“The new crew is adapting better than expected and are skilled in several areas already, so not much to do training wise just to watch and make sure they understand our codes and our standards.” Samantha says adding, “They seem to be good wolves.”
“Yes, we are not only already back on schedule, but we are a bit ahead of schedule now that the whole crew put in a full weekend.” Crew smiled, “These new wolves want to earn their keep so you will have no problem getting overtime from them when it is available.”
“Has it looked like there needs to be any modifications to the plans in any ways? Anything unforeseen in that area?” Galen asked
“No, not at all, it’s looking good.” Crew stated.
“Good, good, anything else you guys think we need to know about or needs to be brought up?” Ryan inquired.
“Not at this time.” Crew said.
“I will have the operating crews finished on that side job tomorrow. We can then go ahead and start clearing the wooded areas on the community project. The wood will be sold to the lumber mill we buy from down the river per our normal agreements with them.” Nathan stated.
“Okay, Seth has something he wants to present, or something I asked him if he would present to everyone today. He done it last week and is a bit nervous so bare with.” Ryan smiled and waved his hand to Seth.
“I would like to first start by saying that I painted this while I was zoned out so if it isn’t right I am sorry and I hope it doesn’t disappoint.” Seth said nervously standing and going over to the painting he had leaned over against the wall near the windows. He picked it up then came over to the head of the table near Ryan needing his comfort and turned it around to show everyone.
“Oh my God, Seth that is amazing!” Nathan said standing to go over to stand closer and see the details up close. “Shit I recognize some of these people.”
“Me too, you are brilliant. It is one thing to build it and see it in blueprints but this is awesome.” Crew said.
“As do I, several in fact, look at the people coming out of the fourth house. Remember they came by a couple years ago said to give them a call if we ever built a nice family community, and then they bought that small house near the park. They said it would do until they had their family growing.” Ryan said remembering the conversation.
“Yes, they were trying to get pregnant, but were having trouble. They said they were looking into some new methods to help while they practiced on their own. The poor woman was so embarrassed when he said that.” Nathan said laughing.
“Seth you have amazing skills. You so have to come work for me in my department. The pay is good. Ask the boss here he will tell you, you are a shoe in for the job. You will need to open a bank account to have direct deposit for your checks. Ryan can help you with that, right bub.” Galen said.
“Sure can if he wants the job it is his.” Ryan said smiling his arm around Seth’s shoulder.
“You mean you would pay me to draw and paint and stuff?” Seth asked confused. He had never gotten paid before for anything, never had money of his own.
“Of course you are very talented Seth.” Ryan said.
“But I am an omega.” Seth said. “I have never been paid for anything; I have never been paid for any of my work.”
“Didn’t your old alpha sell you paintings and drawings? He said as much when he was talking in the conference room.” Ryan stated.
“Yes, but I was his omega, he bought me. I was his property, everything of me was his. If he chooses not to let me live or breathe then that was his choice I didn’t have one.” Seth said in a way that made it seem like this was just how things were and that the terrors of his life were just things to be accepted. Ryan didn’t want to accept them. He wanted to go back and beat that asshole. Crew and the others excused themselves.
“Seth this is a new pack and that is not how things work here. While I did sign those papers it was to get you away from that alpha. I could not stand to see you being hurt; I am sure by now you can feel the pull that you are my mate. I will never force that on you though, it will always be your choice. As will taking this job if you want it. Any money you earn will be yours. I earn more than enough money to pay bills and support us, use your money that you make however you wish. Save it, use it, donate it to charity for all I care it is yours. Or don’t work, it is up to you.” Ryan said and turned to see everyone had already discreetly left them alone to talk.
He took Seth to his office and then sat down and talked to his mate in his lap. Then he got to work while Seth went to talk to Galen about the job. Ryan was happy he was interested and even sort of excited. It seemed he was a little leery like he couldn’t believe it was really true but that would change. As he left June came in with the file on the house between his and Galen’s; he smiled seeing they won the bid and could now work on another house maybe move it so all three are next to each other then put Crew up in the other. He had been with them for a while and he had more than proven himself. He would have to talk to the others about it soon.
Chapter 19 Seth
Seth had talked to Galen and learned about all his department did and what all he wished his department could do. He told him about the projects they had going on and introduced him to the team that worked under him in that office. He didn’t have too many people working for him as he did most of the work himself. He told Seth that there weren’t really any other wolves trained or talented enough to do the work in his department and that he was excited he decided to come work for him.
Over the next week he learned the ins and outs of what they did and who was who in the business as well as their company. He loved June and Connie who made him feel like part of the family and not out of place. June had delayed her wedding while her man went out of country on business. She was not happy but decided to hang here until he got back.
He was nervous more often than not, but Galen didn’t want him to do any big projects or anything major until he learned the basic stuff first. Plus he was told he needed to learn about computers for his department as well. It was hard to learn new things. June was even showing him some of the basic things on computers while Connie took over more.
Ryan had taken him to set up a bank account and his first check was supposed to be deposited today. He was excited and got home before Ryan so he started cooking because he was nervous. They had the weekend off and he wanted to celebrate. He had ribs baking in the oven to tenderize them and chicken breasts marinating. The potato salad was almost done and he had chocolate suicide and apple dumpling pie in the oven. He was just stirring in the last of the relish as he heard the door open.
“Oh my, it smells so good in here. I had thought about inviting my brothers over but now I so don’t think so they can’t fend for themselves. It is all mine.” Ryan said as he walked in behind Seth and put his arm around his waste and reached over with the other to snag a finger into the bowl and taste test the potato salad. “Yup all mine. Did you have a good day at work Seth?”
“Yes I did, I wanted to celebrate, I get to start the real work next week.” Seth said looking up into Ryan’s eyes smelling his woodsy scent. “The brothers can come over I got ribs tenderizing and breasts marinating.”
“You so speak my language!” Ryan said pulling out his phone to text.
“You mean food.” Seth said giggling and taking the desserts out of the oven.
“Did you just tell a joke? My mate you are so going to get tickled.” He went back into the kitchen the saw the apple pie type dessert and stopped in his tracks saying. “Or I could be bribed with say some of that.” As he reached Seth swatted his hand away.
Now that the goodies were out he put the chicken in to cook a bit before he would leave it to the other men to put it on the grill outside. Ryan was taking a shower and the guys would be here as soon as they took theirs. So he went out and started the grill so it would be hot enough by the time they needed it. Grabbed the cooler that was out there and put the bag of ice from the freezer
in it and put it back out there with a six pack from the fridge.
He was sure the guys would bring more so that would do for now. Who would have thought he would ever get used to being around this much food and getting to eat it too. So he started skewering vegetables for the grill too. He had about ten done when the doorbell rang then opened.
He heard Nathan and Galen arguing over whether they should still just walk in or not anymore. Just then Ryan came out from the back hair still wet but dressed. “Of course you can come in, your family. If you get an eye full when you do, then maybe you will learn something.” He said and turned winking at Seth.
“Oh brother dear I will have you know I am quite experienced, maybe you should be asking advice from me big brother.” Galen laughed as he walked into the kitchen to help a wide eyed Seth.
Seth recovered and just handed Ryan and Nathan the pans of meat saying, “Burly alphas go grill, and we will finish wrapping these and bring them out. There is beer in the cooler out there.” Galen started helping him wrap the skewered vegetables as the men went out the sliding door and shut it.
“So how are you and Ryan getting along? You seem to be closer, more comfortable around him. Not flinching or jumping all the time. Have you come to trust him fully now?” Galen asked.
“I-I feel good around him. He makes me feel safe and …. We snuggled on the couch watching a movie the other night and I just wanted to do more than curl up in his lap and have him hold me, but...” Seth said shrugging.
“Did you tell him how you felt? Let him know you were willing for more but maybe a little scared?” Galen said turning Seth’s chin to look at him. “He won’t take anything farther than you want sooner than you want because he knows what you went through. He cares too much for you. I see the way he looks at you. You are his mate he would die for you.”
“I care for him a lot too, but I don’t want him to think it is because he saved me or I owe him. I know I don’t need to be scared of him, but I worry and am glad he is taking it slow. I just wish like hell at times he wouldn’t.” Seth said laughing as he wrapped the last one putting them on the tray to take out. He and Galen brought out the desserts and sticks then went back for the other drinks that Nathan had brought to put in the cooler.
When the food was closer to done they brought out the potato salad, plates and utensils. Now as they talked and enjoyed themselves he could officially say he was living a more normal life. A blessed life. His alpha must have seen him looking around smiling at the comradery because the next thing he knew he felt an arm around his shoulder. He looked up smiling, “Hi.”
“Hi there yourself. You did a great job on the food. Thank you.” Ryan said. The others seen the mood and started cleaning up and bringing stuff inside. Then making their excuses to leave and soon the two of them were alone. “So Galen says you want to talk to me.” Ryan said as they locked the doors and turned of the kitchen lights for the night, settling on the couch he pulled Seth down by the hand into his lap.
“What exactly did he say?” Seth said looking down not meeting his eyes.
“Just that you two had spoke while we were outside and that you wanted to talk to me about stuff but not sure about things or how to approach it.” Ryan said lifting his chin to look in his eyes. “I want you to know you can speak to me about anything. You can be comfortable speaking to me about anything; you are safe here I promise.”
Seth still couldn’t find the words he was scared to speak but he did raise his hand and run his fingers over Ryan’s forehead. Running his thumb along his eyebrow and down passed his eye to his cheekbone, then pushing some stray hair over and behind his ear. All while his other hand was on his muscular bicep absently rubbing and petting. After he tucked the stray hairs behind his ear he ran the back of his fingers down the other side of his face from cheek to chin and ran his thumb along Ryan’s lower lip; licking his own as he did so.
This made his new alpha smile one of his big happy smiles. Seth couldn’t help but smile in return just seeing that smile. He continued trailing his fingers down his chin and over his neck feeling the evening shadow there. Just imagining the feel of it on his own neck made him moan. Chapter 20 Ryan
Ryan had started out a bit nervous as they had sat down to talk that was why he needed his mate in his lap. Galen had said he had something to talk about that he didn’t know how to talk to him about but that could cover a lot of things. As soon as he saw his nervous omega touching him though as he was trying and failing to figure out how to put into words what he was wanting to say.
