by C. L. Roman

Wiping her hands on her dress, Danae stepped back, turned away and was sick into a bed of seaweed.

Fomor stood and flexed, giving one experimental downward sweep of his wings. Satisfied, he rolled his shoulders and his wings slipped back and down, fading into their accustomed tattoo. He walked over and took Danae, shaking and pale, into his arms.

She hugged him fiercely and together they took in their surroundings. The cliffs towered over the beach, their surface covered with thousands of small holes from which a multitude of seabirds flung themselves into the salt air.

  “Where are we?” she asked.

“Earth, but years later, I think, than when we left.”

  “And the others?”

He shook his head. “I don’t know, love.”

She swallowed and her eyes were bright with unshed tears as she clung to him. Danae cleared her throat. “Well then. I suppose there’s only one thing to say.”

He eyed her, one brow quirked high and a half smile on his lips. “And that is…”

She clutched his hand tight and laid her other palm over the warm rise of her belly. “Welcome home.”

  Sacrifice

Escaping a global catastrophe, angel-human hybrid, Shahara, lands safely in Babylon with her beloved Volot, an angel with a sacred mission. But the victory is a hollow one, for the world she knew has been obliterated. Battered by the loss of her family and the denial of her most cherished dreams, Shahara’s new life begins to disintegrate as she is lured by promises of power and fulfillment into the violent, blood-soaked ambitions of a ruthless enemy. With her marriage shattered and countless lives hanging in the balance, Shahara must make a devastating choice. Can she survive her decision, or will victory require the ultimate sacrifice? By turns romantic, suspenseful and terrifying, this epic fantasy treads the knife edge of human frailty and superhuman courage.

  Earth and Fire

In Earth and Fire, a witch must face her greatest challenge to save her warlock. While trying to temper justice with mercy, she passes an unanticipated burden on to her descendants. Three generations later, a foul-mouthed enchanted bottle, a fledgling romance and a conniving succubus collide in a series of confrontations to produce a shattering conclusion.

In these and other stories, the characters in this collection ignore the truth at their peril. Physical bodies and eternal destinies are altered. Vengeance is plotted and love is found. Whether they are witches, pixies, bards or con-men, everyone bends to the law of unintended consequences.

  Dedication:

This book is dedicated to the two most influential men in my life – my husband and my father. Dad, you taught me there was nothing I couldn’t do if I put my mind to it and was willing to give my best effort. Vic, you made me believe my Dad’s words. Your belief made it possible for me to dream dreams and write down my visions. I love you both. Thank you.

  Acknowledgements:

This book would never have happened without the persistent support and encouragement of many friends. To my beloved S.P.s who put up with my idiosyncrasies and insisted on making the work better and especially to my daughters Rai and Erika, who believed when I did not, I say thank you. You are the candle on my desk in the midnight hours and I will be forever grateful for your light.
