  My smile widened. “Come on, Mom. Lauren told me everything, even about Billy’s job.”

  She was quiet a moment, then said, “Kristen, I just–”

  “It’s ok, Mom. You were right about everything. Jamie and I are a perfect fit.”

  “I guess you’re going to miss him.”

  “Yes and no.”

  “What do you mean?”

  “I’ll miss seeing him every day, but we’ll always be together in our hearts until we meet again.”

  Her smile faded. “Kristen, sometimes summer romances don’t pan out.”

  “This isn’t like that.”

  “You say that now, but–”

  “He asked me to marry him.”

  She stared at me, and the SUV drifted towards the edge of the road.

  “Mom, watch where you’re driving.”

  She looked back at the road and jerked the wheel, setting us back on the proper course. “He asked you to marry him?”

  “Yes.”

  “And what did you say?”

  I held up the hand I’d been hiding. On my ring finger sat a small gold band, with an even smaller diamond chip in it. Mom gaped at it.

  “You’re engaged? Kristen, you’re only eighteen.”

  I shook my head. “No, we’re not engaged.”

  “Then what?”

  “It’s just a promise ring. But Mom, this isn’t a fling. We will be married someday.”

  She nodded and divided her attention between me and the road, considering it for a long moment.

  “You know,” she said, “I believe you.”

  Epilogue

  I stood at the end of our driveway, waiting for the school bus to arrive. My sixteen month old daughter, Clarice, was sitting contently on my hip, gnawing on a pretzel. A buzz of excitement was running through me, and I couldn’t wait to share the news I had just discovered.

  “Bubba?” Clarice said, her lips caked with pretzel debris.

  “Yes, we’re waiting for your brother.”

  “Cool?”

  “That’s right, he’s at school. Pretty soon, you’ll be big enough to go to school too.”

  She smiled at this, showing off more bits of pretzel in her teeth.

  The yellow school bus appeared from around the bend, and I turned Clarice towards it. “Look, your brother’s home.”

  “Bubba!” She tried to squirm out of my arms, but I held her tight until the bus rolled to a stop.

  The bus door opened and my son scampered down the steps, carrying his backpack and wearing a wide grin. I set Clarice down, keeping hold of her hand, and waved goodbye to the bus driver.

  “Hi Josh,” I said, kneeling down and taking him into my free arm for a hug. “How was your second day of Kindergarten?”

  “Great! The teacher brought in a turtle!” He was an amazing little guy, looking so much like his father it was scary.

  “That sounds like fun. Say hello to your sister.”

  He patted his little sister on the head. “Hi sis.”

  “Bubba!”

  I heard the distant sound of a tractor, and said, “Sounds like your father is done with his plowing. Let’s go say hello.”

  We walked hand in hand up the driveway and around the house. By the time we got to the barn, Jamie was pulling the tractor inside. He cut the engine and hopped off, still looking as good as the day I’d met him, almost ten years ago. We shared a smile before he turned his attention to his son.

  “Hey big guy,” he said, lifting the boy into his arms. “How was school?”

  “Fun! We saw a turtle!”

  “Mmm, I love turtle soup.”

  “Dad, that’s gross. You can’t eat a turtle.”

  “Did you meet any pretty girls today?”

  “No!”

  “That’s ok. Better to wait for the right one to come along.” He winked at me.

  “Josh,” I said, “go get out of your good clothes.”

  “And remember to get your chores done before supper,” Jamie added before setting him down.

  “Ok. But some of the other boys at school said they didn’t have to do chores.”

  Jamie leaned down to him. “Well, it sounds to me like they aren’t as lucky as you then. Go on now.”

  Josh turned and headed for the house. “And no snacking before dinner,” I called.

  Jamie picked up Clarice and held her on his hip. “And how are you doing, pretzel breath?”

  “Dada.”

  “That’s right, I’m your daddy. At least that’s what this woman here claims.”

  I swatted his arm. “Don’t say that to her.” He took my hand and we began walking back to the house.

  As we walked by the corral, he stopped and said, “Would you look at that. It’s about time.”

  I followed his gaze and saw that our black stallion, Buck, was mounting Candy, a palomino mare. We walked over to the fence.

  “Must be the pheromones,” I said, causing Jamie to chuckle.

  “Giving you any ideas?” he said, as we watched the animals.

  “Oh yeah,” I replied.

  “Is it the kids’ bedtime yet?”

  I swatted his arm again. “Stop being a horndog and leave your wife alone. You’ve got three kids already.”

  This made him laugh hard, but then he stopped and gave me a curious look.

  “Kristen?”

  “Yes, farmboy?” I was finding it hard to hold in my grin.

  “Last time I checked, which was about thirty seconds ago, we only had two children. What are you trying to tell me?”

  I couldn’t hold it in any longer, and my smile spread across my face. “I’m pregnant.”

  “You sure?”

  I nodded. “I was late, so I took a home pregnancy test. It was a two-pack, so I took both of them. They both were positive.”

  His lips curled up into a wide grin and he put his free arm around me, pulling me tight to him.

  “That’s wonderful,” he said.

  I closed my eyes as my husband held me in his arms. Yes, it was wonderful. Some people would say it was nature taking its course, but I liked to think of it as love. But they could be the same thing.
