’t fuck this semester up. My family will give me shit for days.”

“You need to do what you want. That’s what college is all about. All these women looking for an experience. It’s why we pay tuition.”

“Mom would beat the tits right off you if she heard you say that.” I look him in the eye when I say it.

Sure, he may be right about doing what I want. Programming computers is for the fucking birds. But my family is full of intelligent weirdos and it’s just what we do. Everyone in my family programs computers.

He mocks me again. “Mom isn’t here right now, is she?”

I keep staring over at the girl. She’s so animated, and the way she bites her lip is sexy as fuck. She’d make a perfect Padme to my Annakin for Halloween.

“Why don’t you make a run at it?” Joel scoffs when he says it.

“No time for distractions. Besides, if the whisperer can’t get in there—nobody can.”

“Word!” He holds up his beer and toasts an invisible one that I’m no longer drinking.

“Gotta go work on my app. I’ll see you tomorrow?”

“Yep.” His eyes roll over to a table with three hot blonde coeds sitting there. “Besides—” He looks down to his beer and back at them. “I might be seeing double and sleeping triple before the night’s up.”

I toss him a fist bump. “Bet.”

  Chapter Two

IT’S BEEN ABOUT a week since I saw the mystery Galaga girl at the bar shoot Joel down in all his glory. He hadn’t missed a beat, though. When I’d come home from the library—after using their Wi-Fi, which was dope as fuck—all three girls from the bar were asleep in his bed with him. I just shook my head. What else could you do?

I walk into the campus coffee shop to get some code written. The sound of the big stainless steel machines and smell of coffee helps me out when it’s early—early meaning any time before noon.

I sit down and open up my laptop. It has a big sticker on it that reads “#1 Dad” with a picture of the Dark Lord himself, Darth Vader.

  “Love your sticker.”

I peer up over the top of my computer and there she is, Galaga girl. Her hair is all maroon now and she’s wearing an R2D2 shirt that clings tight to her curves. Her tits are average size—high and firm—and she’s tall and lean.

“Thanks! I think we have the same class—”

“C++.” She nods her head and sits down across from me.

My heart races when I see her up close. I shut the lid on my laptop and stare into a pair of smoky gray eyes and pert lips.

  “Yep, that’s the one.”

“Are you almost done with your app?”

  “No.”

She chuckles. Her laugh is adorable and I can’t stop staring at her soft lips.
“Isn’t it due tomorrow?”

  “Yep.” I grin.

“I’m CC by the way.” She holds out her hand.

I reach out and take it in mine. Her soft skin, her touch—shocks of electricity jolt into Tommy Junior down in my pants and he threatens to make an appearance. I pretend I have telekinetic powers and will him to behave with my mind.

“Tommy. Everyone calls me Tommy. Except Mom of course, who isn’t actually my mom in the biological sense. She calls me Thomas. I’m rambling. Just tell me to shut up.”

She halfway chuckles. “Thomas.” She nods like she’s thinking my name through. CC is cute as fuck when she nods. “I like Thomas.”

“What’s CC stand for?” I realize I’m still holding her hand so I release it. Can’t have her thinking I’m a Creepy McCreeperson.

“Crystal Castles Clark.” She looks away as if she’s ashamed.

“No shit. Like the Atari game?”

She whips around and her eyes light up. “Yes! It’s what I’m named after. My parents are kind of gamer nerds.”

“Tell me about it. My whole family is too.”

“So what did you mean your mom that isn’t your mom?”

  “Oh, it’s my buddy’s, umm—”

She cuts me off. “The guy from the other night?”

I toss her a nod but my face heats up a little. For some reason, it bothers me that CC and I seem to have a connection and now she’ll always be the girl that Joel hit on first. There’s something about her though. Her pale skin and gorgeous face and love of video games—I should be nervous. But the way she talks, the way our conversation flows with such little effort—it sets me at ease, and I feel more like myself.

  “That’s the one.”

“He’s cute, just not my type.”

I grip the edge of the table when she says Joel is cute. I’ll always be in that guy’s shadow. It’s fine. I’m not ugly by any means, but when everyone thinks your best friend is Brad Pitt, you’re kind of relegated to the B-list.

She must sense my frustration because she changes the subject. “So, what’s your app?”

“Web crawler. It searches for documents on the internet based on search terms. Nothing too cutting edge.” I grin slyly.

“So it helps students find other people’s papers to use?” She folds her small arms across her chest. It pushes her tits up higher and R2 tightens across them. I’ve never found a droid hot as balls until this very second. Fuck you, R2! Get off my tits.

“I mean—umm—I suppose one could use it for that reason. If they were so inclined.”

She chuckles. “You’re bad. Binary bad boy. That’s what people should call you.”

I make a grimacing face that probably looks like I’m trying to pinch off a turtle head. “I like it. Because I am, umm, yeah—very bad.”

  You’re so fucking lame, Dude.

It’s whatevs. She laughs, so I feel pretty damn good about it myself. My confidence kicks up to an all-time high. “We should get coffee sometime. Without the computers and school talk.”

She regards me for a few seconds, so long I start to think I said the dumbest thing ever. But then she smiles, slowly. “Yeah, I’d like that.”

Score! I do the fucking Macarena in my mind and then quickly bitch-slap my brain for the disturbing image it produces.

CC walks to the counter for something. I’m assuming she’s ordering coffee. She returns and looms over me at my side before setting a post-it down on the table. “I have to run. But call me.”

Once she’s through the door and around the corner of the building, I jump up out of my seat. “Woo!” I holler and my voice echoes off the walls. People turn and stare. “Got them digits, Son!” I shake the post-it note in the air.

The barista lady shakes her head and smiles. I do the little N’Sync dance holding CC’s note out in front of me and move my arm around the room, singing like I’m a one-man boy band. “Ain’t no lie. Tommy might, might die!”

I quickly sit back down to all the stares. How the hell am I supposed to concentrate on programming this app now, when all I can think about is sticking my face on some R2D2 titties? I’m so fucked.

  Chapter Three

A FEW DAYS later she walks into the coffee shop for our date, and my heart nearly stops beating. Fuck, she’s perfect. I look down at my shirt. I went off the Star Wars script and wore a Lord of the Rings shirt. It has Legolas really big, shooting his bow and arrow on the front.

I drink her in, looking her up and down from head to toe. CC has on knee-high black leather boots, some kind of fishnet stockings, and a black skirt paired with a tight Darth Vader tee that says The Dark Lord across the top.

It may just be the sexiest fucking thing I’ve ever seen. I swear she changes her hair color every other day too, because this time it’s all jet-black, but it has some Boba-Fett-colored green streaks in it. They wouldn’t be so noticeable if I wasn’t searching every last detail of her.

  “Hey!” she says.

  “Hi!”

“Oh my God, I can’t wait for that movie to come out.” She points at my shirt.

I do my best Han voice. “I know.”

She laughs. “Nice one, Solo. Did you finish your app?”

“I did. I did indeed, mah lady.” What the fuck is wrong with me? I do the lamest shit sometimes. “Should we get some coffee?” I motion over to the counter and she nods.

Her face tinges with the slightest shade of pink. I’m a pretty observant fella and usually that means someone is nervous. What does she have to be nervous about? I’m the one on the verge of some half-moon pit stains looking like the aftermath of Luke blasting the Death Star. She’s the hot one here.

We walk over to the counter and she orders a white chocolate mocha with an extra shot of espresso. I get the same because my brain can’t function enough to order something different. CC has a way of making my thoughts just fucking stop. My mind shorts out and they get lost along the way. I think of something awesome or funny to tell her and the next second it’s blinked from existence.

We grab our coffees and sit down. I want to know everything about her.

“So, are you from around here?” she asks.

“Kind of. We grew up about an hour from here.”

  “We?”

Fuck my goat ass. I swear it’s like Joel is my Siamese twin sometimes. It’s always been this way. We’re like a team. But I don’t want to bring him up on a date. Sure, maybe she shot him down the first time, but he’s always there when it comes to chicks. My mind knows he’d never try anything with a girl I was into, but still—he doesn’t need any extra attention with the ladies.

  “Joel. My friend from—”

“Oh. Well, I love it here.” She changes the subject as if she can sense my apprehension. I like that about her already.

  “Are you from here?”

“No. I’m from the Bay Area.”

  “Oh, wow. Silicon Valley?”

She does the snap and point and wink thing at me like, bingo.

“And you’re a Comp Sci major?”

  She looks away. Interesting.

“That’s the plan,” she says, like she’s rehearsed that phrase a hundred times. I can relate.

“Doesn’t sound like it’s your plan,” I note.

Her eyes dart back to mine. “I’m not sure if I like how observant you are.”

I shrug. “I can be, umm, less observant if you want?”

She laughs. “I like you, Thomas.”

  “I like you too, Crystal.”

We gaze at each other for a brief second. I don’t push the issue on what she wants to be when she grows up. The last thing I want to do is try and bulldoze some walls she’s obviously put up. I’ll lower the draw bridge and cross the moat to her heart at just the right pace, Tommy-style.

She surprises me and lowers the bridge herself. “I don’t like programming software.”

I let out a huge sigh. “Thank ya, Jaysus.”

  She bursts int
o laughter. “What?” She’s covering her mouth and her face is pink. Her cute little nose crinkles along the bridge.

“I mean, I’m just gonna lay this all out there.” I bug my eyes out. “I fucking hate C++.”

She nods, still laughing hysterically. “Yes! C++ can suck Javas dick.”

I stop laughing and give her a stern look, bugging my eyes out wider. “What do you have against Java?”

She freezes up and turns pale. “Wait, what? I’m sor—”

My face starts to tremble and a laugh builds in my cheeks.

“You are such a dick!” She starts to shove me in a playful way and my hand instinctively catches her wrist.

I hold it for a second.

  Then another.

Her eyelashes flutter and my dick is stiffer than a quadruple Jack and Coke. Standing is definitely not an option at this point. I release her wrist—slowly—letting her hand slide down my fingers. Her eyelids are half hooded.

“I like you.” I don’t know where those words came from, and I immediately want to bitch-slap them for coming out of my mouth so soon. “Like, I mean, I like you, like you.”

CC’s eyes slowly open back up to me. “I like you, like you, too.”

  Goddamn, this girl is everything.

  “How’s your coffee?”

She pauses and takes me in for another second, like the hamster wheels are spinning in her head. “You know how they say you can’t truly generate a real random number? In coding?”

I have no idea where this is going. She’s still a mystery, just like the first time I saw her. “Sure. Sure.”

“They should just wire into your brain to generate random numbers.”

  “Umm, thank you?”

She leans in closer, close enough that I can kiss her if I want. I think it’s what she wants. Maybe? She did say she liked me. I can always tell what someone wants just by watching them, but for some reason once feelings get involved I turn into Doubting Thomas the Pussy Willow from a small town up the road.

She nods her head. “Definitely a compliment. I like it about you. When you say random things.”
