“Oh.” He grinned sheepishly. “Actually I thought we’d pick that out together. But there’s something else.” He held up a finger. “Wait here.”

Clay raced outside, and returned seconds later, carrying a small bundle of yellow fur.

  “You brought me a puppy?”

“A golden retriever.” He nodded, grinning all over himself as she cradled it in her arms like a baby. The puppy bounced up and down and licked her chin. “I wanted to give you something that Tom couldn’t.”

Megan’s throat closed as she reached for his hand and placed it over her stomach. “Honey, you already have.”

His gaze met hers, his pulse racing as her message sank in. “You mean…?”

“Yes, Clay,” she said softly. “We’re going to have a baby.”

The empty black hole that had once occupied a canyon in his mind disappeared as love filled it. He took her in his arms, puppy and all, and carried her to the bedroom.

“Thank God,” he whispered. “I’ll never have to be alone again.” He gently eased her and the dog on the bed.

“I didn’t know you didn’t like to be alone,” Megan teased.

He ripped off his shirt. “Honey, there’s a lot of things you don’t know about me.” Lowering his head, he kissed her softly. “Now, let’s play with this puppy till he falls asleep, then I’ll tell you everything you want to know about Clayton Fox.”

“I hear puppies sleep a lot.”

“Pregnant women need a lot of sleep, too.” He nuzzled her neck. “I’ll be glad to keep you company.”

Megan smiled and pulled at his shirt. “You’re right. And I have a feeling I’m going to need a lot of bed-rest.”
