by James Tayler

“I’m not drunk and I want you to know that the kiss meant more to me than anything. I think that your son is phenomenal and that his bravery has not gone unnoticed. You probably don’t even know half of the things that he has done for those that need him more than life itself. He wants to keep you safe and to tell you some of the harrowing ordeals that he has gone through would only make you worry needlessly. I would really like to go on several dates with him with each one ending up with us in some kind of lip lock.”

“I can see from the cross around your neck that you are very religious. I would hope that you would see that you were not the kind of girl that should associate with my son. Please leave and I really don’t want to see your face ever again.” She was ushering me over to the door and that was when I saw the clock and then the building rocked with the first plane slamming into one of the towers.

She ran towards the window and I went to join her with my head craning to the sky to see the black formation of smoke streaming into the clouds.

“We interrupt this news broadcast. There appears to be a plane accident that has left the tower on fire. First responders are moving into the scene as we speak. At present, we do not know anything more than what we have already reported.” I rushed towards the door, knowing that in the next few minutes that the second tower would be struck. That would two attacks of four on the United States.

I ran towards the stairs, knowing that I was going to go and find Jasper and make sure that he was all right. I felt like I was running in quicksand. I ran into hope in the lab.

“Amazingly, you have been gone for over an hour this time.” I didn’t have time to tell her what happened, as I rushed out of there and over to the library to do some necessary research. I gasped out loud at seeing his name written in bold letters, as one that had sacrificed his life for the good of the many.

I found myself wandering the streets and bumping into a man that seemed familiar. “I can’t believe it. We haven’t seen each other in years and now it appears that we were meant to meet again.” I was trying to figure out his name and then it came to me in a flash of light

“Lionel… I think that you and I should have a discussion.” I was through playing games and walking around on eggshells to make everybody happy was not something that I was willing to do anymore. “I’m going to come out and say that I want you. I didn’t want to ruin what you had with your girlfriend, but I’ve heard through the Grapevine that she’s not exactly in the picture anymore.

We went to a nearby park and sat there for hours chatting. By the time the day had gotten past us, I realized that I was falling for a man that I had feelings for a long time ago. My grief for Jasper was now being replaced by sheer joy of finding the one that got away. It would be interesting to tell my fellow scientists what happened and see what their reaction would be. I never thought in a million years that I would find love. I thought that Hope and Sam were anomalies, but apparently I was meant to do something similar. I wasn’t sure what this meant for my future, but I was hoping that my sister Kayla would find her happily ever after. I was going to convince her that she should go next and I doubt that I would have to coax her.

The first kiss that I had with Lionel was mind blowing and we didn’t stop, until we had to pull away from each other. I was going to join him in church on Sunday and listen to the sermon of Father Jacobs. We had the same love for the lord that we had for each other. I would forever be indebted to Jasper for everything that he did for me. Life was a mystery and if you don’t stop and smell the roses then you could miss it in the blink of an eye.

  THE END
