  Rogue Seduction

Summer Grussell’s brother vanished six months ago. When some others are sent to help the rogue pack, she goes, too, to look for him. Christopher Blake and Roland Ellis take one look at Summer and wonder if she’s the mate they’ve been looking and hoping for. Chris, Roland, and six other men left their pack in Idaho after their Alpha refused to accept the Supreme Alpha’s ruling that ménages and interspecies marriages were permitted. They’ve moved to the Nevada desert and established a new community. Now all they need is to find a way to survive and then they can look for mates. Alpha Wolfric is going to help them settle in the desert, and maybe, just maybe, Summer will be their woman. If she can forgive them for accidently kidnapping Jaz. And if they can adjust to the heat. And then there’s the tiny problem of how to earn a living in the middle of nowhere.

  Chapter One

  “Sit down, Tony.”

“Don’t be such an idiot, Boyd. You’ll get arrested.”

Summer flicked her gaze up into the rearview mirror of the school bus in time to see two boys with their naked asses pressed to the windows as a Jeep passed them on the track. A lot of screaming was coming from the very back of the bus, where a fight seemed to have broken out.

So many kids were out of their seats and moving around now that the bus was rocking, and Summer eased off the accelerator, reached for her microphone, and ordered, “Everyone sit down please.”

No one paid her any attention. In fact, the shouting and screaming got louder. She slowed the big bus even further and spoke again. “People, get back in your seats right now, thank you.”

  No response.

Summer Grussell loved machinery, cars, trucks, anything with wheels. Even as a child she’d been more interested in playing with her older brother Kevin’s Tonka trucks than with her own Barbie dolls. So when he’d said he was visiting a friend for a few weeks, she’d been happy to take over his job driving the school bus.

That had been six months ago. He still hadn’t returned, and right now she was no longer prepared to put up with the job. The kids had always been loud, unruly, and disrespectful, but this she was not prepared to tolerate. Even if it got her terminated.

She stopped the bus in the middle of the narrow two-lane road and turned the engine, and therefore the air-conditioning, off. Then she stood up and starting taking pictures on her cell phone. The first ones she took were images of the naked rear ends of the two older teenage boys who seemed to consider mooning any passing traffic, or the other kids on the bus, funny.

She sent the pictures to her own e-mail account immediately, in case one of the kids took the cell phone from her, and snapped several pictures of a group of middle school children standing in the center of the bus, pushing and shoving each other. The rules were that all children must remain seated until the bus stopped. Technically it had just stopped, but no one seemed to have noticed that yet.

She sent those pictures to her e-mail as well. Finally she snapped a few general crowd shots in case the faces of the misbehaving ones weren’t clear. It’d be obvious who they were by process of elimination. She’d scarcely e-mailed them to herself when a couple of older boys yelled out, “Why the fuck have you stopped?”

She hit record on her phone just in time to catch the swear word, and grinned, sitting back in her seat but not answering. She took the precaution of putting her cell phone down her bra, still leaving it recording. There’d be no more pictures of course, but at least there’d be sound if one of those teenagers hit her, and anyone who took it from her would be up on charges of assault.

“Hey, bitch, driver, I’m talking to you. Why aren’t you driving the damn bus?”

Summer continued to wait, hoping her cell phone caught the noise gradually abating. Only when the bus was comparatively quiet did she speak again. “Ladies and gentlemen, if you care to be seated, and if those older gentlemen put their pants back on, then the bus will continue to take you home.”

  She watched in t
he rearview mirror. There was some soft snickering and giggling, and most of the fighting middle school students had returned to their seats, but a group of older boys had not. Right then the two ringleaders turned around and mooned her.

Damn. I wish I’d gotten that on my phone.

Maybe some of the other students would have taken a picture.

The two boys swaggered up to the front of the bus. Fortunately they’d pulled their jeans up so she wasn’t forced to see their genitals.

One of them leaned right over into her personal space and said, “Who do you think you are, bitch? Drive the fucking bus.”

“Yeah,” added the other one helpfully.

“It will be my pleasure to drive the bus, once you’re all seated. Health and safety regulations require all students to be in their seats when the bus is moving.”

“I don’t want to sit down, and you can’t make me.”

The boy clearly expected her to argue with him, but Summer looked through him, to the rest of the passengers. Some of the other boys were coming forward now. She was starting to feel a little nervous. They were only teenagers, but there were half a dozen of them, and they would be more than a match for a sole woman. Thank God her phone was taping this altercation.

“If you aren’t going to drive, we’ll throw you off the bus and drive it ourselves,” said the boy.

“Yeah,” said his friend, who was definitely just a follower.

“Do you have a driver’s license for buses?” she asked.

“He hasn’t even gotten his license to drive a car yet. Sit down and stop being a fucking retard, Boyd. It’s hot, and I want the air conditioning back on, and I want to go home.” The speaker was an older girl, and several other people echoed her comment. Two of the boys standing in the aisle disappeared back to their seats.

As if the girl had unleashed their voices, a chorus of other children called out, saying they were hot, too, and telling the boys to sit down and be quiet.

“I still say we throw the bitch off the bus and drive it ourselves,” argued Boyd.

  “Yeah.”

Summer was beginning to think she might have to fight them off. She absolutely couldn’t let them attempt to drive the bus and risk the lives of thirty other children just to stroke their testosterone-fueled male egos. But fortunately the older girl who’d spoken first stood up in her seat holding her cell phone in the air.

“I’ve pressed 9-1-1. On the count of three I’m pressing call. One… two—”

Everyone in the aisle raced for their seats except Boyd and his echo. But the follower did show a modicum of sense. He tapped Boyd’s arm and said, “Um. Boyd?”

There was dead silence in the bus, and then Boyd turned to the girl. “I’ll get you for this, bitch. Don’t think I won’t.” Then he turned and went back to his seat.

When Summer was certain everyone was seated, she lifted a shaking hand and turned the engine back on. Only when she was sure the students planned to remain in their seats did she reach into her bra and stop her cell phone recording.

The first thing she did when she arrived home that night was e-mail her resignation to the school board. Attached to it were all the pictures and audio from her cell phone.

She wasn’t afraid of Boyd. Bullies were generally cowards. She was prepared to speak against him in court if necessary, although it was unlikely to come to that. Likely the school principal would suggest it was time for him to leave school, though. Here, in the middle of the Nevada desert, it wasn’t uncommon for kids to leave before graduating.

Summer’s body was a fizzing mass of nerves. She’d thought driving the school bus would be fun. And mostly it was. The kids weren’t angels, and the noise level was always well above comfortable, but hey, they were just kids. But fucking hell. She’d never expected one of the students to be that vile and vicious. Either Boyd had suffered a really bad day, or else he was turning into a nasty piece of work.

Whatever the reason, she wasn’t willing to be with him on a bus again anytime soon.

The good news was the school year was due to finish in only three weeks so they wouldn’t have to find a stand-in driver for long.

Summer was a werewolf shape-shifter, and her pack, the Nevada Desert Werewolf Pack, was holding their first pack gathering for many years very soon. It was a couple of hundred miles across the desert near Towler, where the Alpha had his home. That would get Summer and her family right out of their home area for a week as well. That was necessary. She was still edgy and a little nervous. The break would be wonderful.

  * * * *

It had been seven months since Christopher Blake, Roland Ellis, and a handful of other men in their twenties and thirties had left their pack in Idaho and traveled south into the Nevada desert in the hopes of making a new life for themselves. Their Alpha was an old man, already in the beginning stages of dementia, and none of the leaders of the pack would give the man an honorable retirement and do what needed to be done for the pack’s survival.

“Sir, you have eleven men unable to find a mate. Without women this pack will die. The Supreme Alpha has said interspecies matings are permitted,” argued Chris, holding on to his temper and keeping his voice low and polite.

“The Supreme would never have said that. Those e-mails are lies and hoaxes. What use are humans? Their offspring will never be able to shape-shift, and the pack will still die,” said the old man fiercely.

“Isn’t it better to have half the children able to transform and the pack still viable?” asked Roland.

“There’s no guarantee any of the offspring will be wolves. I don’t want to hear any more about it. We’re perfectly all right as we are.”

The old man sat down and waved his hand to dismiss the young men from his home.

Chris stood his ground. “If you won’t permit us to find a mate, we’ll leave and find one elsewhere,” said Chris firmly.

“Rubbish. Where will you go? The only safe place to live is here on our ancestral lands.”

“We’ll find a new place, make a new home,” said Roland.

“Nonsense. Go away. You boys don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“We need to make some plans. Come to my house,” said Chris after they left the Alpha.

Three of the men hadn’t been prepared to disobey the Alpha, even though it was obvious he was no longer able to make the best decisions for his people. The other eight had sat in Chris’s living room, hammering out a plan. Then each had left, with a task to complete before they met again the following day.

They’d found an area of desert in Nevada that appeared uninhabited, but with signs that people had lived there long ago, so they assumed there’d be water and the means of survival in that area.

Through Internet searches, they’d learned of a federal agency working with the Office of National Drug Control Policy, which was offering a two million dollar reward to any person or group who brought them information that would lead to the arrest of a very active drug cartel.

Together they’d conceived a plan to earn that reward. Two million dollars, invested wisely, would keep them all for the rest of their lives and enable them to find and woo women and establish homes and families.

It took them less than a month to travel to Nevada and take over the old, disused settlement and make it their home. Then they bought and gathered together a large quantity of guns, which they planned to swap for drugs with the cartel.

Wanting to keep their base secret, and to negotiate with the cartel at a distance, they buried the guns in a disused graveyard. It was an hour’s drive away from their new home, but the drug cartel was warier than they’d expected, and their plans went awry. They even ended up kidnapping an innocent bystander, although they let her go unhurt.

The only good thing that came of their adventure was being contacted by the Alpha of the Nevada Desert Werewolf Pack, who promised to help them become self-sufficient. He said he’d known of their presence for some months, although they had no idea
how he’d found out about them. They were very careful to buy all their food and supplies in distant towns and not in huge quantities.

Chris and Roland looked at the two rooms they’d prepared for the Nevada pack guests. Wolfric, the Nevada pack’s Alpha, was sending them some advisors in the next few days. They didn’t have much in the way of guest facilities. They and their pack brothers had renovated the three least damaged buildings in this place to make homes for themselves. But they’d done it by scavenging whatever they needed from the most tumbledown buildings.

They were making a small profit by reselling the guns a few at a time, but it wasn’t exactly a livelihood.

Still, the little settlement at Roxburgh was looking clean, tidy, and lived in. The three renovated houses all had small vegetable gardens out back, with plants already growing nicely in them. The well gave ample clean water, and they’d piped it into each of their three homes, although they still had to pump it up into a holding tank every few days.

Kevin, a man who’d joined them shortly after they’d arrived, was a genius with machinery, and he’d organized all the pump and water storage details. All they’d had to do was dig where he said and work as his laborers.

At the moment they were managing okay, but Chris was very aware they hadn’t yet begun their search for mates, and the men needed mates and a source of income. He’d pinned all his hopes to the people the Nevada Pack’s Alpha was sending them. Once they’d sorted out how to earn a living, they could begin searching for mates.

The eight of them were agreed on forming ménages to share their women. That was something else the Supreme Alpha had approved, and it made a lot of sense to Chris. Besides, finding four women who were prepared to mate wolves should be a hell of a lot easier than finding eight. Although if they found a woman each, he wouldn’t be complaining.
