A Ghostly Charm

“I was wrong,” she said.
He drew back, eyebrows lifting, as if he understood the significance of those words, words she never said.
“I was wrong to think it wouldn’t change me. I was wrong to think you didn’t change me. And you know what? I like the person I’ve become. I feel like I can do anything. I feel like I can be anything.”
His expression shifted toward wary, and he drew back just a little. “So what are you going to be?”
She handed him the copy of the magazine, hot off the press with McDavid Island right on the cover. “I’m going to be an adventure writer. I’d hoped you’d be part of my adventure.”
His shoulders eased, but his expression still didn’t soften enough to give her hope. “You walked away.”
“I know.”
“You said there was nothing between us.”
“I know. I lied.”
“You were gone two months.”
“I felt like I needed to be sure. And I had some things to clear up. How many times do I have to say I was wrong?”
“Maybe a couple more.” A smile played at the corner of his full lips. “What things did you have to take care of?”
Finally the tightness in her chest began to ease, a frisson of relief running through her. “Making arrangements to rent out my house and researching available housing here.”
“Here?” he repeated. “On McDavid Island?”
“Turns out Cindi has a room over her garage available.” She tilted her head playfully when his eyebrows shot so high she thought his eyes would pop out.
“Hell, no. We’ll find you a nice neutral place, and we’ll start this from the beginning.” He folded his arms around her and brought her to his chest. “I’ll show you a whole other kind of adventure. You in?”
“I’m in.”
And she melted into the kiss, knowing with Mal, there would never be a dull moment.
