The Highland Secret Agent

He chuckled. “Mm. I know, dear. But I worry for you.”
“Well, don't,” she said firmly. “I want your love.”
“Good,” He whispered as he stroked his hands lovingly down her back.
They made love and then lay back, looking out across the room. The place was tapestry filled and lovely, unrecognizable as the plain, cool space it had been a few months before. It was their castle now and their home. Ambeal had wasted no time in making it as lovely as she wished it to be. As they both did. It was their place, the home for their togetherness.
“I am glad things worked out as they did.”
“Mm,” Alf agreed. He took her hand and held it gently, his fingers squeezing her palm.
“I think you will be a just thane,” she murmured, kissing his brow. “Wise and fair and generous and...”
He laughed as she covered his face with her kisses and, laughing extricated himself from her attentions.
“And you, my dear, are the best thane's wife in this world. Honorable and thoughtful and inspiring. A warrior heart and a scholar's wisdom.” He stroked her hair. “To say nothing of a beauty that inspires the soul.”
She laughed at him, though her heart swelled with his words of praise.
“Oh, Alf,” she sighed. “I do love you so much.”
He smiled. “I love you too. I'm so content.”
“Me too.”
They lay together in the warmth of the bed. It was late morning, the sun high in the sky, shimmering on the pine needles outside in the woodlands. However, in here, it was wonderful and relaxed, at perfect peace.
“My dear,” Alf said, stretching as he embraced her. “We have some plans to make.”
“We do,” she nodded. “But which plans do you mean?”
“Well, we need a name,” he commented, sliding caring fingers to the soft rise of her abdomen.
“He does,” she commented with a wry smile. “Or she.”
“Indeed,” Alf commented. “I think that we could use Emelia for her if she is a girl.”
“My mother's name?” Ambeal felt her throat tighten with the emotion of that.
“Yes,” Alf whispered.
“Thank you, Alf,” Ambeal said gently. “Yes. That is perfect. I would cherish that.”
Alf nodded.
They lay quietly a while.
“And if a son?” Alf asked softly.
“I know,” Ambeal said promptly. “Alf.”
Alf chuckled, his eyes crinkling with a smile. “Oh, Ambeal. Would you?”
“Yes,” Ambeal said insistently. “Of course.”
He chuckled. “Oh, my dear. I do love you.”
“I love you, too,” Ambeal said gently.
She lay back and closed her eyes. The sun was playing through the window, making gentle shadows that danced on the carpet. She was warm in Alf's arms and the sun shone on her eyelids.
The way things had resolved was perfect, unexpected and incredible. She and Alf had become the thane and his wife, her father agreeing that, in light of the wrong he had done, he should retire to their fort on the western border. There, he and Blaine could put themselves to use holding the borders in the west free of incursions. The thane of Inverglass was well pleased with the choice and he and Alf were in a new agreement together. Their border to the south was held by Dunkeld and their friendly relations there. Everything had worked out perfectly.
Because life is simple, when you live by the rules of love. Those rules, too, are simple. To follow your heart and to trust it, for it knows the way.
