Mossy Creek: A Maggie Mercer Mystery

by Jill Behe

I suggested that she’d probably had her eye on him at the same time, but since he was such a popular football player, she didn’t think he’d give her the time of day.

I don’t think he got it.

Lancy did agree to the dinner date, though.

I’m not worried. They look good together, and she’s got enough sass, spunk, and ditzy, to keep him on his toes.

Officer Anderson and Chief of Police Madison paid a visit to Plain Jane’s Beauty Parlor, surprising Forsythia Morgan while her Sunday-go-t'-meetin’ hairdo was being arranged. Miss Jane Pratt (who, incidentally, wears those fifties-style cat-glasses on purpose, and ain’t too plain, a t’all) had only gotten half the woman’s rollers in before our two buff law enforcement officers—with at least five of her grapevine members watching—served her with an arrest warrant.

Ricky slapped on the cuffs and quoted her the Miranda Rights. Wyatt had to hold her up—she liked to have fainted dead away from mortification.

To top it all off, she had to spend the night in jail. Seems her lawyer was unavailable, for at least twenty-four hours.

Only time will tell if it made a dent in her proclivity to spread rumors.

Miss Vera-Mae is healing nicely—that big bulky bandage is gone. We’ve seen her in town several times in the last few weeks. She stopped in to make sure we had the new number of the phone she had installed last Thursday.

  Wyatt is very relieved.

My bestie will be home next weekend. Can’t wait! We’ve got a lot of catching up to do. Yeah she may be mad that I didn’t call and bend her ear about it when it was all happening. But, as I said earlier, I couldn’t ruin her vacation.

Chief Madison and I have another official date lined up. Actually, we’ve been seeing each other quite often since our ‘first date,’ and not just at work. Even without Forsythia, the grapevine is hard at work speculating about what’s going on with us.

  We’re just fine, thank you.

Speaking of…. I gotta cut this short, he’s waiting. He wants to go over to Wal-Mart and look at sheets. I don’t know if that’s bed sheets or baking sheets.

  Who cares?

It’s been fun. Hope y’all enjoyed your stay. If you ever get bored, come on back and see us again.

  You take care now.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jill is the eldest of four children born to Christian parents in East Central Pennsylvania. It took a while, but the rebel within finally broke free. After shocking family and friends by enlisting in the U.S. Army, then marrying—not much of a shock—birthing three sons, and getting divorced—again, not much of a shock—she's now living in the great State of PA ... at least until the next adventure.

She began writing nonsense stories for her siblings and friends while in grade school, probably from the time she learned cursive. Her writing has improved since then. Thank goodness. With time, maturity, and persistence, Jill continues to hone her craft in a variety of genres.

Taking up the challenge to write outside the box, Jill’s story “How Do You Do It, Mr. Sullivan?” was accepted for the anthology Midnight Movie Creature Feature 2 . She also co-authored "S.P.Q.R.” with Rob M. Miller for the anthology Fifty Shades of Decay . Her newest short, “Whiskers” was accepted for the anthology From Dusk Til Dawn .

Currently, she’s working on the third installment of her “Mossy Creek” trilogy (a cozy romantic-suspense), and other projects.
