Jessica said, “I think Old Blue’s enjoying his retirement.”

  “He’s earned it.”

She was smiling. “You know, this little canyon already feels like home.”

“At this rate, we’ll be moved in before winter.”

She said, “We’ll raise Cora here. And other children, too.”

He looked at her. “Other children?”

  “Well, at least one more.”

“Are you trying to tell me something?”

She gave a broad, beaming smile. “Well, when you came back from the trail drive, I remember I welcomed you home right proper. Such things tend to have consequences.”

Johnny found himself smiling, too. At his age, he hadn’t thought he would become a father again.

He pulled her in for long tight hug.

He said, “There’s no one I would rather build a life with.”

She nodded, her face rubbing against his shoulder. “And we’ll build that life right here. In our little canyon. Our own little corner of the world.”
