Now you know.
SHE WOKE UP with a gasp, her heart pounding, her hands shaking as she thrust them through the tangles in her hair.
“OMG!”
Tara! Are you okay?
Flynn! Yes. It was just a bad dream.
I could feel your fear. What happened? Did you have another premonition?
No. It was a horrible nightmare, but it had a message I’ve been waiting for.
Tell me.
I know what I’m going to do with my life.
You mean, besides spend the rest of it with me?
Tara’s heart skipped a beat. What are you saying?
Later. For now, just tell me what you want to do when you graduate from college.
I am going to work for the welfare department. I want to be an advocate for children who can’t speak for themselves. I will know when their environment is wrong . . . when they live with evil. They won’t even have to tell me what’s happening. I’ll know. I can save them, Flynn. I can make a difference.
Silence, then his voice. That’s perfect. You find the bad people, and I’ll arrest them. We’ll be the deadliest duo since Batman and Robin ever!
Tara smiled. Okay, I told you. Now you tell me what you meant by me and the rest of your life.
I guess I’m asking you if you love me as much as I love you.
Tara pulled her knees up beneath her chin and shivered with sudden longing.
If you can truly read my mind, then you already know the answer.
There was a long moment of silence, then his voice again—in her heart.
Together forever, Moon Girl?
Together forever, Flynn O’Mara. We’ll be lunatics together. Imagine. Two times the lunatics and in one place.
Unbeatable. I like that, Moon Girl.
Tara kissed her hand, then raised it to her lips and blew.
Did you feel that?
Feel what?
I just blew you a kiss. She heard him chuckle.
Ah. I wondered what that was, but you know there’s way more to this thing between us than kisses.
This time it was Tara with the long moment of silence, and then she answered.
If it’s with you, it will always be right. I trust you implicitly. Go to sleep, Flynn O’Mara, and dream of me.
Always in my heart. Always in my mind.
Her heart was pounding as she slid down beneath the covers and closed her eyes. The heat kicked on inside the house, moving the feathers on the dream catcher over her bed.
Monday she would be back in school, and come graduation she and Flynn would step into a new part of life.
Stronger together, and no longer alone in this lunatic life she called her own.
The End
