  “Your boss?”

He nods. “I’m likely in a whole lot of trouble. This is definitely not allowed.”

I bite my lip, feeling worried about Ben and worried that this will mean I can’t see him again. “I’m sorry. I hope I didn’t…”

“I crossed the line. Not you.” He helps me into my seat and a minute later, we’re on the road again.

It’s quiet between us as we leave the city, and if I had to guess, his mind is on his job. I wish I knew what to say. I wish I could make it better, but I can’t, so I just sit and stare out the window. We turn up the long driveway to the resort and my heart sinks even further, knowing this is done before it could properly get started.

Pulling up in front of the lobby, he says, “Fuck it.”

  “Excuse me?”

“I said, ‘fuck it.’ You’re worth whatever trouble I get in.” He cuts the engine and grins at me. “Can I pick you up for supper later?”

Relief floods through me. “Yes. I’d love that.”

  “Me, too.”

I flop into bed, exhilarated in spite of my throbbing ankle. Gina is laying on top of her covers, snoring, like I thought she would be. She’ll be shocked when she wakes up and finds out what I’ve been up to. I grin to myself, thinking of Dr. Ben Stone and his lips on mine, his hands on my hips, his enormous erection pressed up against me. I think of his smile, his deep, sexy voice, his thick, dark hair. I think of the way he says my name and the way he listened to me ramble on about myself. I think of the fact that I get to see him in a few hours and as I drift off to sleep, I can’t wipe the smile off my face.

I jog up the five wide wooden steps to my front porch. As I unlock the door, I whistle to myself. I’m happy. For the first time in a long while, I’ve met a girl that I could actually like—someone I can talk to. One night shift can change your life, and in this case, it could be in a very good way. Or a very bad way if I end up being disciplined for what Dr. Harper saw in the parking lot. But, based on the fact that Peter hasn’t been fired yet for all the carrying on he does, I’m hopeful that nothing much will come from our little meeting. But still, getting caught breaking one of the biggest rules in medicine is never a welcome thing.

I think of Lila’s pretty smile, her long, curly brown hair framing her round face, her deep chocolate brown eyes. I think of the smooth sound of her voice and how laughter seems to bubble up from deep within her. I want to make her laugh again. I want to hear her voice. I want to touch her velvety-soft skin.

I strip off my jeans and T-shirt and step out the back door to the covered deck where my hammock swings in the light breeze. This is my favorite place to sleep after a night shift. The sound of the tide and the breeze across my skin does the trick every time. Once I’m settled on it, I stare out at the beach and I watch the waves roll in, waiting for sleep to come. But it doesn’t. All I can do is think of Lila, laying in her bed at that crappy resort. It’s all I can do to keep myself from getting dressed and going to find her so she can lay here with me for the rest of the day. Or the rest of my life. That would be fine too.

Her beautiful face pops into my mind again and my cock fills with longing. I try to ignore it, but I know there’s no way I’ll be able to sleep until I satisfy this need I have. Glad that no one can see onto my deck from the beach below and that the beach is completely empty right now, I slide my hand into my boxer briefs. I stroke and tug on my thick cock, thinking of her laying there on the exam bed. I imagine lifting off that blue dress, and tugging her bikini bottoms off. I can picture her reaching around behind her to undo the strap on her bikini top and her full breasts falling out of it as she flings it off. I’d spread her legs, unzip my pants and free myself so I could thrust myself inside her tight, wet pussy.

I tug and tug on my cock, imagining what she’d feel like, what she’d taste like, what she’d sound like while I fuck her. I come almost immediately in long, thick spurts, releasing the tension of my time with Lila. But, when it’s over, I know that that was just the tip of the iceberg because when it comes to my lust for her, it runs deep, hard, and long.

I wake to the muffled sound of the shower. At first, I think I’m back home in my shoebox apartment in New York, but then I realize I’m on vacation with Gina. When I look at my phone, I see it’s almost two in the afternoon. I’m so groggy and disoriented that it takes me a few seconds to remember what happened last night. A dull throbbing in my ankle jogs my memory quicker than almost anything else could. I close my eyes and see Ben’s face smiling at me. I roll onto my stomach, careful of my leg, and press my face into the pillow, thinking of him and that incredible kiss in the parking lot. I think about how we talked until the sun came up. He added his phone number to my contacts and told me to call him when I wake up. I push my mouth into my pillow and scream into it with excitement.

The bathroom door swings open and I hear Gina’s feet slapping against the tile floor. “What happened to you last night? I must have come back to the room four times but you weren't here. Did you meet someone? Dear God, tell me you met someone and got your bean rubbed.”

I turn over and give her a dirty look. “Gross.”

“But badly needed.” She rubs her wet hair with a towel, then her eyes land on the crutches leaned up against my nightstand.

“Oh my God! You got hurt?”

“I sprained my ankle and spent most of the night at the hospital.” I yawn and stretch and smile, thinking about Ben looking after me.

“And I wasn’t there to help you! I’m the worst friend ever!”

“Nah, it’s okay. You were just busy getting your bean rubbed.” I sit up and grin. “But, it turns out it was better that you weren’t there. If you were, I never would have ended up on the date of a lifetime.”

Gina’s face spreads into a knowing smile “Little Miss Men Aren't For Me met a man!”

“Not just any man. A hot, smart, built one who happened to be the attending physician at the ER last night.”

Sitting on my bed, Gina leans in, giddy with excitement. “You had the date of a lifetime with a hot doctor? I need details, the more explicit the better.”

“Well, I don't have any of those details for you but I might tomorrow. We’re going out again tonight.”

“Wait? If you didn’t do anything R-rated, how could that be considered an epic date?”

“Because he fed me greasy, delicious food and we talked until after seven in the morning…and it was just…” I sigh wistfully. “…So amazing.”

  “You talked?”

I nod, happiness flowing out every pore.

“We talked. And talked and talked and talked. And then at the end of the night, he kissed me. Right up against his Jeep. And we kissed and kissed and kissed until his boss happened to be there and caught us.” My shoulders drop a little when I remember that bit. “But, then he said I was worth whatever trouble he gets into.”

“Wow.” Gina looks dumbstruck. “That…sounds like something more than what I had in mind for you.”

“It was. And it was a hell of a lot more than I had planned for me.”

Showering is a whole big process when you have a sprained anything. I had to take off the bandage and figure out how to get in the tub without putting any weight on my leg, which was not easy. The entire time I was in the shower, I leaned against the wall with one hip to steady myself. By the time I had shampooed and conditioned my hair, my hip ached, as did my right leg that I was balancing on.

I threw on a sundress and a little makeup, then Gina and I made our way down to the open-air poolside restaurant to find something to eat. She helped me through the buffet line by carrying my plate as well as hers. I pointed out what I wanted and told her how much. The funny thing is that I really only did want fruit and yogurt. Something about being in lust makes me not need junk food.

Once we are seated, I take a bite of papaya, tasting the refreshing flavors,
then say, “Okay, should I text him or call him?”

Gina, who is digging into a burger and fries, says, “Text. Definitely.”

I dig around in my beach bag for my phone, then type: Hi Ben. I hope you got some sleep today. Thanks for taking care of me last night. If you’re still up for hanging out, let me know. If something else came up, that’s okay, too. It was wonderful to meet you.

Gina, who is sitting kitty-corner to me at the small table, looks over my shoulder. “Do not send that.”

“Why not? It’s polite and lets him off the hook in case he’s changed his mind.”

“Yeah, that’s the problem. Is he looking for someone polite or someone so hot he can’t wait to get over here?”

I roll my eyes. “What am I supposed to say? Hey, big boy, come on by so we can get naked and sweaty?”

  “That’s not bad, actually.”

“I’m sending it the way it is.”

  “Your funeral.”

  “You’ll see.”

I push send which sets off an explosion of fireworks inside me. I’m suddenly too nervous to eat, but I put my phone face down on the table and pick up my fork and knife anyway. Slicing into a mango wedge, I wait.

When nothing appears by the time we’re done eating, Gina gestures to my phone with her head. “Told you to sex it up.”

“He’s probably just busy or in the shower or something.”

A second later, my phone pings and we both gasp a little. It’s a message from Ben. I definitely want to see you. Do you get seasick at all?

  Me: No.

Him: Good. I’ll pick you up in the lobby in an hour.

  Me: I’ll be there.

  I smile triumphantly at Gina.

She grins back at me. “You were right. You reeled him in with your whole polite angle. But I’m going to make sure you look so good he can’t keep his hands off you.”

An hour later, Gina and I sit on the bench in front of the lobby waiting for Ben. She insisted on meeting him and getting his license plate so she can report him if I go missing.

“You look beautiful.” She nods at her handiwork.

“I kind of do, don’t I?” I say, remembering back to the shock and awe of seeing myself in the mirror when Gina finished with me. My hair is swept off my face in a loose bun, my makeup, for once, is perfect, and she managed to convince me to wear one of her sundresses which is a bit tight around the chest, but because it’s an A-line, it fits over my hips and hides my tummy. It’s sort of a bohemian print with blues and yellows and pinks all in a funky design. The neckline plunges between my girls just the right amount to give Ben the idea I want to get across without coming right out and flashing him.

My heartbeat picks up when I see his Jeep. “Oh, God. Gina, what if this is a horrible idea and I fall for him and he turns out to just be another bastard who uses me?”

Gina takes my hand and squeezes it, looking into my eyes. “Listen, hon, that’s the risk every time a woman opens herself up to a new guy. Trust your gut. With Trey, you kept second-guessing everything and you were right to. If your female Spidey senses start tingling, get out of there and say goodbye, even if your other female senses are tingling just as much.”

I laugh, covering my mouth with one hand. “Thanks. That actually makes a lot of sense.”

“Good stuff.” She turns to look at Ben just as he pulls up in front of us. Squeezing my hand much harder now, she mutters, “Oh, dear Lord, let there be two of them.”

I wave and smile at Ben, then say to her, “Just one, unfortunately, but you’ll do all right. You’ve got a resort full of hotties to test out.”

“Yeah, but none of them look like that.” She glances at him again and licks her lips.

I stand and lift my crutches off the bench, then steady myself on them.

Gina stands too. “Have fun. Be safe.”

  “I have a feeling I will.”

Ben walks around to meet us, dressed in a robin’s egg blue button-up shirt and some light tan pants. His sleeves are rolled up and he looks like a sexy sailor in this getup. He starts by giving me the once over, then a big smile, followed by a kiss right on the lips. Then he pulls back, holds his hand out to Gina and says, “You must be Gina. I’m Ben.”

“Hi, I’m Ben.” She giggles a little then shakes her head to snap herself out of it. "I mean, I'm Gina. You're Ben. Dr. Ben—"

I cut her off before she can embarrass herself any further. “Gina’s here to take a photo of your license plate in case you kidnap me.”

Ben laughs, looking suddenly a bit awkward. “What is it with you two and assuming every man you meet is a murderer or a kidnapper? Do you live in a particularly terrifying neighborhood?”

Gina grins. “Yes. We may need you to move back with us to keep us safe.”

I nudge her arm to remind her who Ben’s here for.

“Right,” she says. “You kids have fun. Don’t keep her out too late. Not unless you’re planning to make an honest woman of her.”

“Gina,” I hiss, giving her a warning look.

“Sorry, I don’t know what’s wrong with me this evening. I need to go have a cold drink.” She gives me a quick kiss on the cheek and turns back to the lobby. “Bye! Nice to meet you, Ben!”

I look up at Ben, who starts to laugh. “Hand me your phone, okay?”

Even though I’m skeptical, I do it. He walks to the back of his Jeep, takes a pic and hands it back to me. “There. You can send it to her since she clearly forgot what her objective was.”

I chuckle, sliding my phone into my bag. “Do you always have that effect on women?”

“More often than not, but honestly, I find the whole thing a little uncomfortable.”

“Must be hard to be so gorgeous.”

“It is.” Wrapping his arms around me, he says, “I’m sure you can relate.”

We make out in front of the lobby for a few minutes until one of the bell boys whistles, reminding us where we are. By the time we’re on the road to our mystery destination, I’m a hot mess.

Turning to Ben, I say, “Where are we going?”

  “Back to my place.”

“What?” I ask, feeling suddenly really nervous. “Ben, I’m not sure I’m ready to…”

“Oh, no,” he says, shaking his head. “I have a sailboat docked at my beach house. I thought we could go for a nice dinner on the water.”

  “Wow. That sounds really nice.”

He takes my hand in his own. “It’s a beautiful night and I have a beautiful girl with me. I have a feeling tonight’s going to be amazing.”

We set sail just as the sun is starting to dip down in the sky. Lila sits sideways on the long, wide, cushioned bench with her leg propped up. She watches me as I stand at the wheel. I glance at her every few seconds, unable to keep my eyes on the horizon. It’s a perfect evening for sailing—just calm enough so that the water is smooth but with just enough wind to allow for a bit of speed. When we reach the spot I had in mind, I put the sail down and drop the anchor. From here, we have a spectacular view of the island if you turn to the right, and the sunset if you look left.

Opening the cooler, I get out a couple of beers. I pop the lids off them and hand one to Lila, keeping one for myself.

“You really were listening. You remembered I don’t like wine.” She says.

“I was and I did. I remember everything you told me last night. Every expression on your face…”

  She smiles shyly.

Seating myself next to her, I lean over and give her a long kiss. She responds just how I knew she would, parting her lips to invite more. I hold her cheek with one hand, running my thumb along her soft skin. “How’s your ankle?”

“Good. I can hardly feel it.” Her voice is thick with emotion and I’m pretty sure that emotion is lust.

“Lila, I have to tell you something and it might determine what happens tonight.”

  Her face falls.

  “I nee
d you to know that I’m not looking for some one-week affair with you. There’s something about you that is so different than any girl I’ve met before. I know we only met yesterday, but I already know in my bones that this is something more.” I search her face for understanding, hoping she won’t think I’m crazy.

“I know what you mean. I told Gina that last night was the date of a lifetime, and it was at Denny’s.”

I chuckle, then kiss her hard on the mouth. “So, you can feel it, too.”

  Lila nods and whispers, “Yes.”

I lean in, letting my mouth hover inches from hers. “I hope that’s the first of many yeses I’ll hear from you.”

“That depends. Are you just with me because you want to try out a full-sized girl?”

My head snaps back. “No. Who would do that?”

  “My last boyfriend.”

“What an asshole.” Rage fills my muscles as I think of her having a jerk boyfriend. “I’m with you because I’m drawn to you. You’re like a lighthouse on a stormy sea.”

“Wow. That was…good.” Her eyes flick down to my lips as she moves in closer.

Just before I kiss her, I say, “I meant every word. I promise.”

Our mouths move together, tongues searching. We stay like this, just kissing, until I’m hard as a rock and my veins are coursing with longing. I pull away long enough to take her beer from her and put both our drinks in the cup holders built into the boat. Turning back to her, I kiss her again, pulling her down so she’s laying flat on the bench. I lay on top of her, propping myself up on one elbow so as not to crush her. I use my other hand to explore her body over the top of her dress. My hand runs over her curvy hips and her big, perky breasts. I skim my fingertips along the low-cut collar, feeling the silky skin of her chest. Lila moans, running her hands over my chest and abs, then down to my pants, where she finds my waiting bulge.

I kiss her neck and up to her earlobe, stopping to make her a little crazy with my teeth on her earlobe. Making my way down her body, I drop to my knees at the end of the bench, then pull her toward me so her bottom is close to the edge. Running my hands up her bare legs, I let them disappear under her skirt and glide along her inner thighs.
