But Dana was right about one thing. He treated us better than any of my masters treated me. Maybe Mom was better off with him. Either way, I’d have to ask Thao and Dahn to find him. “What about Cara?”

“Yeah, about her, well…I saw her at a match two weeks ago. We got a chance to talk in the ready room for a few minutes. I told her about how you’d been freed. She was overjoyed, hadn’t heard. And I told her how you’d snuck into Suarez’s party to come save me. We both knew you’d try again. And you did.”

Dana burst into tears. “I’m so happy you did. Moira. We’ve got to help her.”

I noticed she still hadn’t answered my question, and my heart sank. “We will. What’s wrong with Cara?”

“She’s lost a few big matches recently,” Dana said, “and her owner refuses to pay for a healer whenever Cara doesn’t make him money. I think she’s starting a downward spiral.”

My stomach churned. Sorcerers were so stingy. “Is she still owned by that bastard, Wang Lee?”

  Dana nodded.

“How can he expect her to win if she has to fight hurt?” Philippe asked.

“That’s how I was treated, too,” I said. “It’s totally stupid, but my owners used to tell me that rule gave me an extra incentive to win.”

“I think Wang is tired of her,” Dana said. “Of course, now he can’t sell her because she’s on a losing streak. This won’t end well.”

I patted her hand. “We’ll find her and bust her out. Our detectives are already looking for her and Mom. You and I will help them, starting as soon as we get back tomorrow.”
