The Ancient Spirits of Sedgwick House (Grayson Sherbrooke's Otherworldly Adventures Book 3)

  “Yes,” Miranda said, “I saw.”

“Shall I tell Lord Lyle there is no more curse?”

Miranda lightly touched the lid. “No, I think not. A mystery, leave it all a mystery, Grayson, and a riddle, to pass into the future. I believe it is something Lord Lyle will relish telling all his progeny. Does he have any progeny?”

  EPILOGUE

  End of September 1841

The two carriages rolled away from Sedgwick House, away from Bowness-on-Windemere, the children hanging out the carriage windows, waving to Manu, Mrs. Moon, and Mrs. Minor, who stood waving back at them from the wide front steps.

Oddly, since that singular night when Miranda and Grayson had managed to destroy Sadek using Nefret’s golden cuff, it hadn’t rained a single day. It was as if Manu’s lake gods had recognized their achievement and rewarded them. Manu had given Grayson a long look that morning and slowly nodded his head. “Thank you, Mr. Grayson.” Nothing more, nothing less, and Grayson was afraid to ask him exactly what he meant.

Their final three weeks at Sedgwick House had passed quickly, too quickly for the children. They were brown, healthy as stoats, now chattering like magpies, Barnaby slipping now only rarely into cant since Miranda corrected him, and P.C. punched him.

As Bowness-on-Windemere disappeared behind a bend, he thought again of Nefret and Kiya. He prayed both brother and sister had lived long healthy lives. Imagine, marrying your sister and it was the done thing. Who cared? It was so long ago. Grayson also prayed Kiya had ruled Egypt wisely. He smiled as he lightly touched his fingertips to the sleeve of his white linen shirt, the same linen worn by Nefret millennia before. He picked up Miranda’s hand. He knew they would stand together now, hand in hand, and look into a future not quite clear as yet.

He felt Miranda’s breath warm on his cheek. “This, my dear, has been a month to remember.”

“That’s true,” Barnaby sang out. “No rain for three whole weeks.”

“It’s my birthday in seven days,” Pip said. “I know what I want for my birthday, Papa.”

Grayson thought of a King Charles puppy soon to be born to a neighbor.

Pip poked P.C. and Barnaby, then gave Miranda a big smile.
