The Most Dangerous Mitch in the Multiverse

“This sounds familiar,” SoHee said, rising from her seat before glancing in Kalis’s direction.

“Although it is only a legend, my people have always believed that the Gods would return and open the door,” Varalis said as she turned to SoHee. “They claim you are a goddess incarnate. Perhaps you’ve got the key?”

“They say a lot of things, but this is not the first time I’ve heard of such a thing,” SoHee said. “Kalis told us a story of a similar structure in her homeward.”

“That’s right,” Kalis said. “The Contronominus is held in reverence by my people, and it shares similar properties with this structure. It is said to be a gateway for the Gods. The Masters have taken great interest in this structure during their occupation of my planet, but I am unaware of any actions they may have taken to initiate a portal through conventional means. It appears the technology required to activate these structures was lost in antiquity, if there is any truth to the story.”

“But the conventional methods used by the Masters may not be suitable to the task,” Gerald said, breaking his silence. “SoHee has demonstrated the ability to manifest portals on her own. Perhaps she has the power to activate this one?”

“Nothing slips past this guy,” Varalis said without looking at Gerald. “It’s a long shot, but it may be your best chance to get out of here without the Masters catching wind.”

“We’ve done it before,” Mitch said. “That’s how we wound up here.”

“That’s right,” Drak replied. “But that was with a different technology.”

“I don’t think it will matter,” SoHee said. “All of this stuff works on the same principle. If the legends are true, we can focus our energy like we did before and see if we can do it again.”

“It’s worth a shot,” Mitch said. “Have you got enough left in the tank for this?”

“I think I can drag something out,” SoHee said before her orb unpacked itself from around her neck.

“I got your back,” Mitch said, activating his spear. “We’ll do it together.”

“Don’t forget about me,” Drak said, stepping forward.

“The man with the plan, how could I forget about you?” Mitch said. “Without you, we’d all be prisoners right now. You weren’t kidding about those Jushkoos being the stuff of nightmares.”

“And now they are the Master’s nightmare, but we’ve all got you to thank for freeing us once again,” Drak said while holding his spear at his side. “I’m glad to have the Most Dangerous Mitch in the Multi-verse on my side.”

“He’ll always be #epiccrotchshot boy to me,” Kate said from behind.

“You’ll never let it go, will you Kate?” Mitch said as he looked toward the stone. “We’d better do this quick. There’s no telling when they’ll show up, and if this doesn’t work, we’re going to need a back-up plan quick.”

“I’ve got a feeling this is what we’ve been looking for,” SoHee said, raising her arms. “On my count, let’s focus our energy on the stone.”

“Count us down then,” Drak said.

“Here we go. Three, two, one, let it go,” SoHee said before she unleashed a wide torrent of energy upon the stone.

In time with SoHee, Drak and Mitch blasted the stone with their spears. After several seconds, cracks in the rock appeared along its edge before a bright light cascaded across the cauldron.

As SoHee relaxed her beam, a wide halo appeared before the stone as it pulsed and glowed before them.

“How am I not surprised by this?” Mitch said, shutting off his beam.

“Don’t back off yet,” SoHee shouted as she raised her arms again “I think we’re going to need to give it another push.”

“All right, let’s keep it up,” Mitch said, pulling up his spear.

Pressing her hands ahead, SoHee let loose a blast as Mitch and Drak joined in. Their beams combined together at the center of the halo, sending a tremendous burst of energy into the opening. Blinded by the light emanating from the portal, Mitch was forced to look away while he pushed back against his quivering spear.

As his eyes recovered, he saw several spires of light crackling along the edge of the halo and a deep darkness sitting beyond the pulsing beams.

“I think that did it,” Mitch said, relaxing his arm.

“We can’t be sure, but I don’t think we should waste any time,” SoHee shouted.

“Hold on a minute,” Gerald said, stepping in. “How do we even know where the hell this thing goes?”

“There’s no telling,” Mitch said. “But I think I’d rather take my chances in the portal than risk getting caught by the Masters. Right now, escape is our only option. We’ll have to just trust in the multi-verse and hope everything turns out. As strange as it sounds, it seems that where ever we wind up is exactly where we are supposed to be.”

“Wise words, Mitch Mythic,” SoHee said before turning toward the portal. “But I think you should save your philosophizing for after we get through. Who’s going first?”

“I’ll do it,” Kate said. “TaeJun and I are ready for another date.”

“I just do what she says,” TaeJun said.

“You are so whipped,” Gaelin said, standing up.

“We’re right behind you,” Davis said as he, Babcock and Jamison stepped toward the portal alongside the other surviving soldiers.

“I think I’ve had enough of this planet,” Robert said, stepping forward. “I could use another vacation.”

“You are such a tourist,” Allan said from his side.

“I’m sure we’ll be getting plenty of rest and relaxation on the next hostile planet we arrive on,” Kalis said, gliding past Robert.

“We all go together,” Gerald said as he joined his companions.

“What do you say, Drak?” Mitch said, turning to his friend. “Are you ready for another jump through the hole?”

“I’m afraid I won’t be making this trip with you, Mitch,” Drak said as he turned to face Mitch. “My people need me here. This fight is far from over, and they could use all the help they can get. This staff may be just what my people need.”

“As much as it pains me to leave you here, you are absolutely right,” Mitch said before he reached out and embraced his friend. “You’ve been right about everything.”

“Don’t worry, Mitch Mythic,” Drak said while he grabbed Mitch by the shoulders. “We will see each other again soon. The fight for the multi-verse has only just begun, and it looks like you will be right in the middle of it all the way to the end. When the time is right, Chalthantar will back you in your conquest, but this next phase of your journey you will have to do without me.”

“I understand completely,” Mitch said, hugging Drak again. “We’re not dead yet, right?”

“And we live to fight again,” Drak said as Mitch broke away from their embrace.

“We’ll be in touch, Drakon Trendago,” Mitch said after he came to SoHee’s side.

“We might not get another chance at this,” SoHee said while she readied herself before the portal. “Nobody, panic. Let’s move through in an orderly fashion.”

“You heard the lady,” Gerald said. “If you’re so eager, Kate, you and TJ go first. Davis and Babcock and the other soldiers will protect Gaelin. He’s still holding our only contact with Earth, so, as far as I’m concerned we need to protect him at all costs. I’m sticking by Robert. Kalis and Allan next, and Mitch and SoHee go last.”

“Just can’t help but give out orders, can you Gerald?” SoHee said with a laugh.

“Somebody’s got to take charge of this bunch,” Gerald said.

Turning back to face Drak, Mitch waved again while his companions rushed toward the portal. Drak flashed his famous grin while indicating with his chin that is was time to go.

Feeling a tug at his sleeve, Mitch turned to see SoHee standing beside him with her eyes fixed on the opening.

“Are you ready for this?” Mitch asked.

  “I’m not sure if I’ve g
ot much of a choice,” SoHee said before she grabbed his hand. “But there’s never a dull moment when you’re with the Most Dangerous Mitch in the Multi-verse. Come on, before it’s too late.”

“Not you too,” Mitch said as SoHee stepped forward.

Glancing over his shoulder, Mitch spotted Drak watching him from a distance before he felt a crackling pulse pass over his body as he and SoHee crossed the threshold of the portal.
