She smiled up at him and nodded. “It helped me too, in a strange way—just to know others were even worse off than I was. Maybe it helped to get my mind off myself just a wee bit. There were days I didn’t think I’d make it.” Her eyes filled up and he dropped her hands to retrieve a handkerchief from his pocket. He handed it over and they walked back to the house.
Dinah was waiting by the door when they returned. Little Hannah was fussing. “I think we’d better get home. Hannah needs a real nap.” She looked from Anna to Abe. “You two are friends now? I was planning to introduce you.”
“Oh, we met, jah,” Abe said, a smile inching across his face. “We’re going to see each other tomorrow, too, if you can spare your friend’s time.”
Dinah nodded, glancing over at Anna. “She’s a big girl now. She can visit anyone she wants to. Goodness, Abe, you look two inches taller.”
His cheeks brightened and he took off his hat and turned the brim in his hands. “So I’ll pick you up tomorrow, Anna Miller, around one.”
“Jah. I’ll be ready. Don’t forget the chocolate.”
After he turned to leave, Dinah leaned over to whisper in Anna’s ear. “He hasn’t smiled since the accident. What did you do to him?”
Anna tilted her head. “I think the difference is hope. We both feel Gott brought us together. Maybe He has a plan for us.”
Dinah patted the baby and nodded. “Gott is gut. I have been praying for you to meet someone. Abe is one of the finest men I’ve ever met. Perhaps he is the answer we’ve been waiting for.”
