Riker moved back in front of him. Expressionless, he spoke. “Korgh, son of Torav—”

  “Get out of my way!”

“—also known as Galdor. You are under arrest for crimes perpetrated against the United Federation of Planets, including thirty-seven counts of conspiracy to commit murder during the may’qochvan celebration on Gamaral, in Federation space. You are further charged with conspiracy to commit fraud against the exiles of Thane, also a Federation territory.”

“You must be mad, Riker.” Korgh managed a sneer. “You have no authority over me, not here.” He pounded his fist against his chest and shouted to the sky. “I am a Klingon!”

Riker leaned in and whispered, “Not anymore.”

  Acknowledgments

Worf thought it would take a colossal quest to get Kahless into Sto-Vo-Kor—and taking on this trilogy has at times seemed a monumental quest of my own. A year and a half of my life transpired while I was commuting to the Beta Quadrant, and the fact that the final product reflects what I set out to do owes a great deal to the efforts of many.

First and foremost, thanks go to my editor Margaret Clark, for her boundless patience, invaluable advice, and moral support; as well as to Ed Schlesinger, John Van Citters, and all those who made this work possible. Thanks once again are due Brent Frankenhoff, James Mishler, Robert Peden, and Michael Singleton for their feedback along the way. Marc Okrand’s works were again a major source of inspiration. And a Klingon salute to Felix Malmenbeck, who knew it should be may’qochvan and not ma’qochvan—and who contributed many other suggestions regarding the bits of tlhIngan Hol used herein.

My appreciation as usual goes to Meredith Miller, proofreader and number one on my bridge—and especial thanks go to Pocket Books and CBS for allowing me to be part of the fiftieth anniversary year of Gene Roddenberry’s creation. I was born the night “A Piece of the Action” first aired, so in a sense, Star Trek has been the journey of a lifetime for me; I suspect that’s the case for most of you reading. It has been an honor to provide a stop along your own individual Star Trek voyages—and as Kahless tells us, there is nothing more important than honor.
