Let Me Heal Your Heart

“Go ahead, it’s ok,” I said stroking her hair, nervous now.

  “I’ve been looking for my—”

  “Locket?”

When she nodded, tears in her eyes, I grabbed her and held her close to me. “I’m so sorry, Anna. I wanted it to be a surprise. I took it.” I released her slowly, just in case she was feeling the need to beat me up. She was smiling when I looked down at her face, thank God. I reached over and grabbed my shorts from the floor and dug the box out of my pocket. “I wanted to give it to you tomorrow with your other present but…happy graduation, Anna. I’m so proud of you and I love you.”

She sat up then. The view of her breasts and the way her long hair hung in waves, resting right along those sweet, beautiful, rosy nipples that I loved so much, had me thinking about other things besides the box she was now anxiously waiting for me to hand over. “Anna, you’ve got to put a shirt on or else I’m putting those babies right back into my mouth.”

She dug a tank and her underwear from between the sheets and shimmied back into them. “Hand it over, Banks,” she said, giggling.

She caressed the surface of it again, like the first time I’d given it to her, and then she popped the latch. I had put another picture in it. It was one of us together at Martha’s Vineyard last summer. Anna in her bikini, me standing behind her, hugging her close to me. When I saw the picture it reminded me of those happy, goofy grins we were wearing in the original picture. It was six years later but we still looked as happy to be with each other now as we had been then. I knew I was happier now than I had ever been in my life. Being with Anna just made my life…great.

“Turn it over, Anna.” The words I’d had engraved on the back were meant to let her know what I felt about her, what I wanted for our future.

I had considered getting her the diamond ring right now. Anna, though, had not-so-subtly dropped a couple of wisecracks about not wanting to be her version of a “hillbilly bride,” married and pregnant right out of college. That was ok with me. I could wait for as long as she needed. When she did finally start to drop hints in the other direction, though, I’d be in Tiffany’s with Fiona, picking out the ring faster than she could blink.

I knew what I wanted. I wanted Anna, I wanted a home with Anna in it, and I wanted children—lots of them.

Anna and I would raise our family with love.

I watched her as she turned it over and read the words. She looked up at me, held my gaze and nodded as tears pricked at the corners of her eyes.

  First love

  True love

  Forever love

  THE END

  …for now
