Lisbet walked out the door, wiping her hands on a dishcloth. “Howdy, you two, come in. Dinner is just about ready.”
Etta walked up and drew Lisbet into a tight hug. “How are you, hun?”
“I’m doing alright…grateful for the company. I gotta tell ya, I’m goin’ crazy with hearin’ my own voice. I mean, Ben tries, but there really isn’t much companionship an energetic little boy can provide.”
“Energetic? Can ya imagine how he’d be if he didn’t have all this space to run around in?” Harry walked up to the two, the little boy in his arms giggling as he tickled his ribs.
“Yes, it’s a good thing. I honestly can’t wait for Rayne to get home. This cattle buyin’ trip is takin’ way too long.” Lisbet smiled at her friends and son.
For Lisbet, the weeks after Maddie’s death were a series of ups and downs. The couple had spent most of their days arguing about being a family again, and nights making love. Lisbet would hold Rayne after she woke up from the nightmares in which she dreamt it had been her that had killed Maddie instead of Clinton. Lisbet eventually made a case for reuniting her family, regardless of the dangers, and the family bought the ranch they had fallen in love with. Rayne still served as deputy on a part time basis but was thrilled to finally get back to ranching and watching Ben run and play. And Lisbet…well Lisbet was thrilled to be right where she belonged, in Rayne’s home and bed. The place she planned to live the rest of her life.
