  Chapter One - Helen

Helen lay back on the pillow, all her earlier elation gone. She didn’t know how to react. Life seemed too cruel, too unfair. Why couldn’t this have happened before she had slept with him? Before she had made up her mind to take control of her life and her happiness.

It was hard to imagine she was ever meant to move on and be happy. Of course, she should choose Oliver. But before she had come away with Oliver, she told the girls this was her chance to make a better life for them. She had told her parents the same thing too. Was she supposed to go back and tell them she had chosen a man over their financial security?

That wouldn't be so bad, if the mess she was already in wasn’t down to being deserted by a man. What right had she to give up the chance of a better life for her and her children? When he might dump her in a couple of weeks. After all, what did she have to give a man who was about to take over the day to day running of a large, well respected, bank? One who flew around the world in a private jet. And was the most handsome man she had ever seen.

All she had to offer was baggage.

His hand on her shoulder jerked her back to reality. His voice was gentle when he said, “Helen, please don’t shut me out.”

She turned to look at him. “Isn’t that what I have to do? Shut you out of my life? Do you honestly think we have a future together, Oliver? It was stupid. A childish dream to think that I could make a man like you happy.”

He smiled at her, and kissed her shoulder, sending tremors through her body. “That’s exactly what I was thinking. That it was stupid to think a self-centred man like me could ever make a woman like you happy. That I’d screw it up, and so it would be better to frighten you away. Make you take the job instead.”

She stroked his cheek. “You’re not self-centred, Oliver. You could make me happier than I ever thought possible.”

“Then let’s make this work. One way or another let’s do this, together.”

“But there is no happy ending is there? Either I date you, or I take the job?”

  “Yes.”

“And I have to make this decision based on what I feel right now. After we've just had sex.”

“Was it sex, Helen? Or did we make love?”

“I don’t know. Oliver. For me it was more than incredible. But you’ve been with so many more partners than me. Women who are so much more experienced.”

“And they don’t compare, Helen. And no, I’m not just saying that to get inside you again.”

She laughed, despite her sadness. “You hid your romantic side so well.”

“That didn’t come out quite how it was supposed to. But I mean it. It was deeper than anything I’d ever felt before. I’m in love with you, Helen. Yes, I have slept with plenty of women. But there is only a few that I’ve ever thought I loved. And there is only one that I’ve actually felt safe enough with to actually tell.”

“You don’t have to say that.”

“Yes. Yes I do. I want you to know that this is hard for me too. I waited until the business deal was finished before I made a move. I didn’t want to risk you getting hurt. I want you to believe me when I say I didn’t see this coming. I should have, but I didn’t.”

  “So what do we do?”

  “Make love.”

She slapped him playfully. “I’m serious.”

“So am I?” He kissed her shoulder, and then her neck, sending her body wild. “Let’s forget that phone call happened. We don’t fly back until tomorrow. Why don't we enjoy the present?”

  “But...”

“But what? Technically, you don't work for me any more. And I don't work for the bank until Monday morning. I finished what I came here to do.”

She let his hands roam her body, all the while questioning the words he said. It might be insane, but she wanted to go along with it. If her heart broke into little pieces because they couldn't forge a future together. Then at least she would know she had made the right decision, based on more than one night in his arms. If they made love, spent time together, it might allow her to get to know him better. To see, with a clear head, that he was worth giving up the chance of a new job. That he was worth a voyage into the unknown for.

If she didn’t, and she ended this now, she would always question her decision. She needed this. She wanted this. And it had been a long time since she had ever done anything because she wanted to. For no one else but herself.

“What telephone call?” she asked, playing along.

Oliver smiled. “That’s my girl.” His lips covered hers. His hand going to her breast. Stroking her softly, he tweaked her nipple until she groaned against him. Lifting her thigh, to drape it over his leg, he fitted a condom quickly. Then he moved forward guiding himself into her heated sex.

He took her leisurely, as if they had all the time in the world. Pushing inside her inch by inch. Starting at the corner of her mouth, he kissed along her jawline. His lips moved down to her neck. Trailing along her collarbone, while his hand teased and stroked her skin.

She pressed herself onto him, needing to feel him deep inside her. He obliged, sensing her need. One hard thrust and he filled her. She sighed against him in contentment while he pressed deeper. He was such a perfect fit, in every way.

Tears pricked her eyes, but she swallowed hard, chasing them away. She could make this work. If being with Oliver meant sacrificing the job offer, she would. There were other jobs. He made her happy, a thing that had not happened to her for a long time.

She kissed him. Her hand threading through his hair, and pulling him down towards her. He slipped his hand under her bottom, and pulled her closer. They were touching, their bodies melded together in their lovemaking. Each needing to tell the other in this silent way how deep their need was. He was inside her, and all around her. His hands, his cock, his mouth and his love. In t
his moment, she felt that love. Acknowledging how much he wanted this. It wasn’t just words.

He came first, his usual self-control lost as he thrust into her, his seed filling the condom. Straining against her, he impaled her on his cock. His mouth going to her breast, nipping her soft flesh and then sucking her nipple hard into his mouth. He rolled his tongue over the taut bud, unrelenting in his need for her to climax with him.

He reached between their bodies, and rubbed her clit. Pushing her to the limits, until she finally crashed over the edge. All the tension she had been holding dissipated. Her body lost to the intense sensations he unleashed on her.

Slowly they came back to the bedroom. He moved slowly inside her, still not wanting to pull out, to end their joining.

They lay together, the night stretching out in front of them. She didn’t want to sleep. If she only had a few hours with him, she wanted to be awake for every single minute. Here, in Oliver's arms, was where she wanted to be. However, she couldn’t stop her mind going through all the possible scenarios in front of them. All the ways they would either succeed or fail.

She knew this little bubble of happiness they had created couldn’t last. The real world was waiting for them. She only hoped it wasn’t waiting to tear them apart.

Helen had experienced of the hardships life threw at you. Enough to know making their separate lives fit together was going to be tough. Maybe the toughest thing either of them had ever done. They were really going to have to work to make their relationship last. But if it did. Maybe. Just maybe, this was going to be forever.

  Dare she hope?

  Chapter Two - Oliver

Torn between what he wanted and his duty to his uncle. What was he supposed to do? If he had known about his uncle’s decision, he would never have knocked on her hotel door. Did he regret it? No.

They had forged this relationship, out of two lives that were so opposite. Yet they shared common experiences, they understood each other. So no. He didn’t regret anything. They could work it out. He was sure. Although right now the only way he could see it working was if she let the job offer go. He would find her something else. Or maybe she could just move in with him.

Yes. He could just see it now. Helen in his bed, and two children barging in on them. For a man who liked his privacy, this was going to be a tough adjustment.

He sighed, and kissed her, breathing in the scent of her. She had fallen asleep, at last, and he watched the rise and fall of her body. Wanting to watch over her, to chase any demons away. He had never felt this protective over anyone. And that gave him hope. Maybe with her help he could learn to love her daughters and become the man who protected them too. They had all had a rough time at the hands of Helen’s husband.

This became part of his decision too. It wasn’t only about work and money. It was about setting up a stable relationship. Not just between him and Helen, but between him and the girls too. He had to make a commitment to be there for them. Through thick and thin. This was not a business deal he could simply walk away from if there wasn’t a profit in it for him.

Children came first. It didn’t matter that they weren't his. He had to decide whether he was ready for this. For a man who never thought of having children himself, until he met Helen, that was tough. Was it possible to change overnight? And then stick to that decision. Or was it simply that he was infatuated by Helen?

Pulling her close, he weighed up his options. He either gave this a chance, or moved on. Well, backwards really. Yet he knew, after what he had shared with Helen over these last few days, no superficial relationship was ever going to cut it. She had spoiled him for the life of a playboy bachelor.

He smiled. He had better start getting used to the idea of school runs and sticky fingerprints. As long as he didn’t have to dress up as a princess, he could get used to the idea.

At that moment, he swore to himself that if Helen chose him, he would do everything in his power to make her children happy. He would put them first, and make sure they had a happier childhood than he had. He would be the father they deserved. To make up for the man who had abandoned them.

He was about to take over running a bank. How hard could having a family be?

  Chapter Three - Helen

“I’ll be home in a few hours. No. You don’t need that today..”

“Morning,” Oliver mouthed at her. Kissing the top of her head, he got out of bed and headed for the shower.

“Yes, Jess. That’s right. No, I’ll sort it all out when I get back.” She took in a steadying breath. “I love you too. See you later.”

Putting her phone down on the bed, she lay back on the pillow and rubbed her eyes. Not exactly, the romantic start to the morning she had hoped for. Did Oliver have any idea what he was letting himself in for? What life would be like if they pursued this relationship?

When you have kids of your own, you slowly get used to the lack of privacy, and early mornings. It was going to be a real shock for Oliver. But was it one he could overcome?

Covering her face with her hands, she groaned. It wasn’t going to be easy. However, her life hadn’t been straightforward since she had become a single parent. She had survived that, and no doubt, she would survive this. No matter how it turned out.

A knock at the door pulled her back to the present. Their breakfast had arrived.

“Hi. Thank you,” she said, opening the door while still hastily tying her robe. As the two breakfasts were brought into the room, she felt embarrassed. She told herself she had nothing to be ashamed of. Except that, she was a married woman, who had slept with a man who was not her husband.

“Shall I leave it here?” the waitress asked.

“Oh, yes, thank you.” Helen pulled her robe tighter around her, wanting to disappear.

“Here,” Oliver appeared from the bathroom, a towel casually slung around his hips. He looked totally comfortable allowing a stranger to see him half naked, but then he had the body for it. While Helen simply felt even more mortified.

She needn’t have worried. The young woman stood with her mouth open. Taking a long appreciative drink of the well toned man in front of her. For a moment, the young woman didn’t react. Then, remembering herself, she held out her hand and took the service tip Oliver was offering her.

“Anything else you need. Just let me know,” she said breathlessly. Her eyes sweeping over Helen and registering how miss matched the couple were.

“I have everything I need. Thank you.” Oliver’s voice was curt. Leaving the waitress with no doubt that there were no other services he required. From her, or any other woman, other than Helen.

In that moment, her heart opened up to him. He was capable of being everything she needed. She was sure of it.

“OK. Let’s eat. Then I thought we could enjoy a little bit of Monaco before I go to the hospital and check on my uncle.”

“What time are we leaving?” she asked. She hated to hurry him, but she had to get home today. Hopefully, before bedtime.

He looked at his watch. “I was thinking about four. I checked with my pilot, he’s scheduled the plane to be refuelled and ready for us. I figured I should be able to get you home in time to see your children before bedtime. Although there’s nothing I can do if we’re delayed. Will that be OK? Or do you want me to see if he can move it to an earlier slot?”

She smiled at his thoughtfulness. “No. That should be great. I don’t want you to go to any trouble for me.”

He came to her, and slipped his arm around her waist. “I would go to any length to make you happy, Helen.” He kissed her neck, and along her collarbone, before groaning. “You have no idea of the effect you have on me. But I want to share more with you than the inside of this hotel room.”

Pulling away, he took her hand and led her to the table, where he pulled a chair out for her to sit down on. Once she was comfortable he went to the chair opposite, and together they ate. Although Helen had to force the food down. Her stomach churned with a mixture of ner
ves and excitement.

This was one of those moments when she needed to pinch herself to check it was all real. That it was not some cruel joke at her expense. Every time she looked up at him, she couldn’t believe her luck. Because luck was what it must be, there was no way a woman like her deserved a man like Oliver.

“I thought we might take a boat out. Go around to one of the beaches and relax for a while. That’s not something I do very often. And I would guess the same would be true for you Helen. Being a single parent is pretty relentless.”

“Yes. It is. Although I wouldn’t swap one single moment... Well perhaps that isn’t a hundred percent true. But you know what I mean. They are my world.” She hesitated. “And that’s what worries me. Is there room enough for us? Between your job, and my hectic life. Do you really think this is going to work?”

“I have no idea. But it’s like any business deal. You don’t know until you look at it from different angles. At the moment, we're looking at our lives from two opposing views. We have to see if those views can come together. I have learned to compromise to get a deal to work. And that’s what we might have to do.”

“I don’t think my girls know what that means.”

He laughed. “I think that it’s you and me who will need to do most of the compromising. I’m not expecting us to fall into a full time relationship, Helen. And that’s not because I don't want to. It’s because I know that would be hard for them.”

  “I’m sorry.”

“I’m not. Perhaps it will make things better. Us not being able to spend all our time together. It’ll make it so much more sweeter when we do.” His voice was low and husky, and she knew exactly what those sweet moments were going to be made up of.

She cleared her throat. “These eggs are amazing.”

He laughed. “This is going to be some lesson in self control.”

“So a boat?” she asked, changing the subject. Heat rose in her body. Heat that had nothing to do with the sun, which was climbing higher in the azure sky.
