“As ready as I’ll ever be, but I know we’ve got this. Look at how well we’ve done with Vi. She’s such a good kid.”

“That means this baby will probably be the opposite,” she grumbled, resting her head on my shoulder.

“Possibly, but I doubt it. You’re the best mom.” I kissed the top of her head and hugged her closer.

“Aww,” she looked up at me with more tears in her eyes, “you’re the best dad. I always knew you would be.”

“Alright, we’re here. We’ll clean up the kitchen.” Jax winked at me and then smiled softly at Prue. “Violet’s in good hands. If you need anything else, call or text us. We’re on call.”

“Thank you, Jax. I don’t know what we’d do without you guys.” Prue teared up even more.

“That’s what friends are for. We’ll expect the same when we have a baby.”

  “Oh?” Prue asked curiously.

“Someday, hopefully soon,” Gabi interjected. “Do you need anything else before you go?”

“No, we have the car seat installed and Holden got my bag. Pray for a fast, but with drugs, delivery.”

“We’ll do that.” Gabi hugged Prue and then me. “Get out of here before you end up having the baby at home.

“On it.” I wrapped my arm around Prue and helped her out to the car.

Luckily, the hospital wasn’t too far from us. I wasn’t sure if Prue would have stayed in her seat if it had taken any longer. With each contraction getting worse, she squeezed my hand to the point I was afraid I’d wreck her SUV. Once the hospital came into sight, her grip immediately loosened.

“Holden,” she stopped me as she stepped out of the vehicle with a hand to my arm, “I love you, and I’m sorry if I’m a tyrant for the next twenty-four hours.”

“I love you too.” I leaned down and kissed her until I felt her relax in my arms. “What do you say we get this show on the road?”

“I’d say I already want to smack you. It’s not a show. If I could, it would only take a minute, then bam, the baby’s born.”

“Sorry.” I kissed her lips again softly. “Let’s get you inside. Maybe they’ll put you in next to Alex.”

“Oh my god, I can’t believe we might have our babies on the same day. Gabi better hurry up and get pregnant so we can all have kids around the same age.”

“I’ll be sure to let her know,” I shook my head as I helped her walk into the hospital.

Twelve very long hours later, our son, Milo, was born, and as Prue rested, exhausted from the long process, I snuck out of the room to call Jax and see how Violet was doing.

“Hey man, got good news?” Jax answered.

“The best. Milo was born at six-forty-two weighing in at seven pounds two ounces and twenty-three inches long.”

Jax whistled and relayed the information to Gabi.

“How’s Vi doing?” She’d been fine all the other times I’d called, but I knew she was anxious to see her brother.

“She’s good. We’ve been wearing her out.”

“Do you think you could keep her for the night? It’s too late for her to visit, and I’d like to stay here with Prue.”

“No problem. I’ll tell her we’ll go visit first thing in the morning.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Don’t tell her that, or she’ll be waking you up at three in the morning asking you to take her.”

“Thanks for the heads up. Congrats man.”

“Thanks, man. For everything. I should get back in there. Call me if you need me to come home.”

“We’ve got it all under control. We’ll see you tomorrow.”

Heading back to Prue’s room, I spotted Luke outside Alex’s room. He was putting his phone in his pocket when I reached him. He looked as exhausted as Prue with dark circles under his eyes, and his hair looked as if he’d run his hand through it a few hundred times. He was a mellow dude, but when the love of your life was in pain and screaming, it could get to the best of any of us.

“You doing okay?” I asked, patting him on the back.

“Yeah, just tired. With Alex being a week overdue, she hasn’t been sleeping much and neither have I. How about you?”

“I got more sleep than you, but yeah, it’s exhausting. It’s worth it though. The baby okay? I know Alex has been worried.”

“Everyone’s okay. Alex had a miscarriage years ago, and Mason tried to come early, so she’s high risk. Maybe after this one, she won’t be.” He shrugged.

“Do you think you’ll have more?” I was pretty sure Prue was done after all the threats she’d made during the delivery.

“If I can convince her.” He grinned. “I say we get some rest, but you know the deal.”

“Yeah, sleep when you can. It’s going to be rough for a while, and if you were any other man, I’d tell you to help Alex out, but I know you’ll do more than your fair share.”

“Thanks, man.” He slapped me on the back. “That means a lot coming from you. I’ll be next door if you need anything.”

“Same goes for you. It’s pretty awesome our kids were born on the same day.”

“Totally fucking awesome,” he said a little too loudly for the hospital halls. We were both cracking up as we separated and walked into our respective rooms.

“Hey,” Prue greeted me, holding her hand out to me.

I went to her. I always went to her. She was my orbit, and nothing could keep me away. “Fuck, Prue, I’m sorry if I woke you.”

“Don’t worry, you didn’t. Come get into bed with me.” She patted the bed with a tiny amount of space available, but I’d make it work.

Wrapping my arms around her, Prue rested her head on my chest. One hand, like always, tracing the tattoos on my arms.

“I’m real proud of you, baby.” I kissed the top of her head. “Thank you for giving me a family. Not only our children, who are the most beautiful kids in the world by the way, but also our friends.”

She yawned and closed her eyes. Her arm slipped down to my waist to hold me close as she did every night. “We’re blessed.”

  That we were.

The first time I rode into Fairlane, I couldn’t see why Prue had moved here, but now I wouldn’t go anywhere else. We had the best friends anyone could ask for. Our Fairlane gang had truly become a family to us.
