Amelia tapped Cale on the shoulder. "Of course you should tell me. That's wonderful news. I'm so happy for him. He's really cut himself out a life here, hasn't he?"
"Yeah, I think he's almost as happy as me." Cale smiled.
"Almost huh?" She teased him.
"Lucy's a nice girl, and so pretty too." Amelia added.
"I'm sure glad he finished the other rooms on the house for us. This winter will be very nice. Hodge and Sarah have a room, Mark has a room and we have a room."
"Yeah, me too, but…Cale I hate to tell you this, it still isn't big enough." Amelia complained in a teasing manner.
"Not big enough. How big do you want this house to be, woman?"
She smiled knowingly at him, "Big enough for our children, too!"
"Well, yeah, but there is no rush on that…" He commented, digging in the dirt with a stick as he spoke.
"Oh I don't know. In about six and a half months we are going to have another wee one around here." She said quietly.
Cale didn't respond at first. But then the stick stopped and he turned to look at her. "You mean…you are with child?"
"'Fraid so, honey." She giggled.
"My God! This is wonderful. Oh…I got to get busy, and I need to talk to Mark about making a room for the baby and…"
"Slow down, you have six and half months. No rush, darling."
He put his arm around her and brought her closer. He kissed her so long she had to break it to breathe.
"I'm so happy!" He cried, his face red, and his eyes shining into hers.
"I'm so glad you are happy!" She smiled into his face.
"Happy! My God…nothing could make me happier."
Amelia studied her husband a long moment. "Nothing…"
"Nothing…"
"Then you don't want to read the letter that came for you yesterday?" Amelia asked.
"Letter? From who?" Cale asked astonished.
"Here, why don't you read it." She handed it to him and smiled.
Cale opened it and began reading.
Dear Cale
I'm sorry I haven't written in so long, but I've finished my studies and opened a law business here in Philadelphia. I couldn't be happier. But since it's been so long I wanted to write and tell you that I'm coming for a visit in October. Hope you'll be home and glad to see me. I can hardly wait. It's been way too long. I've just married the most marvelous girl and can't wait for you to meet her.
I wanted to let you know that Jimmy is all right too. I got a short note from him not long ago that he had found gold and was opening some kind of gambling house in San Francisco. He's happy and he isn't married. Imagine that. Can't wait to see you again. It's been way too long. Hope you are well. See you in October.
Love you Brother
Jacob
"
Cale finished the letter and sat very still for a long moment. Amelia didn't know what to think until he looked up and saw a tear roll down his cheek. He looked over at Amelia and tried to smile.
"I think this is one of the best days of my life!"
She hugged him and they played with Amy on the porch until Sarah came to get her. As he rose he pulled Amelia close to him and sighed. He kissed her tenderly on the lips and stared into her beautiful brown eyes. "A baby!"
"Yes, the first of many!" She laughed.
"God, I hope so!" He pulled her against him and kissed her tenderly. "With Dolby in prison until he's an old man, the baby on the way, my brother coming home and Iron Kettle living peacefully, I couldn't be happier!"
Sarah and Hodge came out on the porch and watched them, holding their child in their arms. Sarah smiled, and Hodge kissed his little Amy.
Amelia looked out along the fields and the barn and smiled. "I never thought I'd belong anywhere again, Cale!"
"You're home Amelia, you are finally home! And we have the rest of our lives to make a good home here."
She smiled, kissing him on the jaw and held on to the man that had safely brought her home, her husband, and the love of her life, Cale Matthews!
