An SUV came barreling down the road and pulled into the driveway.
“Uncle Evan. Uncle Everett. Uncle Ethan,” Miracle screamed and ran down the steps into the arms of Evan. She made sure to hug each of them before grabbing Everett’s hand. “Come play Barbies with me, Uncle Everett.”
He smiled down at her. “For sure, princess. I’m thinking I’ll be the brunette Barbie today.”
She nodded up at him. “Okay. I like her. She’s pretty. She has eyes like my daddy.”
I laughed and shook my head at our daughter. “You called all of them?”
Brett smiled and shrugged. “I knew you would want them all together when the baby is born. I figured it would be easier. And Everett is also the only one that will play Barbies with Miracle.”
“That’s because he lost his dick somewhere,” Evan teased, clapping a hand on Everett’s shoulder.
“What’s a dick?” Miracle asked, pausing at the doorway.
“Something that boys have,” I explained, glaring at Evan.
“Oh.” Her eyes brightened. “Like Ken. Except his is plastic. I wonder if plastic dicks are real,” she said, pulling Everett into the house.
We all laughed.
“I can’t believe you,” I scolded Evan even though it was pretty funny. Only our child.
Evan only chuckled and headed into the house with Ethan following him. “Edward, don’t stick that in your mouth,” I heard Ethan yell.
I smiled as Brett sat beside me, placing my overnight bag in front of him. He kissed my forehead. “I love this. Having children. The unpredictably of them. The things they randomly say or do, it’s fucking amazing.”
I laughed. “It is.”
“Since being told that we couldn’t have one baby and now we have our third on the way, I gave up and decided to listen to my instincts instead.”
“Well…” I sat forward. “So far your instincts have played out correctly.”
He rubbed my lower back. “I have a feeling that this one is another boy.”
“I’m fine with that.”
“Can we name him Patrick if that is the case?”
I looked up at him. Knowing that was his father’s name, I nodded. “Of course.”
He swallowed hard and placed a soft peck on my lips. “Thank you. For everything. For just helping me be a better person.”
“Thank you for our children and thank you for being you,” I whispered against his mouth.
“I don’t think things could get more perfect.”
I smiled. “I agree, and that includes you.”
His cheeks reddened, his blue eyes boring into mine. “I’ve become perfected by you.”
Knowing what he had been through as an individual and what we had gone through as a couple, things couldn’t be more perfect.
Life would always throw hurdles at us but as long as we were one, we could make it through anything. We were a unit. 100/100. Not 50/50.
Brett MacLean was my one. My only. He was perfect for me. I wouldn’t change him for anything but help him heal. The darkness inside Brett scared me at first although I was drawn to him. I realized that I never really knew him. The true him. But forgiving him, for his sins, for his anger and aggression, his dark part of himself that he had tried so hard to keep from me, I fell in love with him more. No more nightmares. No more demons from his past. He could live free. The once broken boy was now healed as a man. Everyone that had touched his life in the past eleven years had a big impact on his growth. But seeing him with our children, knowing he was determined to give them a better childhood than he had, that was what made him a stronger man, a better person.
A true warrior. He was a survivor.
Brett thanked me every day but I knew it wasn’t just me that had a part in it.
It was all of us.
