There was a contagious excitement in Laura’s voice and Maddie knew she was trying to lift their spirits. It was exactly what they needed to keep the party going and she hoped that Ronnie would be up for it.
“That sounds like fun! Anyone wanna go?” Maddie looked around the table and everyone was nodding yes, even the strange boy that Laura had picked up. She went on, “Who’s got a car here and isn’t too drunk to drive?”
Ronnie raised his hand, “I do and I’m fine, I can drive.”
Chapter Seven
Maddie woke up the next morning with BB shaking her, “Wake up Maddie, wake up, Ronnie’s on the phone.”
“Huh?” she rubbed her eyes blinking, trying to open them against the assault of the morning sun shining through her window.
Morning, she thought, How’d I get here? She didn’t remember much of the previous night after going into the city to see the fireworks.
She stumbled into the kitchen and picked up the phone, “Hello?”
“Hey,” she heard Ronnie’s deep voice, “How ya feeling this morning?”
“I’m not sure yet,” she said, still trying to wake up. “I don’t remember much about last night after we got to the park. How’d we get home?”
He laughed out loud, “Maddie, we had a few more drinks after we got to the park and before I knew it, you slid down to the ground and stopped moving. I thought you’d had a stroke or something, but you were just plain drunk. We picked you up, put you in the car, then came back and dropped you off at the house.”
Lovely! She thought to herself.
“So, I made a fool of myself, is that what you’re saying?”
“Well, not really. You were just having too much fun, that’s all,” he laughed again, apparently thinking that her passing out was humorous.
Very funny!
“So, do you want to go out on the river today? Our boat survived the fire and we’ve got it tied up at the dock while they repair the boathouse. We can take her out if you’re up to it.”
“Let me wake up Ronnie. I’ll call you back, okay? But probably, yeah, sounds like fun.”
She didn’t want to miss going out with him again, but she felt like hell and wasn’t sure if she was going to feel up to it today or not.
“Okay, I’ll wait for your call, I hope you feel better. Bye now.” The loud click, as he hung up, went straight through her head. She shuddered.
Standing there, her head throbbing, she tried to remember the night before, after they got to the park. She must have blacked out, because she couldn’t remember a thing. She remembered everything that led up to them going, especially making love with Ronnie and she wanted a repeat performance, if she could get it. Maybe some hair of the dog would make her feel better.
“Aunt BB?” she screamed down the hall, hoping she could hear her in the next room… the sound of her own voice splitting her head even more, “Ugh… Can you hear me?”
BB came walking down the hall, her flip flops popping against her heels.
“Hey kiddo, glad to see you’re finally up, what’s going on?
“Do you think you could make a pitcher of Silver Fizzes? I’m toast this morning.”
“Hah,” she laughed, snorting, “Well, you’re too young to be getting so drunk, don’t ya think?
“Yeah, but can we please spare the lecture right now? Ronnie wants to take me out on the river today and I want to feel good. Please!” Laura begged her in her sweetest, most hopeful voice.
“Ok, you go ahead and get showered and dressed, I’ll have a pitcher ready when you come out.”
“Oh, thank you, you’re a life saver!” she hugged her aunt and retreated to the bathroom.
As she showered, she felt the sweet soreness in her crotch from the previous night’s love making. She washed away the last remnants of Ronnie, at the same time daydreaming about him as she touched herself. She was on the pill for her seriously painful cramps, so she knew she was safe last night, besides Ronnie had used a condom. She wanted this experience to remain sweet and innocent. Well, as innocent as it could be, after they fucked their brains out. But it was sweet, she thought. She felt Ronnie had changed and had become a kind and sensitive man. He was polite and seemed to care about her. She could sense it.
Tilting her head back and letting the hot water trickle down her back, she continued to reminisce about the night before and was anxious for a repeat performance, or several, before she left for home.
She stepped out of the shower and dried herself. Let’s see, what outfit for the water today? …Maybe that cute blue and white striped surfer shirt with my baggy white shorts and no bra or panties. Not too sexy, but easy to get out of…. Just in case. Bad girl! She knew she and Ronnie would probably make love again today and she could hardly wait!
She continued getting ready, securing her hair with two blue ribbons; creating pigtails on each side of her head… then finished with a touch of lip gloss and a little mascara.
As she walked down the hall to the kitchen, she started to feel a little better, but her head still hurt. A Silver Fizz would be more than welcoming.
BB greeted her in the kitchen, “Feel any better, honey?”
Her love for Maddie was evident and she appreciated BB so much. It had been a long time since she’d had any motherly loving and she missed it terribly. She missed her parents, but tried not to ever think about the horrible way in which she had lost them both at such a young age.
She pushed the thoughts out of her mind, “A bit, but I can’t wait to chase the dog away. “
They both laughed, BB poured her a drink into a martini shaped glass and handed it to her.
“Ah…” the first sip let her know she’d be alright to go out for the day.
“That’s tasty B, you’re the best aunt a kid could have!”
“Well, your Mom wouldn’t have thought so! I don’t think she would have appreciated me letting you get so drunk at your age.”
It was a sore subject for both women, but BB had processed losing her sister better than Maddie had, losing her mom. She felt that old twinge of pain inside again.
BB winked at her knowingly, poured herself a Fizz and then headed out to the patio.
“Coming?” she turned and asked.
“Right behind you,” she said, on the heels of her aunt.
They sat in the hot morning sun on the brightly colored lounges, drinking their Fizzes and enjoying the newness of the day. The phone rang and BB answered the extension sitting on the patio.
“Hello.” she said in that wonderfully, musical BB voice, which made Maddie feel so safe.
“Sure honey, she’s right here…. It’s Laura,” she handed her the phone.
“Hey, I heard I was a party pooper last night, huh?”
“Yup, dead to the world,” she said, laughing.
“We had to drag your ass into the car and dump you off. Luckily BB was still up to receive the damaged goods. She took you off our hands and you wobbled into the house. I’ve never seen you so drunk, ever, how ya feeling this morning?”
She laughed wickedly, knowing Maddie felt like hell, of course.
“Ha ha, real funny, how do you think I feel?”
So, Ms Malone, it’s time,” she said in a sing-song voice.
“Details, girlfriend… what happened last night with you and Ronnie? I’m dying to hear. Did you guys do it? I saw you two slip away and head over to the boathouse.”
“I’m going out on the river with him today and I gotta call him back in a few. Can I get ya later?” she pleaded with Laura, knowing that she’d have to give up the details soon; it was their best friend’s pact ever since they were kids.
“Yeah, sure, alright, but don’t forget.”
“Oh sure, like I could forget,” if she only knew! She’d fill her in with all the juicy details later. She’s gonna die!
She put the phone back in the cradle and finished her Silver Fizz. God, that was tasty. She wondered if she should have another and decided to go
for it. Feeling better was the goal and this was certainly doing the trick. It would also give her a little buzz, before heading out with Ronnie today.
“Hey BB, I’m gonna have one more, how about you?”
“No Thanks honey, I‘ve got some shopping to do today and I don’t need to be stumbling around in the grocery store. It’s a small town you know.”
Oh, that’s right, she thought to herself. Better be careful. You don’t want to be the visiting alcoholic, slut niece of BB Barnes!’
She got up and headed to the kitchen to pour herself another Fizz and heard the phone ring. She looked at the caller ID and saw that it was Ronnie. She knew he must be getting anxious.
“Hi Ronnie, I was just about to call you.”
“Good, I want to pick you up around two this afternoon, is that alright with you?”
“Yeah, that’s fine.”
“I’m gonna grab some snacks and a couple six packs of beer for the trip, pack the cooler, then head over there. Is there anything you want other than that?”
“No, can’t think of anything. I’ll be ready. See ya then.”
“Okay, and don’t forget your bathing suit and a towel.”
She hung up the phone and imaged Ronnie in a tight, white swimming suit with his package bulging. She blushed at her own thoughts.
She filled her glass and headed back out to the patio to wait for him. It would be a while, so she decided to just chill out in the warm sun until he got there. After finishing her second drink, she fell into a half sleep, daydream about the night before.
Her mind played over the events of their love making and she got lost in the passion all over again. She could feel his tongue on her and remembered the delicious sensations that traveled through her body, taking her to new heights. She hoped he would do that again.
She must have gone into a deep sleep for awhile, because when she awoke, BB was no longer on the patio and she could hear her in the house getting ready to do her shopping. By the look of the sun, it was probably around two. Just as that thought chased through her mind, she heard the gravel crunching in the driveway and figured it was Ronnie. She walked over, stopped at the hedge and called out, “Hey! Come around to the back.”
He exited his truck and followed her back to the patio. He had on short khaki pants with an army green tee-shirt. His tan skin and tats glowing in the sun. He looked delicious.
“Hi Maddie,” he said, as he followed her, “You ready to get going?”
“In just a minute Ronnie, there’s still some Silver Fizz in the pitcher in the kitchen. Wanna help me finish it?
She turned her head and smiled at him as she made her way into the house through the sliding glass doors, “I want to feel good when we get out to the river,” she continued.
“Sure. I could use a head start,” he laughed, following behind her.
They went into the kitchen, sparks flying between them. She didn’t dare hug him or even touch him here at the house, knowing she wouldn’t be able to control herself. She could already feel the heat rising between them. She just wanted to have a drink with him and relax for a minute before they left. As close as they were last night, they were still strangers for all intents and purposes and she still wasn’t sure about his intensions. Was he using her for sex while she was there for the summer? She wondered about that. Did he really care about her? And even more concerning, was she using him? And did it even matter? It was her vacation; she could go home and just chalk it up to a sweet memory and a great time. But then again… they were good together… they had a spark and there could be more… much more. Ronnie broke into her thought process.
“How ya feeling now?” he asked, as he poured the remainder of the pitcher into their glasses.
“Better. But I’m so embarrassed. I’m really sorry about passing out last night. I feel like such an idiot!”
“Don’t sweat it… happens to the best of us,” he winked at her, blue eyes twinkling.
They walked back to the patio and sat in the chaise lounges, side by side, sipping their drinks.
“See over there?” he pointed toward the pier, “That’s our boat peeking out from behind the dock over by your aunt’s boathouse.”
She shaded her eyes with her hand, searching the distant dock trying to see the boat, “Oh, okay. I can see it now. God, you were so lucky it didn’t burn up.”
She wondered if her panties were where she left them and giggled to herself. Ronnie turned to her with a question mark playing on his face.
“What’s so funny?”
“Oh, nothing much, it’s just that my panties are stranded on the boat. I didn’t have time to find them; we got outta there so fast. Ha!” she laughed out loud.
“Oh, my God! I hope the workers didn’t find them when they were going over the boat looking for damage.” Ronnie grabbed his chest feigning a heart attack and now they were both laughing.
“Let’s go Maddie… I can’t wait to get you out on the river.”
“I bet you can’t Ronnie Hatcher,” she said teasingly.
He grinned at her, beautiful white teeth outlined by his tanned face. God, he’s gorgeous!
They walked to the dock in silence and Ronnie slipped his hand into hers, entwining their fingers and sending a warm tingly wave throughout her body. She loved the strength of his strong hand and couldn’t wait to be with him again… she was almost feeling safe walking along beside him.
They got to the boat and he helped her in. They stayed top side, while Ronnie set the engine rumbling against the river banks. He took the wheel in his hands, and then backed out away from the dock toward the river straits. The cool breeze danced across their skin as they made their way down the river. It was a beautiful day, not too hot, but just right. She loved the summers there.
“I have a picnic planned on Bateman Island,” he looked over at Maddie who was sitting in the captain’s chair playing with the brim of a skipper's hat she’d found under the seat. She waited for him to tell her more.
“I know a secluded area where we can be alone.”
“Great!”
She put the hat on and turned to face the oncoming breeze as the boat headed further down the river.
She was happy… happy to be out on her beloved river and happy to be with Ronnie. She let all the fear and trepidation that plagued her flow from her like the current of the river.
They pulled up to a small, exclusive beach. Ronnie guided the boat close to the shore and dropped anchor. He pulled a yellow raft out of a cupboard below deck, brought it up top and pulled a latch that made it spring to life. Lowering it into the water he climbed down a small ladder on the outside of the boat, cooler under one arm, and got in. Maddie followed behind with the towels and a large blue blanket.
“There, that should do it,” Ronnie said, as he picked up the oars and rowed toward the island.
They sat on the soft benches in the raft as he pulled them toward the beach. Maddie wondered what he had planned for her once they got settled. She knew she wanted to make love and was pretty sure he did too. Her excitement grew as the raft hit the sand. He jumped out, the water slapping at his legs and pulled it onto the shore. He helped Maddie out and retrieved the other items.
They made their way up to a sandy beach, hidden under some small trees surrounded by beautiful green waxy looking plants that featured red flowers. It looked like a mini paradise. She couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful scene. She could tell Ronnie was a romantic at heart and she liked that about him… in fact, she liked almost everything about him so far. His soft nature, laid back disposition, great attitude and overall nice guy persona. But she wondered if maybe he wasn’t just a little too tame for her. Maybe life had mellowed him too much. Little did she know what lurked underneath all that nice guy stuff.
Ronnie spread the blanket over the sand and set the cooler down, “Madam,” he said, and motioned for her to sit.
She obliged and took her place, half sitting, propping herself up on her elb
ow. He sat down beside her, leaned over and spoke softly, “Maddie, you look lovely today. I know you had a rough night, but you’d never know it. I’m glad you decided to come out with me today. After last night’s disaster and our partying afterwards, I wasn’t sure if you’d be up to it.”
She gave him a sexy smile, “I wanted to be with you again, Ronnie.”
“I’m glad,” he said, baby blues hungrily eyeing her, his desire evident.
“Shall we eat something? Or do you want to just relax for a while.”
