The Vampire’s Kiss
Page 18
After Valentino was taken into custody, the whole case just blew open. They found evidence linking Valentino to Luc’s murder. His prints were on one of the glasses they’d found in the basement. And they’d found one of Valentino’s hairs in the bedroom near Luc Dubois’s severed head. He’d been the one to decapitate the vampire.
They had Ivy safely tucked away, as well as the virus. Both were secure and out of Valentino’s hands. They had yet to find the terrorists who’d been willing to pay for the virus, but Olena had confidence that eventually Interpol would.
She’d met Cale’s boss, and he seemed like a caring and determined man. Once he found out about Cale and the entire case, he’d assigned ten agents to track down the terrorists.
“Do you need anything?” Gabriel asked.
She smiled. Her boss was a generous soul when he wanted to be. Most of the time he was a taskmaster and a tyrant. “No. I’m okay.”
“Call with any changes.”
“I will.” She paused, then said, “Thank you, Gabriel.”
“You’re welcome. I’m here if you need me.”
She hung up the phone, feeling maudlin. The reality of the situation just seemed to crash in on her.
In two days, Cale could be gone for good. Forever.
And she’d never be able to get him back.
Sighing deeply, she returned to her mundane task of making a salad. She had to eat, and it was something to do. She grabbed the vinaigrette from the refrigerator. When something jabbed her in the gut.
She dropped the salad dressing and rubbed a hand over her belly. Something had changed. Something remarkable.
She whipped around to see Cale, rumpled and disheveled, his hair sticking up every which way, standing in the kitchen doorway. He wore nothing but a pair of black boxer shorts and damn if he didn’t look sexy as hell. Her knees buckled and she nearly collapsed onto the floor.
“I’m hungry. Got anything to eat in here?”
She didn’t hesitate. She crossed the floor and buried herself in the warmth of his body, wrapping her arms tightly around him. Chuckling, he returned the gesture, squeezing her close. He settled his face into her hair and breathed in deeply.
“You smell like ecstasy.”
She laughed and squeezed him tight. “How do you feel?”
“Good. Hungry, though. My stomach’s growling like a bear.”
“You’ll feel that way for a while. You’ll drink and eat but you won’t feel satisfied. Not for a while, anyway.”
“I also have a wicked boner.”
She laughed even harder, very well aware of his erection pressing against her. “That’ll take a while to sate as well.”
“Is that so?” He ran his hands down her back to cup her rear end.
A rush of desire spread through her. It was hot and heavy and ferocious. She’d been waiting so long for him, she could barely contain the passion inside.
With no effort, Cale picked her up and set her down on the kitchen counter. He settled himself in between her legs and ran his tongue along her jawline.
Moaning, she let her head fall back. It hit the cupboard behind her but she didn’t care. Cale was here, alive, and in her arms.
“Mmm, your skin tastes like vanilla. Your smell is intoxicating. My senses are in overdrive. It’s like seeing and smelling and tasting for the first time.” He nuzzled his nose into the crook of her neck just underneath the fall of her hair.
“It doesn’t bother you?”
“What?” He licked the lobe of her ear.
“That you’re a vampire now. Forever.”
He leaned back and looked into her eyes. He smiled. “I’m exactly where I want to be. I’m exactly who I want to be. I love you, Olena. That will never change.” Cupping her face with the palms of his hands, he tilted her head up to meet his lips. He covered her mouth with his, and Olena felt like her heart had exploded. His vampire kiss felt good. And right. And forever.
