“Time doesn’t heal anything.”
He drank his scotch.
“I better get the garlic bread out of the oven before it burns,” I said.
“How is your mother today?” he asked, crouching to pet Darth.
“Feisty, conniving.”
“Back to her old self again?”
I nodded and placed the warm tray of garlic bread on top of the stove to cool.
“And your sister?”

“Sounds like therapy has helped her.”

Feeling the onslaught of tears, I turned to the window, staring out into a cold overcast day, an angry wind beating and rattling the bare oak trees.
Fatigue gripped me and I turned to Philip. “I love you.”
We held each other, kissed, groping, smacking, puckering, trying to find the right connection. “I appreciate everything you’ve done for me.”
Never take life or loved ones for granted, I heard a voice whispering somewhere in the depth of my mind.
