  “My mom taught me. Sorry.”

Gobardon said nothing for a while. They watched a patch of cloud shift below them, drifting like a huge specter. Her eyes found her father off to the side, having a low conversation with Uncle Alexei.

  “Aren’t you worried?” Gobardon asked.

  “About what?”

  “Mersetzdeitz?”

  She frowned. “Should I be?”

His eyes snapped down to her. Alarm crossed his face. “There are a lot of Mages there. A lot of old blood.”

  “Old blood like your father?”

  “Yes.”

“Will they be after me, too?”

“If they find out about you. You’re special, Meese. Has anyone ever told you that?”

“I’m weird,” she corrected. “I absorbed a crystal spirit. Like a sponge. Or an amoeba.”

“No one’s ever done that before. People will be curious.”

Great. She hoped their curiosity took a different form than Michael’s had.

She was about to reply, but they were interrupted by a grumble from inside the cockpit. The metal floor grid ticked as Aiden stepped to the door, squinting at the light.

  Everyone looked up expectantly.

“I can’t get hold of Ivern. It’s like his comm is down, or…” The Fire Mage winced and ducked his head back into the cockpit briefly to check the screen. When he came back out, his eyes fixed on Gobardon. “Have you heard of anything happening?”

“I’ve been out of the city for a long time.”

“Shit.” Aiden leaned back inside, hands on his hips as he turned back to the screen. Mieshka saw his lip curl in frustration.

  “What’s the plan?” she asked.

The others had drawn nearer, Jo on the forefront, listening.

“Well, we can’t stay here,” he said. “Nothing to eat on the mountain.” He closed his mouth, licked his lips.

Her stomach knotted. Maybe it was Gobardon’s words, but she felt a sudden foreboding about this trip.

It was too late to go back.

Finally, Aiden turned around. The light hit his face again, his blue eyes almost as gray as the sky.

“We’ll stick to the plan. Everyone back in, we’re heading to Mersetzdeitz.”

To be continued in… Palace of Glass.

  Author's Note

Thank you so much for reading Firebird—I hope you enjoyed it! If you did, and you have a spare five minutes, would you mind leaving a review of the book? Reviews help other readers decide if the book is for them or not, and they help us authors get into some of the bigger promotional websites (some only take books with lots of reviews!)

Palace of Glass, book three, is on the way to publication right now (as I type this, on October 11th, Palace of Glass is scheduled to hit the editor’s desk on Monday, October 15th). At 510 pages (180,000 words) long, it’s a hefty book and will take a while to edit, and I won’t have an estimated release day set in stone until my editor gets a good look at it and can give me dates, but I’m aiming to have it released by December 20th.

In the meantime, there actually are still things you can read. Palace of Glass (book three, the one going to the editor) is actually the convergence of two series, The Elemental Wars and Fury of the Wind. Fury of the wind has two stories available now, Sylphide and Tempest, and features another Elemental in the city where everything in Palace of Glass goes down, Mersetzdeitz. I highly recommend reading those two before moving on to Palace of Glass. I also happen to offer Sylphide as a freebie to anyone who signs up to my newsletter, which you can do here: https://www.subscribepage.com/Elemental_Wars_Signup

If not, you can find the Amazon links below:

  Sylphide: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013M7U8HW/

  Tempest: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01E1ND7D8/

  READING ORDER FOR ALL BOOKS:

  1. Into the Fire + Cat and Meese

  2. Firebird

  3. Sylphide

  4. Tempest

  5. Palace of Glass

*Into the Dark is a short story that can be read at anytime. It is set around the same time as Cat and Meese.

And, if you’re looking to read more by me, I have a science fiction (space opera, kind of like Star Wars or Firefly) series on the go. Here’s the link to book one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BB1V9HP/
