Scarcely ten minutes later his alarm clock started blaring and he groaned louder pulling his pillow up and over his head. Moments later his mother poked her nose in his room, sighing at the blaring alarm clock and the lump in the blankets that was Jacob attempting to go back to sleep. She walked over to the side table and shut the alarm off before turning and putting her hands on her hips staring down at her son. Finally, she grabbed the edge of the blanket and flung it to the bottom of the bed, causing Jacob to moan and hold the pillow down on his head harder.
“Jacob Michael Russell, you get your arse out of bed and get ready for school right now!”
Jacob moaned in response, groping behind him for the blankets down at his ankles before lifting his head from under the pillow to actually see it was down at his ankles. He turned his head to look up at his mother, eyeing her for a moment before sighing. “Fine… I’ll get up. Little privacy?”
Jacob often slept in only his boxers and the previous evening was no exception, as he spoke he sat up and swung his legs out of bed to grab a pair of jeans from the floor. Katherine rolled her eyes at her son and moved to walk out of the room and as she paused in the doorway he was just picking the jeans up off the floor.
“Just hurry your butt up...and put on some clean jeans for heaven's sake…”
With that, she pulled the door closed and Jacob was left holding the pair of jeans in his hands. After raising them to give them a sniff he shrugged and rolled his eyes before tossing them roughly in the direction of his laundry hamper. After pulling a clean pair more-or-less from his dresser drawer, he tugged them on and selected a T-shirt bearing some sort of band name scrawled across it and tugged it over his messy hair.
After making a trip to the bathroom to wash his face and make a half-hearted attempt at combing his hair out, he made his way down to the kitchen.

Jacob was soon hurrying down the stairs, dressed and reasonably clean. Seeing that his father was placing a stack of pancakes on a serving platter in the middle of the table he moved directly to the table to sit down. “Looks good pop- I mean dad.” He corrected himself upon a look from his father, Alan, and grinned as he helped himself to three pancakes. Even for a teenager who was constantly hungry, Jacob felt oddly famished - and he’d had a large supper the last couple of nights. Even as he squirted liberal amounts of syrup on his pancakes and then used his fork to cut off a stack and shove it in his mouth his parents were watching him astonished. When he realized they were watching him he moved to chew his mouthful and swallow quickly. Once he had finished swallowing the last piece of food, he looked at them incredulously, “What? I get something on my face?” He wiped at his cheek with the back of his hand before looking at each of his parents. Their eyebrows were raised and they had a confused look on their faces.
Finally, his mother cleared her throat, “No, no, it’s not that. It’s just that I have never seen you eat even that much food in one sitting. Are you feeling okay? The doctors did say there could be residual effects.”
Jacob shrugged as he picked his fork back up and prepared to eat, “I’m fine. I feel amazing.” With that, he returned to his plate and had soon polished off all three large pancakes and was standing up. “So, anyways. I should get off to school then I suppose.”
Nodding, his father stood as Jacob stood, “Yes, indeed, have a good day of classes, my boy.”
Jacob nodded as he picked up his abandoned backpack from near the door and stuffed his feet in shoes, “See ya, Dad. Mom.” With that, he turned on his heels and yanked the door open before disappearing out of it and causing it to bounce in the frame slightly.
Chapter 4: Being Bullied
His walk to school that day was fairly uneventful: it was as he walked towards his locker that he started to get the stares. He could feel the eyes on his back as he spun the combination dial and clicked the lock open before yanking the sticky door open. As he opened his locker was when he happened to look up and see Tyler and his friends standing at the other end of the hall staring at him. Stuffing his bag in the packed locker he tugged his AP Geometry book out and firmly closed it and locked it. As he turned to head to his class he gave Tyler a little wave and smile that could be mistaken for a smirk if you looked a certain way and turned on his heel to disappear into the crowd of students heading to class.
He must have spooked Tyler because Jacob didn’t see hide nor hair of him for the rest of the day. Even at lunch from his usual spot off in the corner he couldn't locate the boy who’d been his nemesis since high school began.
For the rest of the day, Jacob enjoyed not being pushed into a locker or shoved into closets. However, it wasn’t to last because by the time he came to school on Tuesday morning Tyler must have gotten over himself because he had only just opened his locker when suddenly his head was shoved inside of it and held there, a growling voice in his ear.
“Hey, Loser. How ya feelin’? Feel up to getting pummelled today? Because that’s what I’m going to do to you after you ratted me out over that little prank on the school trip.”
Suddenly filled with rage over Tyler’s dismissal of the seriousness of what he’d done, how he could have been killed, Jacob snapped. However, before he could actually leverage his hands onto the lockers to force his head back and away from Tyler's hand - suddenly it was no longer there. When Jacob turned around it was to see Tyler laying on the floor and a trash can overturned next to him. Curiously, when Jacob’s eyes found the can he saw a large dent that seemed incredibly fist-like in the hard plastic.
The scene puzzled Jacob and as Ms. Hinkle, the English teacher, helped pick Tyler up off the floor, Jacob stood there dumbfounded. He knew he hadn’t forced his head backward, so how had Tyler ended up across the hallway on the floor. Staring down at his hands, he could have sworn he saw the last vestiges of a glow fading from them. Shaking his head, however, he scolded himself, quit that Jacob, you’re seeing things - nothing bad happened to you down there. Tyler probably just leaned backward and then lost his balance like the over-sized ape that he is, it’s nothing.
But it wasn't nothing. Something had indeed happened to Jacob down in those tunnels for all those hours that night. Something had changed inside of him - given him something special and unique. For the rest of the day he was distracted by his own thoughts as he tried to make whatever had happened to Tyler happen again. He forgot all about his plan to get transferred to TCA as he focused trying to make small things fly away from him.
He finally managed to send an open pudding cup flying during lunch hour, however, as he stared in surprise he was suddenly overshadowed by three large figures. Looking slowly up he saw that there was pudding splattered across and dripping from Tyler’s face.
“Alright see here, Runt. I don’t know what the hell happened out in the hallway there, but no way am I standing for people throwing pudding cups at me ya hear?!”
Tyler was leaning over Jacob in a manner obviously meant to be imposing and threatening. Cockily, Jacob leaned backward in his chair and crossed his arms across his chest. “How the hell did I throw that on you from all the way across the cafeteria? Seriously, are you that thick?” That did it, Tyler snapped and lunged across the table at Jacob. Eyes widening Jacob toppled backward out of his seat in his attempt to get away and smashed his elbow into the ground hard as Tyler wrapped his thick hand around his other wrist and dragged him upright. “I’ll pound you flat you little worm!” He growled as he held Jacob by his T-shirt.
Mr. Anderson had just begun to make his way through the crowd of students and chairs when after two quietly spoken words, “Wanna bet!” from Jacob suddenly Tyler was sent flying for the second time that day through the crowd of students. Jacob’s hands never left his side as they were balled into fists.
After Tyler went flying, Jacob’s eyes flew open wide at what he had just done. Everyone else was clapping him on the back, thinking he had just pushed him off of him. In reality, his hands had never moved and it was a fit of anger that had
sent Tyler careening backward - knocking over Mr. Anderson as he had moved towards the two of them. As he was clapped on the back, Jacob looked down at his hands again and was certain his skin was faintly glowing for a moment.
What the hell is happening to me? He thought to himself as he sank back down in his chair and Mr. Anderson approached the table.
The other students must have anticipated this for before the teacher or Jacob could say a word, several of those still lingering had jumped up to defend Jacob. Jacob rolled his eyes as he slid backward in his chair to slouch. Once Mr. Anderson had cleared the other students out of the way, he approached and leaned on the table.
“Hello, Mr. Russell. Been fighting on your first day back, have we?” The look he gave Jacob was one of disapproving of such action and Jacob had to fight not to roll his eyes and to keep his voice even in his response.
“Actually, sir, it’s more like defending myself. First, he shoves my head inside my locker and now he grabs me by my shirt? I do believe I have the right to one shove to get him off of me… Sir.” He added the last ‘sir’ with a bit of venom, but he despised being reprimanded for defending himself.
“That was quite a shove. You sure it wasn't more than one?”
Jacob couldn't help but glare up at the science teacher now. “Actually, yes I'm sure. I pushed him once and he just flew backward. Not my fault I don't know my own strength.”
In reality of course, Jacob suspected there was more to this incident than met the eye. The glow, for one, the strange strength he felt and just how amazing he felt after being exposed to so much radiation. With plans to test the theory later when he is alone, Jacob decided to play it off as he shoved with his hands - even though his hands never moved.
Mr. Anderson stared down at him for a few moments longer before straightening up and nodding, “Well, I’m glad you’re feeling alright after your… exposure recently. However, try not to shove anyone else around if you please, Mr. Russell.” With that, he turned on his heels and went to pick Tyler up off of the ground before leading the boy out of the crowd and then out of the cafeteria.
Meanwhile, Jacob was just staring in amazement at his escape of punishment for fighting, while simultaneously his mind went back to his plan to get transferred to Tri-City Academy. Once he figured out what was going on, he was certain he could use it to his advantage in some sort of plan.
*
For once, the rest of the day passed quietly and soon enough Jacob was walking through the front door of his house - depositing his school bag in its usual place on the floor and taking the stairs two at a time to his room. Immediately, he moved to his computer and started by researching radiation and its effects on the human body. He knew he had had a dose of at least a thousand rems, probably more, and all his research supported the theory that he should be dead or dying at that moment.
Nausea, loss of appetite, bone marrow loss… and a handful of other terrifying symptoms, not even including death, and he had none of them. In fact, he still felt stronger than ever. Plus, there were those couple of incidents where Tyler had gone flying and he hadn’t touched him. Now was the time to do a bit of a test, before some major experimentation because as any proper scientist will tell you experimentation is necessary to get real answers. As such, he wiped his browser history and closed his browser before closing his laptop lid and moving to sit in the middle of the bed.
Looking around the room he decided to start small and concentrating on the empty waste basket he suddenly felt for its weight with his mind and then after a couple minutes of concentration he was able to lift it off the floor - rolling in the air because it is top heavy.
“Well, that took very little effort…” he murmured under his breath as he set the basket down.
Next, he decided to try a more complex movement and concentrating on his laptop he focused on the idea of unplugging the power cord, of how he would grasp it near the port and pull it out of the socket. To his happy surprise, he felt the tug in his mind and saw the cord pull out before dropping to the desk. Next, with a bent finger, he crooked it at the laptop comically and made it float up and across the room towards him on his bed where he caught it and set it down.
“Interesting… I wonder if I can do heavier objects... But what…” he mumbled to himself before looking down at what he was sitting on and smiling to himself he took a deep breath and concentrated on lifting the bed up a few inches. Unlike the waste basket and the laptop, however, the bed would not budge and he could feel the strain in his mind as he started to break a sweat - both mental and physical. Stopping for a moment to catch his breath he decided to take a few deep, cleansing breaths and prepared to try again.
This time as he concentrated on moving the bed, he was subconsciously wishing he wasn’t such a small person - that he was stronger. That is when he felt a sudden tugging sensation throughout his body, even as his eyes remained shut. The tugging remained as he glowed, unknowingly, and began to change - by the time he could feel his bed levitating in his mind he opened his eyes because he had to fight not to let his bed drop those few inches. He was afraid he'd draw too much attention to himself and that his parents might find out.
Carefully setting the bed down, Jacob uncrossed his legs and walked over to the mirror to see the new person staring back at him. His body was just starting to lose the intense glow he had seen as he turned his head to the mirror, to begin with, it was almost a warm yellow-colored glow. He tugged the, now, much tighter T-shirt up over his head to reveal a chest and abdomen rippling with hard earned muscles of a more athletic teenager.
“What the fu-” he starts before there is a rap on the door from his father telling him dinner is ready.
“I think I did eat too much at breakfast and lunch dad, still pretty full up here.”
A pause and then, “Alright, I’ll set you aside a plate in case you get hungry, deal?”
Jacob smirked slightly as he kept admiring his new body, “Deal.”
He wasn’t sure how he was going to explain this change to his parents, let alone the world, yet so he thought it best if he remained up in his room to further explore. After a quick check down below to see what he had going on in that department, which he was thoroughly pleased with, he walked to the closet to pull out every superhero comic book he owned and settled down on his bed to read them.
He would read all night if he had to so as to figure out what was going on with him and his new body. And read he did, without one or two stops to relieve himself into a tissue, he closed the last comic book after reading them about 20 times a piece at about 11 pm and laid back on his bed - stripped down to his boxers as usual.
In the span of a few hours since he had gotten home he had went from his normal, scrawny and short teenage self to this athletic, well-defined, muscular being. That was the sort of thing they were bound to notice and not just because they noticed every little detail about changes in his looks and personality anyways.
And so, he soon fell asleep with surprising ease considering his mind was full of all sorts of ways to explain his sudden change in appearance to his parents.
Chapter: 5 Experimentation
For a change, Jacob woke as soon as his alarm went off and rubbed his eyes as he sat up and turned to hang his legs over the edge. Before he dropped his hands and looked, bleary-eyed into the mirror across from him. What he saw shocked him to his core, no longer did he have the athletic, firm muscled - larger form from the previous night, his normal, scrawny very little muscles body was back. Clearly whatever had set of the change was not permanent.
However, as he moved around the room looking for clean clothes to pull on after a quick shower, Jacob knew this was only the beginning. Now that he knew that he had these telekinetic powers, or so they seemed to be to him, it was a time to do some experimentation. Of course, what better time to do some serious experimentation then when his parents went out of town that coming weekend. With that in mind and a clean shirt and pair of jeans in hand, he quickly
moved into his own attached bathroom and turned the water on.
Some 15 - 20 minutes later he was walking down stairs like any other day - his hair still damp front the shower but a sort of spring in his step as his brain worked out all the ways he could test these new abilities. His end goal, of course, coming up with a plan to show his parents just why he should transfer to Tri-City Academy.
“Hey, Mom, Dad - sup?” Jacob asked as he slid his way into a chair at the table and helped himself, with restraint, to some eggs and bacon this morning - squirting ketchup all over the eggs with a satisfying squelch.
Alan looks up briefly from his paper and smiled before disappearing behind it, his voice wafts through it as he reads the sports section. “Did you sleep well?”
Jacob, who had just shovelled a forkful of eggs in his mouth chewed as quickly as he could and swallowed - clearing his throat slightly as he started speaking. “Go-” ― “Good, I think I slept off all of that extra food I packed in yesterday and over the weekend.”
Alan chuckled, “Well, we set a plate aside for you and there are plenty of leftovers. Probably enough for you to live off of while we attend the short conference about Treyton and this incident this weekend if you so choose.”
Jacob pretended to be surprised, “Oh? You mean you’re not taking me with you? I can stay home alone?”
Katherine nodded as she picked up Alan’s empty plate and brought it with hers to the kitchen sink. “Your father and I agree that you are plenty old enough to stay home alone for a weekend.”
“Just no wild parties.” Alan winked at his son with a grin.
Katherine playfully smacked her husband on the shoulder, “Alan!”
