The Legend of Alexandros: Belen

“Nope. I guess not. But maybe some other Dragons father can teach you to fly one day. You may have to wait until they teach their own baby to fly first, though.”

“I have to go back to my nest…” said the newborn. “My mother is needing me now…”

The walk back to his nest was filled with sorrow. The green grass from the valley was now meaningless; it did not have the same earlier feeling of wonder. The tall hills and trees that had made him smile only made him cry, as he watched fathers teaching their sons to fly from the top of the trees. When he reached his nest he curled into a ball and drifted off into a deep sleep. He slept for the remainder of the day. That night he stared at the stars.

“What bothers you, my child?” His mother laid her head beside him.

  “Mother…am I special?”

“Of course, you are. Why would you ask such a thing?”

“A dragon baby told me I am not special because I have no father. Why do I not have a father?”

His mother smiled at him. “You indeed do have a father. He lives high in those hilltop caves. He is the clan leader and comes down every now and then to check upon everyone.” His mother pointed to the caves at the top of the hills that wrapped around the valley. “If you wish to see him sooner all you need to do is fly straight over there…he will surely welcome his only son.”

The newborn smiled with a determined look; he went to sleep wrapped in his mother’s tail and slept till the sun rose in the sky.

The morning came quickly, and before his mother woke, the newborn was hard at work learning to fly. He flapped his wings, but could not seem to get the hang of it. Suddenly as he flapped his wings he slowly began to rise off the ground. He flapped and flapped and flapped nonstop, but then saw the baby Dragon with the sapphire eyes giggling to himself. The newborn grew even more determined and launched himself into the air. He soared as high as ever and flew right over the baby Dragon with sapphire eyes—he headed straight to the hilltop caves.

He landed without a sound in front of the cave; his big round purple eyes glared into the cave.

“Father…” he whispered, but no response. “Father…” he whispered again, but still no answer.

The newborn stepped completely into the cave. The darkness of the cave made him shiver as he heard the echo of dripping water. Then, not too deep within the cave, the newborn found his father, sleeping and snoring loudly. All he had wished for was to speak with him, but then a feeling took over. He did not need his father to learn to fly—he had done it all on his own. The newborn backed away slowly as to not disturb his father, and once outside he leaped off the edge and soared throughout the skies. His mother flew into the sky, and together they flew over the valley.

  “Did you meet him?”

  “No, but I saw him.”

“Did you not wish to speak with him, my child?”

  “Nope, not anymore.”

  “Why not?”

The newborn hatchling smiled and glided close to his mother.

“Because mother,” he said lovingly. “…I have you…”
