Look Me in The Eyes (Keeping an Eye on Her Book 2)

As Lampard stepped back out of their way, Martinez could hear Nicole speak to her. “I was calling you all day, why didn’t you pick up?”
Martinez was instantly annoyed at the tone Nicole took with Lampard, as if she owned her.
“I was busy,” Lampard responded and walked out of the room, brushing pass Martinez as if she was not even there. Nicole followed her and Martinez decided that she would let them go.
“I see you have fully recovered,” Sharon said coming in as Lampard and Nicole walked out. She looked at the medical examiner who looked like someone had forcefully dragged her out of bed, but sexy nonetheless.
She smiled, “I don’t think I have ever seen you look this dishevelled.”
“Yeah, well I sleep too and since you had me up all of last night, it was an early night for me.”
The bantered back and forth as Martinez watched her work. For a moment Martinez almost forgot that Lampard was about until she felt her eyes piercing her from a distance. She turned her head to see Lampard staring at her and it was anger and jealousy that was written across her face.
As Martinez got up to go to her, Lampard turned and exited the room as Nicole took her hand and they left the house together. Martinez felt discarded as she watched them both drive off in Lampard’s car.
She didn’t even check if I had another ride to get home, Martinez thought, a bit flabbergasted at what Lampard had just done.
She decided not to put too much thought into it and instead asked the chief to have one of the police cruisers take her to where her car was parked. She had glued and extra key to the undercarriage for emergencies. As she drove home she smiled at the memory of the evening she had just spent with Lampard and decided that she was not going to let anything spoil her evening.
She chose to believe that Lampard was sorting her baggage out and they would see where they stood in the morning. She hoped they would be good because she was tired of the fighting and avoiding.
* * *
She got into work in the mid morning after stopping at the hospital to have her bandage changed. Lampard was nowhere to be seen, and she figured that was expected the killer had been killed; her expertise was no longer needed for the moment.
Martinez called her and when she didn’t pick up she figured she would call back when she saw the missed call. She was worried something might have happened to her, but decided to give her some more time.
“Martinez!” the chief called her into her office and handed her a stack of files. “It’s time to fill Connelly’s spot on the task force. I figured you should get the honour of selecting someone.”
Martinez took the files in silence and left his office. She wasn’t sure she was ready for that yet, and decided to take Sharon up on the tea she had called offering earlier. She could use a distraction, and so she made her way down to the morgue.
“I really enjoyed our movie night,” Sharon said to her handing her a cup of tea. “You should come over some time.”
Martinez smiled in agreement and before she could stop her Sharon stepped up to her and kissed her. Some part of her brain kept telling her to stop but her body was reliving the night at the hospital, and the years she had lusted after the medical examiner. Her hands came up to the small of the woman’s back as their kiss deepened.
When they pulled away, they both smiled and Martinez excused herself before she got into a predicament she couldn’t get out of.
“So that’s who you want now?” Lampard asked from the bench across from the doorway to the morgue. “You both would make a cute couple.”
Martinez could not respond as she stared in shocked realization that she might have just destroyed the one thing she was sure she wanted.
“I’m sorry-,”
“No, don’t apologize. You are allowed to kiss whoever you want to,” Lampard said and walked away. Martinez had déjà vu as they entered the underground parking lot and she tried to get Lampard to listen to her.
“I need some time away from you,” Lampard said. “I brought you lunch, you should go eat.”
“How long are we talking about?”
Lampard didn’t answer she simply got in her car and drove away.
“I really hate this damn parking lot,” Martinez said out loud, while she watched Lampard drive away from her. She would give her some time, but she had no intentions of letting Lampard get used to her absence.
